Long time no post! So sorry 💜 here’s what’s happened in the last few months!

Rosie started laying the prettiest light brown white speckled egg! She’s gotten so big and such a fluffy butt!

Our new larger Omlet Cube coop arrived and after many weeks, finally got it all put together. We also have all the parts to increase the size and height of our run, but due to my hand surgery I have to put that off.

Got some adorable egg stamps!

The 2 babies born during the heat wave are getting so big!! (But still so small, they’re serama)

Tiny got a bath today and is now hiding in a warm heating pad cave. He’s got a photo shoot soon so that my wonderful neighbor can paint a portrait of him!

Sadly, I regret to inform you all that Princess Laya has passed away. She overheated in the coop last weekend and it’s been very hard for me to write this post. Rocket and Rosie also overheated and were in bad shape, but they’re recovering well, albeit missing their sister. Laya was the most friendly, peckiest, and the most restless at night (scardy chicken). Laya, I’m sorry and I love you forever. I’ll miss you pecking at my pocket zipper when I squat down in the run. 😭😘😭😘😭💜💜💜

Rosie, Laya, and Rocket are 17 weeks old. Soon we will have to be on the lookout for first eggs!! I can’t believe how big they have gotten. They make big girl sounds now and they are so cute!!

Tiny is 21 weeks old. Crows constantly! 😬 I have also seen him attempt to mate with the other chickens. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oreo has adapted to motherhood great. She is teaching the chicks what to eat, drink, and how to be a chicken.

Daisy has forgotten all about motherhood and broodiness and she is now back to being head chicken, doing chicken things.

Baby/lil guy (the black fluffy smaller chicken) is a rooster and we originally were not going to keep him but…he’s kinda grown on us and we are attached! He’s a bantam Cochin and about 12 weeks old.

2 baby chicks are doing great! They are 3 days old today!

Yesterday was the hottest day in Portland history. It got to 114 at our place! All chickens came inside and temporarily lived in cages in our shower to be cooler.

When chickens get hot, they do not sweat. They open their mouths and pant to cool down. We gave the girls plenty of cool treats, watermelon, blueberries, cold water. When it hit 110 I put my foot down and said ok, they’re coming in. I am in several local chicken groups and people were losing birds left and right.

What did the girls think?

“1 star, do not recommend”
“No bugs. No dirt. No rocks. I wouldn’t come back”
“Lack of live snacks. Leaving a bad Yelp review.”

On Monday, our 2 broody mamas Oreo and Daisy hatched these 2 adorable babies! I had to assist the dark one out of the shell. A third baby did not make it 😞

Unfortunately, Daisy decided that she wanted nothing to do with motherhood, but Oreo is happily sitting on these babies keeping them warm.

Needing name suggestions!

It is dumping out there ☔️ but the girls (and boy) are nice and dry under tarps! Our h**p bedding also absorbs super well so they have dry clean feet!

And yes, we have a chicken cam! 🎥

Here’s an example of the tiny and cute eggs that Daisy and Oreo lay! Daisy lays the slightly bigger egg and Oreo lays the smaller one. Battery for size.

Free ranging!

Every afternoon I like to let the flock free range and explore. Supervised for now, maybe when the 3 musketeers (Rosie, Rocket, Laya) are full size, will consider leaving them to free range all day.

They like to nibble grass and weeds, dig holes, and dust bathe!
