Vanner Mules

Vanner Mules Gypsy Vanners crossed with Donkeys don't seem to exist, so we decided to create a couple!

29/12/2023

After consulting with the CSU repro center, the best way to handle it is as a breeding lease on our mares. If you want to create your own Vanner mule (or even if you just want to create your own full Gypsy Vanner foal), we are willing to allow use of our mares. So you would pay us for the use of the mare and you would cover all the expenses (stud fees, shipping, board at repro center, AI, preg checks, surrogate mare if you choose embryo transfer, foaling at the repro center). If you are interested in pursuing this, the mare lease would be 3K due in payments at AI, foaling and weaning/pick up. We would cover all transport to/from repro center, mare board at our farm, shots & worming for mare and eventual foal, foal handling until weaning. We use Colorado State University's Equine Reproduction Lab - their fee schedules are all on their website.

So, there have been some inquiries about future Gypsy Vanner mules. We would be willing to repeat the cross if the foals are pre-sold. A flat fee would get you a mule foal at weaning (with handling, etc. as we did with the first 2). Pre-payment of 50% to cover the stud fee and AI and mare care until foaling, then the remainder due at weaning/pick up. If you are interested in a 2025 mule foal, PM for price. We also have 2 other mares we could use for embryo transfer if we have enough interest.

Slight rant: Cluasa is being "flipped". She was rather dismayed about the whole auction experience and didn't show well. She is just a baby and there's really no way to prepare them for that. She went for 1/4 of what Judah weanling mules sell for. Less than 72 hours and she's already being offered for sale. So if you see "Judith" on Facebook being "rehomed" , yes, that was our baby that spent a year on Dreamhorse hoping for a private sale to a loving home. The auction was our last resort after no offers were made.

Is it odd to use their greeting pictures for their goodbye pictures? These 2 will be on the block at the Troyer Auction today. Starts at 9am MDT. They are lots #120 (Cluasa) and 141 (Auribus). We're hoping their new owners love them as much as we have.

Pictures from Sunday. We really believe in imprinting for creating curious, trusting equine companions. As you can see, Auribus is really behind his sister in the de-spooking process. They are bound for the October 7, 2023 Troyer Auction if no one snaps them up before then!

They're so shiny! Spending their days out grazing really helps them get fit and keep those growing bones and muscles moving. According to the yearling cannon bone estimates, Cluasa should finish at close to 15 hands, Auribus about 14.2. After all the early enquiries, surprised they're still here! Dreamhorse ads have been edited and renewed. They'd look great in your yard!

Both these cuties are still interested in relocating. 1 or both would look great in your pasture!

We've had inquiries, and have decided to part with both the Gypsy Vanner mule foals. Some human medical bills have added up, so we think this is for the best. Since we have no idea what to ask for this rare cross, the fairest thing would seem to be an online auction. If anyone has experience and has a recommendation for a reputable online equine auction, please let us know. I know a good working home is out there for them!

Been too long since we posted something, so here's a few. The babies are well-socialized with people and pick on each other like any siblings. Yes, Cluasa really is sleeping with her feet on her brother's head. Also a couple shots of fun with Gypsy hair!

Took too many pictures for FB to handle, so I posted them to my Flickr account. Let the Mom's and babies out to graze yesterday.

Brought our two baby mules out together for the first time.

Cluasa is home! If you're looking at the shaved hock - she stayed a bit longer to have some puffiness thoroughly evaluated. Seems a condition called alloimmune thrombocytopenia is not uncommon in mule foals (possibly more common than we know, as the symptoms are subtle and can be passed off as normal newborn things). It is generally transient and has no lasting effects - gone completely by 4-5 weeks old (along with the rather "over" knees from being in-utero for 361 days!). We didn't want to take any chances, thus the full work-up. If it was something serious, you have 1 chance to get it right or they're possibly lame for life.

2 days old and about as adorable as we could wish! Her name is "Cluasa", which is Irish for "ears"

Presenting who we think is the world's first Gypsy Vanner mule! He was born around 2am this morning. This couple pics are from the vet at the CSU's Equine Repro center. Will be more (LOTS more!) once we get there to see him. Name as yet undetermined, but likely something meaning "firstborn"....

EDIT: Thank you to those who have found a few other Gypsy mules! Looks like the search algorithms have finally caught up! So we won't pursue "firstborn" as a name....

This is Lucyall braided up and read to go to CSU's Equine Repro Lab for foaling. In case you're wondering: her tail took 2 hours to unbraid, do minimal brushing, and rebraid (rather sloppily). Her mane was just over 2 hours for a thorough brushing and braiding. Neither pile of hair got washed (add another hour or so if you're bathing).

Gave Lucy a final brush out before she goes to the Repro center this week for foaling. It was a bit breezy! Been too cold for a bath, so pardon the dust. Tail braiding happened in the barn, mane braiding tomorrow!

5 month check-up today. Still on track, got their 1st rhino shots. Video of Vicki getting her ultrasound (in which we ask the All Important Question!). Pic of what equine umbilical cord looks like (4-leaf clover for luck?) and a bit of fetal vertebral column.

Meant to post this over the weekend. It's Lady Victoria's (aka Vicki) heartbeat ultrasound. We're on track for 2 long-eared (hopefully hairy) babies next year!

19/06/2021

So here's our first official newsflash: Lucy's heartbeat check shows she is happily in foal!

This is where you can follow along with the adventures of our 2 Gypsy Vanner mares and their mule foals due in 2022
