Quick gratitude shoutout (probably overdue). Behind many entrepreneurs you’ll find a team of supportive cheerleaders.

People who are understanding when you have to interrupt an important conversation to put out a business fire.

People who make you dinner after a long day.

People who forgive you for messing up your calendar & double booking something.

People who ask how they can help when emails, invoices, and work duties pile up.

People who listen when you need to explain why your mood is off, because you took work home with you (most of us in this field have strong emotional ties to our clients).

People who take your dog for that quick p*e break when you don’t have time.

People that hold you accountable to be more present & set better boundaries with your business so you can be a better version of yourself.

People who hug you a little longer than usual when they can tell it’s been a week.

Whoever these people are to you, thank them! We couldn’t do what we do without a support system, and I’m very thankful for my family, and friends, and these two dudes for helping me help you.

Thank you! ❤️✨

Guilt. A nasty little feeling that creeps up on you when you’d just… rather it not.

It’s a tough one to get “rid” of.

And a tough one to get to the bottom of.

I think getting curious about our guilt with our pups and what it might be stemming from is an important component of moving through it.

Our dogs can bring this feeling up more than people talk about…

I feel a huge amount of guilt about lots of things with my sweet Cedar bear.

I worry he is not happy, not enjoying life with me, not being off leash enough, not enough play, not enough time to connect, I can’t get rid of his pain, feel bad leaving him alone when I know he doesn’t want me to, feel guilty putting my social/resting needs before his own.

The funny thing is - those are common trends in my life, not just with Cedar. The gentle whisper of not doing or being “enough”. Feeling guilty putting myself first. Not trusting his joy/our love. Constantly trying to make up for things I feel guilty about (that I probably don’t need to). Not feeling deserving of his AMAZING little soul!

My invitation to you is to embrace the reflection your pup is offering. Sit with the guilt. Try not to project life themes onto your pup.

They probably are grateful for what you DO give them. They probably ARE happy just to spend the time they do get with you. They probably spend a good chunk of time trying to make YOU feel better. You probably ARE doing enough.

Make the best of the time you have to share, be intentional, be present, shake off the guilt (just like they shake off stress), you’re doing the best you can - and that is ENOUGH!

Let’s talk paddle boarding with dogs.

This can be a really fun experience to share with our canine companions, and be relationship building, hilarious, & even peaceful.

It can also be a total s*^t show & stressful for both of you!

I’m not a fan of forcing dogs to learn to love what we love. If they are scared of water, don’t enjoy the experience or are avoidant of the whole thing - respect that & go paddle boarding solo!

If you’re not sure and you wanna give it a try, here are some tips to guide you.

✅ start inside, with the paddle board on the ground, rewarding them for sniffing it, approaching it, or touching it (feel free to feed their meals on it too).
✅ ask them to “sup-up” (haha), luring them onto it, marking with a “yes” for all four feet on it, and toss the food off the board, repeat! Practicing “up-up” onto random, especially wobbly obstacles outside & inside can normalize this game.
✅at a quiet place outside, play the same game near a launching beach.
✅begin to add some movement to the board ( highlights), ask for sits or downs & stays on the board.
✅bring the board into the shallow water, the shore line or dock and play the above games.
✅ sit on the board while stabilizing it in the shallow water, invite them to “sup-up”, lure if needed with high value treats, reward heavily and continuously while they are on it. Let them get off whenever they want (with feet holding you in the shallow water so they do not feel it rock or move much).
✅ add movement to the board while feeding continuously while on it.
✅ add one paddle stroke (remain sitting, be patient), reward with treats for sitting or lying down, repeat, always in shallow water to start, and with life jacket on to keep them safe in case.
✅ keep it short, positive and fun, end the session before they are over it, stay close to shore the first many rides, do not stand or kneel before you both feel comfortable & calm adding that level of difficulty.
❌ don’t force them, don’t punish them if they have no interest in doing this whole thing with you, don’t rush the process, don’t forget treats!

Have fun! 🏄‍♀️

Want to know how to keep your dog safe in a heat wave?

✅ Limit exercise to before 10am, just short p*e breaks in between.
✅Leave them home from hiking, beach picnics (unless they are coming to swim) or long road trips. Even camping in the shade during high heat without an escape can be too much for thick furred dogs. Waiting for ferries or even on them with the wind blowing isn’t enough to cool them down on days like this.
✅Increase mental stimulation through puzzles, enrichment games (.dog has a couple videos on this), chewing frozen bones (as seen in the photo), training inside, licking frozen kongs, etc.
✅ Close all the blinds and even windows until night time - hot air can blow in and make matters worse.
✅Get creative on finding an air conditioner for sale (haha good luck).
✅Keep fans blowing.
✅Soak your pup with a wet towel or have them lay on a wet towel if you don’t have a cooling mat.
✅Give them a cool bath if they don’t mind it… you’ll have to brave those very wet shake offs & post bath zoomies all over your house (just this once!).
✅Avoid giving too much ice, it can make it more difficult for them to regulate their body temperature.
✅Ensure ample access to water but observe over drinking - this can be unsafe too!

Stay safe folks!

Babies and dogs. An underestimated challenge. Even the calmest of dogs can struggle to feel comfortable around a crawling, grabby, screechy baby!

Imagine it from their perspective. Babies can be loud, move unpredictably, grab at tails & hair, restless, erratic, disruptive to their space and access to resources (like you).

Until the “dropping food from the high chair” phase, young babies and toddlers can be a real scary, strange or even unwelcome new addition to your home for your pup.

Here are some suggestions to keep your dog feeling comfortable & young toddlers or babies safe during visits or while integrating into your home.

1. Give your dog a safe resting place where the baby cannot access them. Rest is even more important than ever when a baby is in the home because it’s likely your dog isn’t getting enough uninterrupted sleep, which can shorten their patience threshold & cause all kinds of wonky behaviours to flare up.

2. Reward calm behaviour. If your dog is a little unsure of the baby, have them on leash (or behind a baby gate/pen) & separated in shared spaces, and reward your dog for looking at the baby calmly. Calmly looking at baby across room = food. Repeat until your dog is a bit more settled around the baby. Getting used to sounds & movements from a safe distance can make this process easier for your dog.

3. If they are quiet but panting, restless, or all up in the baby’s business, give your pup a job! Cue “go to your bed - down - stay” and reward your dog regularly for calmly remaining on the bed. Do not allow the baby to access the bed - your dog’s resting place is a no go zone for baby!

4. Provide increased chewing and licking opportunities away from the baby such as frozen kongs, bully sticks, licky mats, enrichment puzzles, etc. When stress increases for our pups, their need to chew and lick at things does too! This can be a great outlet for residual “there’s a strange tiny human thing in the house” stress!

5. Remove your pup for a walk or a nap if they are overstimulated and these tips do not work. You might need a little extra help from a trainer!

I hope this helps!

At the beginning of the pandemic I wanted to give online dog training a try. People needed help more than ever & I wasn’t going to let lockdowns stop me!

I started .dog, launched online courses, created free YouTube videos & learnt how to entertain, coach & truly connect with clients all over the world through a screen.

Turns out I’ve got a knack for performing (must have been all of that theatre I did as a kid).

Canine Connection Training] LIVE Zoom courses have shifted over the last two years and instead of continuing on with Zoom Puppy Socials & Basic Manners, I have decided to focus on two areas that people are truly in need with their post-pandemic pups.

✨ Stranger Danger: for pups that struggle to cope with guests INSIDE their home as well as overly vocal dogs that bark at sounds/triggers passing by (or as soon as you start your online meetings). I get it - you’re STRESSED & it’s frustrating!

✨ Reactive Rover: for pups that exhibit on leash aggression, or frustration in the form of barking, lunging or growling towards fast moving triggers, dogs, people, etc. This can be embarrassing, feel impossible to “fix” and an isolating experience.

It’s been an honour to be the “weekly evening entertainment” on screens for hundreds of people - sharing dinner, wine, or taking notes ferociously. I promise to keep the helpful content coming, and I promise you’ll have a giggle!

Join me Sept. 12 for our next round of classes!

I took 10 days off work to jump in lakes, play games & share stories with loved ones.

Time off usually allows me a fresh look on things. So here are my lakeside thoughts…

Just like us, dog’s experience a lifetime of learning & growth & change. We aren’t a before and after. And neither are they.

We can’t be attached to when our dog will be perfect. And, in my humble opinion, our goal shouldn’t be to have the “ perfectly” behaved dog.

We shouldn’t be putting that sort of pressure on them, or us.

Dog behaviour is ever changing. The most challenging and turbulent time period is all the way until they are about 2 years old. Yup - 2! Buckle up.

Their behaviour will ebb & flow. Your training journey won’t be linear.

Try not to panic when it’s a bad day or get too attached to the behaviour you like on good days.

It’s a journey! Embrace it. Take the good days when you get them and roll with the bad days as they come. You aren’t perfect, and neither are they…

I firmly believe that the compassion & grace we show our dogs is a reflection of the compassion & grace we show ourselves.

I wish you a quiet morning in reflection with your dog(s).

I am off to Ontario to see family for 10 days. Leaving Cedar with .canineconnection (lucky boy). Quick tips if you’re leaving your dog to go on a summer holiday.
✨ Pack their fav toy so they have something familiar from home
✨ Send them with their dog bed, it smells like home & can help them settle in new places
✨ Increase their chewing options to help de-stress right before, after and during your trip
✨ Avoid FaceTime, hearing your but not being able to find you can be distressing
✨ Have fun!

See you all soon!

13/06/2022

Let’s talk: sitting at every corner or crosswalk…

✨Why people do it?
- they think they are “supposed” to
- they think it will somehow teach their dog to stop and sit at a cross walk if they ever run away or get off leash to prevent road danger
- they think their dog has to ask for permission before crossing
- they like to be in control
- they like to connect with their dog

✨ Why I want you to try something different:
- Sitting is a very well rehearsed and mastered behaviour for most dogs, so practising it so often isn’t always necessary
- If your dog does get off leash or run away, the chance of them remembering to sit at a corner (without you present) because you usually ask them to versus getting distracted by natural novel stimulus is very unlikely
- It can actually poison the cue/behaviour because you make them do it SO often that it becomes annoying & mundane versus a position they might enjoy responding to in situations you need them to (like waiting to go out a doorway)
- It’s NO FUN to sit on every corner and can make connecting with you BORING

✨ Alternative options:
- Try asking for a variety of skills on the walk at corners to keep up with diverse cues & to keep your dog engaged & having fun
- Try asking for nothing and letting them sniff and explore a bit more instead of enforcing control & rules (unless they are teens and you feel they really need consistency to remain connected with you outside)
- Change up what you ask for and when so they generalize all of their skills
- try to reward or teach: eye contact, positioning (to your left or right), down, touch, p*ekaboo, spin, twist, up-up, name game, walking on a slack leash, leaving something you ask them to, finding a tossed or plotted treat/toy, plank walking across things, back up, sit pretty, etc.

Have fun out there! ❤️

25/05/2022

I’m not gonna lie. Sometimes I feel super disconnected from Cedar. And guilty. Like… I can’t seem to make him happy & we aren’t having fun together. I have a lot of clients that reach out because they simply want to have better relationships with their pets. I totally relate. Sometimes there just feels like a disconnect, and I long for our friendship to be loved filled, and FUN!

My favourite thing to do with him is hike. But we’re very limited in this due to his ongoing health issues.

If you have a socially uncomfortable or reactive dog, I’m sure you can relate.

Some of us get dogs to join us on our favourite hobbies and sometimes the dog we get can’t actually enjoy those hobbies as we had hoped. I write about this often but this morning I had a moment of reflection with Cedar.

He doesn’t seem happy. I joke that he’s mad at me because I left him. But the truth is we aren’t having that much fun these days. Together at least. So instead of going on with my busy day and feeling guilty about our lack of connection I decided to do an early morning training session.

We might not be able to go on the mountain climb or adventurous camping trip that I had hoped for in the back country but we can connect over little baby moments of trying to communicate through training. Whether it’s tricks, Physio exercises, basic life skills or self control training games that you’re working on. These little moments of connection go along way in bridging the gap of connection that you might be experiencing.

We are going to aim for 3x 5minute training sessions a day, bring some fun to it, focusing on tricks.

He doesn’t love to train but he loves food. By keeping it short, playful, and letting go of expectations - I hope we can connect more deeply and continue to boost our friendship, when it sort of seems like he thinks I’m the one causing his chronic pain. 💔

Take the pressure off. Start simple, and commit to 15 minutes of training games a day - tag me in the journey!

As much as I’d love to take Cedar with me everywhere I go - I know that down time is really important for his nervous system!

Dogs need uninterrupted rest. Most of the dogs I’m working with these days are straight up OVER TIRED!

Unless your dog has isolation anxiety or separation anxiety - remember to leave them home alone or separated from you for 2-4 hours a day if you can.

Providing them a comfortable, safe, familiar resting place is key to preventing: over stimulation leading to nipping, barking, restlessness, leash biting, low-stress threshold outside of the home, snappy behaviour when moving them while resting, and much more!

📸:

Try getting into a routine with this resting time. Try after long walks, with something to lick at like a frozen kong to calm themselves. Try playing calming music. And always keep it the length of time you know they are comfortable with.

Don’t wanna do it? Who’s got the separation anxiety 😉🤪🤦🏼‍♀️!

Happy nap time friends!

When we started Sniffdog at the beginning of the Covid pandemic, we wanted to ensure pet parents all over North America could & would have access to science based dog training support as they prepared to bring home their new family members.

Since then, we’ve produced nearly 50 educational & FREE YouTube videos, 5 purchasable in-depth online dog training courses, tips sheets, PDF’s, exercises, done bi-weekly Instagram lives to offer free LIVE support & even offer multiple FREE online courses for people that want a taste before committing to a purchase.

With more and more people needing support & feeling ill prepared to take on some of their dog problems, we decided to lower the prices of the courses to make them even MORE accessible to a larger audience.

So, if you’re new here - WELCOME! If you’ve been here since the beginning, THANK-YOU, and if you’ve been sitting on a course and wondering if it’s for you- they are so damn cheap right now, I’m pretty certain you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much you can learn, for so little money, all in the name of developing a wonderful relationship with your dog.

Happy learning! See link in bio for access to courses! ❤️✨🙏📸

Raising two dogs that aren’t getting along all the time? Here are some tips to set you up for success.

✨ Separate for feeding, even if they don’t have conflict with feeding time. Residual conflict can fester, there’s no need.

✨ Provide individual training time, even 5 min a day. Their training goals likely differ, they behave differently together, and training both at once can be overwhelming.

✨Independence and self confidence is important for puppies so they are not dependant on their dog sibling to feel safe & secure. This comes from some solo time in the home, solo activities with you, and solo training.

✨ Baby gates providing separation for feeding, bone chewing, nap time, down time, and swapping out common space time can help keep the home calm & balance out who gets 1:1 attention.

✨ Aim for a couple of walks a week with one dog solo, not everyday (I’m not crazy, I know you don’t have unlimited time), juuuuust here or there if you can.

✨ Take them on fun adventures together and let them rest solo after!

✨ Work on calm greetings when you arrive home - high excitement moment can lead to conflict.

✨Have them separated when they are not supervised for safety (not always necessary).

✨Reward calmly sharing space together such as lying down in the same room.

✨ Have two beds for them - they shouldn’t have to share. Everyone having a safe comfortable calming place is going to help reduce stress.

✨Avoid sharing resources like toys, food items, food oriented toys, or getting them excited in small spaces - the smaller the space, the more likely they are to have conflict.

Happy multi-dog livin’ folks! ❤️👌🏼

“When can I get rid of using treats in training?”

Why does there have to be an end to it?

Help me understand.

✅ Straight up - using food works to reward behaviour you like so that it is offered more often, is carrying treats that big of a pain in the ass?

✅ It makes them happy, is that not reason enough to keep rewarding them for doing things you like?

✅ I promise you’re still “in control” of them if you’ve done enough efficient training when the treats aren’t present, but why not keep reinforcing them when they offer good behaviour with something they like?

✅ I love my job but would you do things you don’t naturally want to do (like work) for FREE? Food is like money to dogs, it builds incentive!

Personally, I choose to reward for life.

Because frankly, I’ve got nothing to prove, it makes him happy, and ultimately that makes me happy.

Sometimes a “reward” can be in the form of tossing a stick, letting Cedar off leash, changing my walking pace to running, letting him chase a squirrel, playing tug, etc. but generally, this boy likes his food (just like me 😉) & what gets rewarded —- gets repeated! So reward we do!

I’m all about rewarding him for offering behaviours I like, and those rewards don’t have an expiry date!

I challenge you to drop the “when can I stop using treats” agenda and instead consider, “how can I make walks more fun?”.

Life can be tough some days. We could all use a little more fun. I really think we need to drop the ego’s in dog training, stop aiming to gain so much control OVER them to prove something about ourselves. Have FUN with them. Your relationship will prosper!

24/04/2022

In the dog training industry most trainers eat, sleep & breath dogs. Involved in dog sports, clubs, meet ups, or literally never stop working because they come home to a collection of dogs they enjoy training after hours.

I have always felt like an outcast in the industry because when I’m not working with or learning about dogs, I really enjoy NOT talking about dogs. To keep my canine passions alive & well, I have to mix in some not so dog-related hobbies and adventures. Insert globe trotting and discussing philosophy & world events.

It still makes me feel like I don’t belong or am not good enough, because I really do need a break from dog talk sometimes.

In retrospect, that might be why I love huskies so much. Don’t get me wrong, some of them LOVE to train. But the 5 I’ve owned in my adult life looked at it like a chore, even when I keep it short and tried to make it fun. I remember when I did my second professional dog training certification, doing the testing with a husky was considered a brave task haha. My boy Askim pulled through but I felt like I REALLY had to work hard to convince him that training was actually enjoyable. I wanted to scream at him “look at the border collie over there! Or that heeler! And that lab! They all love it! Work with me here buddy! This is a test!”.

Cedar does not love training. If you’ve joined my zoom classes, you can vouch for that haha. He looks at me like “lady, you know I know this, why are we rehearsing it?!”. That is of course if he even stands up to participate on camera with my entire class watching haha.

Because he doesn’t like to train much - we don’t. I don’t force it. We train only the things that bring him joy - which mostly is Recall so that he can maintain off leash freedom.

Our training is for our lifestyle. And that’s it! And that’s enough for me. I like to help my people achieve the same. Freedom and adventure based training goals. They are my fav. Because when they are having fun adventuring - you are having fun adventuring.

New on-boarding process coming soon to the website… bring on adventure pups! & cheers to all the dog trainers who feel like they don’t fit in! ❤️
