Failure is a fundamental of learning.

A lot of people will try and avoid it, but failure is not bad or good. It is merely a lesson. Yes, it causes stress and doesn't feel amazing. However, that doesn't mean it isn't important to any learning process.

The important aspect is learning how to be resilient enough to guide yourself and your dog through the mistake and reach the goal you are trying to achieve.

So how do we overcome our mistakes?

1. Embrace them. As we said, failure is a lesson. Listen to what it's teaching you, don't try and hide from it.

2. Analyse your mistakes. Understanding what caused your dog to react, show aggression, or simply not follow instruction is the way through any setback. If you can find the cause you can address the problem.

3. Believe to achieve. Keep a strong positive mindset. Just because you made a mistake once does not mean you're doomed to fail again. Gather your thoughts and composure, and focus on what you are trying to achieve.

We have helped so many struggling with adversities with their dogs. We know we can help you too!

YOU’RE MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE

One of the most common mistakes owners make when trying to get their dog to walk on lead, is starting outside. There is way more stimulation when it comes to what the dog can see, smell, hear and touch. And for most dogs, it’s far too much when you first start teaching your dog to walk on lead.
So where do you start instead? You can start in the house, in the garden, or anywhere else you can think of that isn’t as fun as being outside. Now they have little else to focus on apart from you, start teaching them when you turn left, they do. When you turn right they follow that direction also. Even when you stop, they do too. Once you have accomplished this, you have an infinitely better chance at having the dog walk in tandem, rather than drag you across the street!

Let us know if you struggle with lead pulling, we’d love to help!

What a great session we had today!

But, what about those times the training just doesn't go to plan? Maybe I don't turn up or Morgan ends up away with the fairies. It's frustrating. Sometimes, it's better to muscle your way through the pain and get the session done. But, there's always those training sessions that just seem completely damned and what can you do?
It could be better to just stop the bus and get off. Instead, spending the time enjoying some games like tug or fetch. Even letting them turn off the switch and take in what's around them. This is called decompression.
There's nothing wrong with stopping a session early and doing the things you and your dog enjoy, and allow them to relax. It's incredibly important if your dog seems burnt out. And, it's perfectly normal to have these moments in your training, especially if you've been seeing consistent success in your training.

The best thing is to set out a plan to include decompression within your training plan. And if you're struggling to set or stay accountable to one, that's where we can help!

Drop us a message or visit the link below to find out how we can change you and your dog's worst nightmare in as little as 3 months!

IT'S ME NOT THE DOG

Many people I see use the phrase “I know I’m the problem, it’s not the dog” when facing an issue and there’s a reason behind this. The relationship you have with your dog is one of, if not the most important part of having a happy, confident, and relaxed companion. It’s the foundation that holds the rest of the house together and without it, I often see them at a point where they start to crumble. Not everything is about teaching the dog, a lot of it is about providing you with the skills and knowledge to succeed.

Now, you can do this through different means. Simple relationship games, toys and play, even consistent training will help form the relationship you desire. Where most go wrong is they make their relationship too much of a currency game of where’s the treat or toy. As any parent will tell you, fun and games are a big part of the upbringing of any child, but so is structure and discipline as long as it stems from a place of loving and compassionate care. The balance of this all will help you succeed where you may be currently failing. The only question is, do you have the skills and knowledge to communicate this to your dog?

Don’t worry if you answer no! That’s where we can help! Our personal, dedicated coaching can help you when you’re at your wits end!

Socialisation as a term gets thrown around A LOT in dog training. It's one of the first things you do and continue to, with your dog. But, what actually is it and am I doing it correctly?

Firstly lets look at the definition. "The process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society." In dog training terms this can translate into making sure your dog is equipped to deal with the life we set for them.

Now how do we put this into practice? Is it through meeting other dogs and people? Taking in the surroundings you and your dog are in? Or is it focusing on learning how to perform a variety of actions in many different settings? For me, it's all the above. Socialisation is a scale that you control and balance. That's not to say your dog is going to be the perfect citizen just because you've hit that balance. A Golden Retriever is likely to happily sit on the "meeting" side of the scale. A German Shepherd might be better at focusing on performing actions. The key is to know the dog you have and make it realistic.

Do you ever feel what you say goes in one ear and out the other?

There could be a bunch of reasons why your dog is ignoring you. Have you communicated clearly what you want? Does your dog understand What you're asking? Are your expectations too high?

Be mindful of what you're asking and where. If you haven't explained to a five year old that you have to unpack before going on the rides at Disneyland, there's a high chance you would have a big strop and some tears. Or if you told the same kid they can go to the sweet store and immediately leaving as soon as you walk through the door.

If you've explained, communicated clearly and have realistic expectations, then there could be one thing you're missing. ACCOUNTABILITY! There will always be a lesson to learn in failure, it's often a fundamental part of every learning process. It teaches resilience which might be the key to the door that unlocks your dog's potential.

How Far Will You Go?

Lets answer a common question every dog trainer gets, and every dog owner will ask. How long will this take? The answer.... Well not really an answer but another question. How far do you want to go? For some people having a dog not pull them over on walks or come back when called. For others, having a dog that sticks to your leg like glue when you say "heel" is the target you wish to reach.

The key word in all of this is target. It doesn't matter what your end goal is, just that you know what you want to achieve and how to get there.
