🐈⬛ Toothless Update 🐈⬛
Firstly, Toothless is doing great! His observation bloodwork for his FIP has come up clear and he is his regular self 🖤 Begging us for food, pestering his siblings, cuddling with his people -- we absolutely love to see it!!!
We took Toothless to the cardiologist at the OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital because of the heart murmur that was discovered when he was first diagnosed with FIP back in Sept of 2022. Our amazing vet @willamette_veterinary_hospital suggested we wait until after the FIP treatment to deal with the murmur.
The Good News: Toothless' heart murmur is completely benign and is not causing any problems. It is mild and actually goes away when Toothless is relaxed!
The Not-So-Good News: Toothless has heart disease. It is in a very early stage and is causing no symptoms at this time. We caught it early because we brought him in for the murmur. We aren't sure if it is caused by the FIP or genetic predisposition, but the protocol doesn't really change either way. At this stage, there is nothing we can do to reverse, slow down, or stop the heart disease. In cats, the vet will monitor them closely and begin providing supportive care once the cat begins showing symptoms.
For Toothless, this means we will be revisiting the cardiologist once every six months for a follow-up to monitor progression of the heart disease, as well as close observation at home. We are hoping 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 the heart disease progresses verrrryyy slowly so Toothless can continue to have a long, healthy life 🖤. We will know more in six months when we do the next recheck and see how far it has progressed.
I don't say this is "bad" news, because with the roller coaster we have been on in the last six months, the news could have been a lot different. While I sincerely wish he did not have heart disease, it's very possible it will take years to progress and he will enjoy a normal, healthy life.

A mini update on Toothless: We've had some ups and downs over the last couple weeks. Overall, we are still seeing remarkable improvements from his first FIP diagnosis. He has reabsorbed all the fluid in his abdomen and has no more free fluid in his abdomen (🥳). His energy levels are continuing to go up and he has started initiating play with Flynn and with Rajah! He is perkier and actually woke us up this morning playing with his new toy. We have so far managed to get through 27 days of injections without any injection site sores (🤞🏼). He goes to the vet for a checkup and blood work on Saturday. Hopefully that will come back clear enough that we can switch to oral tablet medications around day 39 to take us through the end of his treatment (minimum 84 days total). Toothless did give us some stressful days and sleepless nights last week. He and Rajah both got what the doctors believe is an upper respiratory infection, where they both started sneezing and Toothless spiked a fever again. The infection overwhelmed his poor immune system and he was so lethargic, refused to eat, and was feeling so bad we rushed him into the ER vet. He's still a bit sneezy, but we feel we've gotten him past that for the most part. We've more than doubled his dose of the injectable medication, and if we're able to switch to the oral version the price will go up even higher. We're determined to get Toothless his treatment and get him into remission, and we'll do it no matter what -- but any support is very welcome and appreciated.
