🐾 Reward-Based Training Works for All Breeds! 🐾

Did you know that positive reinforcement training is effective for every breed of dog? Whether you have a tiny Chihuahua or a mighty Great Dane, using rewards like treats, praise, and play is the key to success.

There is **no need** to rely on outdated methods involving pain, fear, or frustration. These compulsion techniques not only harm our dogs but also weaken the trust and bond we share with them.

Let's embrace compassionate training! By focusing on rewarding good behavior, we build happy, confident, and well-behaved pups. Remember, every dog deserves to learn in a loving and supportive environment. 🐶❤️

Thank you to all the military dogs, past and present. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🐾🇺🇸

On this Memorial Day, we honor all the working military dogs serving now and those served before. Our freedom depends on the sacrifices from our men, women, and canine in uniform. Salute!

“When a flower doesn’t bloom in the place it’s planted, the blame is on the environment, not the flower” ~ Alexander den Heiler

“The main reason for failure in dog training is people expects too much of the dog and not enough of themselves.” ~ Bob Bailey

“When you change the way your look at the things, the things you look at change.” ~ Wayne Dyer

As my mentor and friend the iconic Bob Bailey says “The main reason for failure in dog training is people expect too much of the dog and not enough of them selves.” Maybe the training you’ve put into your dog up to this point hasn’t worked, maybe the input you’ve received from experts so far hasn’t worked, that doesn’t mean there is no solution...it could mean you’ve been looking in the wrong places or trying the wrong approaches. To make it a perfect trifecta, three amazing quotes in one post, I’ll add one more from the late great Wayne Dyer “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.“ Dogs really are amazing when we give them the chance to be!

Muzzle conditioning relies on patience and positive reinforcement. Start by introducing the muzzle gradually, associating it with treats. Progress to touch training, rewarding calm behavior. Gradually increase wearing time, securing straps gently. Consistent practice reinforces positive associations, ensuring your dog’s comfort with the muzzle.

Local (NYC) update on the Mystery Canine Respiratory Disease as of Nov 26. Watch your pup and if you have plans to board over holidays, have a discussion with your caregiver on procedures in place should it hits close to home.

If you’ve been reading or watching the news lately, you may be aware of the buzz around the “mystery” respiratory disease that has been affecting dogs across the country. In some instances, the illness has proven fatal. Like many of these stories, there is a lot of hype but there does not appear to be much substance. At this point, we know cases have been reported in several states (Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, and New Hampshire) going back to early 2022 with no reported cases in New York that we know of so far. The current outbreak in Oregon seems to be the biggest, or at least the one getting the most coverage. The causative organism is not yet known, with initial cases suggesting some sort of virus, but recently a lab in New Hampshire has suggested a new bacterial organism could be the culprit, but the data is very preliminary. It’s quite possible that there could be an initial viral component with a secondary bacterial infection. Most of the reports are about dogs that did not respond to treatment initially or at all and go on to develop pneumonia, however it’s likely there are dogs out there that were treated, recovered completely, but that were just not reported. Some veterinarians have seen these dogs respond well to the antibiotic doxycycline, an antibiotic that is often used to treat several respiratory bacterial infections in dogs. So at this point, in our area, it is likely not necessary that we put all of our dogs in lockdown a la COVID, but that we do follow the usual precautions: make sure your dog is vaccinated for bordetella (kennel cough), parainfluenza and influenza if they go to groomers or daycare/boarding/dog runs, etc.. If your dog starts to sneeze, cough, have runny eyes or nose, or suddenly becomes extremely tired, keep them at home away from other dogs and let us know. And keep track of news reports, because if it starts to show up in our area it’s likely there will be plenty of coverage, and we’ll put out the word as well.

Thanksgiving is a holiday of smells, sounds, people, and excitement for our dogs. Watch out for their emotional reactions too and keep them calm and happy.

What is a fun and enjoyable gathering for us humans can be perceived very differently for dogs!

Most dogs do not have the inherent ability to relax when there are a lot of visitors.
This is a skill that is taught - and starting today to teach it is *too late*.

If your dog is not used to being around a lot of people that's okay - but you need to keep them away from the commotion and *prevent* them from getting into trouble.

Having a safe space (crate, dog bed, “place” mat) exclusively for your dog makes all the difference.

Sharing Victoria Stilwell’s post and stand against abusive methods to force control/compliance on dogs. Dogs are sentient with logical processing and emotional responses. It is the responsibility of every dog trainer to coach and educate the public on how to communicate effectively with our canine companions. Choose your trainer wisely; your pups deserve utmost consideration to be successful in the environments we put them in.

There is no place for abuse in dog training. There are horrific videos going around the internet of one particular trainer who’s techniques are disgraceful and abusive. It doesn’t matter whether you are working with a Pug, a Bulldog or a Leonberger like this beauty here - there is zero justification for cruelty, regardless of the issue. This male trainer has a large following of people who are swayed into thinking that stringing dogs up by their leashes and collars until they defecate on themselves is ok because ultimately it ‘saves dogs’ lives’ and stops them from being euthanized. This is a myth. Please do not be conned into thinking this is ok for any dog, and if you care about your dog or dogs’ welfare in general, avoid watching, sharing or supporting this man and make your voice heard.
As an ambassador for the RSPCA, I take cruelty to animals in general and in dog training very seriously. I have fought against it for over 20 years and will continue to do so. Everything we do at VSPDT, VSA and Positively shows you effective alternatives to harsh methods, and exposes the truth behind the myths of antiquated and dangerous theories, beliefs and methods.

Met Libby Riddles, Alaska Huskies Musher; first woman to win the Iditarod Race, 1985; book writer and public speaker, at Alaska Cruise 🚢. Her presentation on her Sled Dogs and Adventures was amazing. Relationship is the foundation of the breeding, training, living, and loving the dogs she mushes with. Total inspiration!!

Well put! We have a responsibility to make our dogs happy. A fulfilled dog is the best canine companion friend!

We hear the same story. Family adopted a certain breed of dog and expected that dog to be like (their childhood dog — their friend’s dog — the neighbor’s dog). Instead, they have a dog who destroys, nips, soils indoors, jumps, runs away…..

People aren’t all the same and neither are dogs. ☺️

We often base our decision on how the dog makes us feel when we hold them. 😍. We need to consider what needs WE must fill to make the dog happy.

If you are considering a dog, research the breed.

1. Can you provide the care that dog needs

2. Will you provide the activity the dog desires?

3. Are you willing to seek training for the dog before problems arise.

4. Can you afford the cost associated with a dog.

5. Are you considering a life change, such as moving, changing marital status, having kids, changing a job. Dogs live up to 16 years. If they cannot enjoy the ride of life with you, reconsider getting on.

If you already welcomed a dog that is not living up to your expectations, please hire a professional dog trainer. YouTube videos can only get you so far.

PSA -
With modern living having more and more deliveries to our homes, the responsibility of managing a safe environment for our dog(s) and hardworking delivery persons falls on the owners.
#1 Understand your dog's temperament and threat perception so you can preempt reactivity.
#2 Make arrangements to antecedent events to eliminate preventable threatening stimuli accordingly.
#3 Train for alternative behaviors through deferential reinforcement training.

Sharing the same outrage as expressed in this Victoria Stilwell’s post. We know so much more of dogs - the amazing species genetically programmed to want to live with humans. Compulsion training is not training as the learning of how to be successful in our world is not taught with objective of understanding. Heavy punishment truly is abuse.

Not always in time to whip out the camera. This morning hike was a pleasant exception. Caught sight of Raccoon at local hiking park.

When you teach with goals of establishing understanding, you don’t have to resort to aversive tools. Many trainers promote use of remote e-collar to STOP chase or enforce recall.

We prefer to train for understanding. No doubt it will require splitting goals into smaller achievable milestones. That’s what Positive Reinforcement training is - to teach the preferred CHOICE.

Enjoy your companion dog and learn together as life is full of joy. Happy training! 💕

Understanding our canine 🐕 companion requires us to observe, empathize, and rationalize 🧐🥸🤓.

Yes, anthropomorphism can go wrong when we human are quick to assume and disregard how dogs receive information from their environments.

But, anthropomorphism can absolutely be correct as well since sentient beings do function cognitively and emotionally in similar ways.

Don’t disregard our dogs’ 🐶 perception of their world.
