Horas and mejuah juah from a cool and cloudy Samosir Island. We hope your week has been a good one – here’s what’s been going on in Sumatra.

OUR NEWS

☔ After more than a month of hot, sunny days, we’ve finally had some much-needed rain here in Tuktuk - 3 days of drizzly rain and overnight downpours. We are still in the middle of dry season here in North Sumatra, but the weather is always unpredictable, so you never know what you’re going to get!

😊 New video is up! This one is a throwback to our local vlogs, where we hang out with you and show you around a little. This is a fun one – after 2 years we’re finally getting better at talking on camera 😂 The link is in the comments if you'd like to check it out.

😺 Our youngest cat Auki is getting sterilised - in the nick of time. The neighbourhood toms have been eyeing her up, so we’re really grateful to Toba Animal Friends Sumatra for bringing their trusted vet friends from Medan here to Tuktuk for a clinic. (We’re paying, but the clinic is free for street cats (and dogs) and those who can’t afford it – such a worthwhile program to support!)

SUMATRA NEWS

🙏🏽 The month of Ramadan starts this week for the Muslim population around the world. Ramadan is a holy month devoted to fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. From dawn to dusk, Muslims refrain from eating and drinking, breaking their fast with family and friends in the evenings. Ramadan Mubarak to all our Muslim friends!

😔Heavy downpours triggered flash floods in West Sumatra this week, tragically killing at least 10 people and leaving dozens more missing. 14 houses in the Koto XI Tarusan were buried and 20,000 more flooded up to the roof. Our hearts go out to all those affected.

🚒 In stark contrast, Riau’s dry season has really kicked in in the last few weeks, with 34 hotspots identified in the province. Community firefighters have been battling peatland fires for most of February. In 2023, almost 1 million hectares of Indonesian land was burned in wildfires (five times more than in 2022).

😴 Not strictly Sumatra news, but a tale worth telling. Two Indonesian pilots (flying for Batik Air) have been suspended after BOTH fell asleep for 30 minutes MID-FLIGHT!! Luckily, the only consequence was a wonky flight path. The pilots woke up, reset their navigation, and safely delivered their 153 passengers to Jakarta. The government is now reviewing night flight procedures.

Meet

She is more than 9 yo. She has TVT.
What is TVT?Canine transmissible venereal tumors (TVTs) are cauliflower-like, pedunculated, nodular, papillary, or multilobulated in appearance. They range in size from a small nodule (5 mm) to a large mass (>10 cm) that is firm, though friable. The surface is often ulcerated and inflamed and bleeds easily.

So vet said she need to have parasite treatment before chemotherapy. Nona has a month parasite therapy.

Until today she has her third chemotherapy. And before chemo usually must blood test again.

These dogs are the voice of many dogs out there that are still suffering from the cruelty of the dog meat trade. Finance our rescue project to give them the best chance of survival!

At the end of March we rescued 15 dogs from the back of a truck to be sold to dog meat restaurants in Samosir, Sumatra, Indonesia. Cramped into a tiny space, we could not look away and do nothing. We were able to negotiate with the driver and got all 15 dogs out of the horrible situation. Totally we take care of 43 dogs and 41 cats now.

Most of the dogs are in terrible condition, malnourished, and traumatized. Within two weeks, we managed to scrape the little money we had, along with the help of our community and loyal patrons, to find a land where we built temporary fencing and a roof for cover to shelter the dogs. The dogs are recovering and safe now, but we still need your help!

Currently, we need to ensure that the dogs can receive the proper treatment, medical attention, food, and care that they need to be able to strive until each and every one of them is ready to be adopted.

In order to do this, a number of things need to be funded. The funding will guarantee that the dogs will be taken care of. It will also give us a chance to breathe and focus more of our energy into educating the community and talking to find a long-term solution with the local government about the dog meat trade issue that this island has been having.

The nearest vet clinic is 6 hours away from the remote area where the dogs are currently located. The car will enable us to transport the dogs needing medical attention to the vet as we have found it difficult to find any vehicle owners that would allow us to bring dogs.

As important as the food and water, we also need to ensure that these dogs are sterilized to avoid any unwanted puppies that will perpetuate the dog population problem around Indonesia.

These dogs are the voice of many dogs out there that are still suffering from the cruelty of the dog meat trade. Together we can make a difference in their lives and many others!

The five universally accepted freedoms that all animals are entitled to:
1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
2. Freedom from Discomfort
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress

What does that look like? In most cases, when we care for our pets properly, we can provide those five basic freedoms to domestic animals like cats and dogs.

But there's no way we can provide all five to animals that belong in the wild, like monkeys and birds.

These animals must be chained or caged if kept by humans. There is no way for us to give them the opportunity to display their natural behaviours. And when they can't perform their natural behaviours, they become distressed and afraid.

If we try to keep wild animals as pets, we are depriving them of at LEAST numbers 4 and 5.

A caged bird cannot fly free and sing from the treetops. A chained monkey cannot live in their family group or explore the forest. An orangutan in a cage can't climb to the treetops and build a nest while munching on leaves and fruit.

Let the bird fly! Let the monkey jump on the trees! If you want to hear the song of a bird, plant trees near your home!

Leave wildlife wild, and appreciate the wonderful pets that we can look after well.

We have great news! After months of hard work behind the scenes, Toba Animal Friends is now formally registered as a charity foundation in Indonesia.

This means that we can get to work on applying for grants and financial support for our projects and take our animal welfare, rescue and education work to the next level.

Sweet Onyen needs help! We've been feeding this lovely ginger boy on the street for a few years now, but this week he became very sick, so we took him to the vet.

He can hardly breathe and is really skinny; blood tests and x-rays revealed severe damage to his pancreas, and the vets suspect he has FIP.

Poor old Onyen has been put on a nebuliser to help him breathe better, and is receiving medicine and intensive care from the vet team.
All this care is necessary to help this gorgeous boy recover, but it has resulted in a bill of 2 million IDR (about $200 AUD or $130 USD/EURO).

We are gratefully accepting any and all donations to help pay this bill. It's been a tough month with essential structural repairs to our shelter thanks to a lot of rain, so even the smallest amount is appreciated.

If you have one or two dogs, you know they aren’t cheap to feed!

Well, here in our Medan shelter, we currently care for 22 adult dogs – so just imagine how much they eat!

Every day, we feed them healthy, balanced meals, with a mixture of rice, vegetables, chicken and sometimes, turmeric.

Every day, we go through around 3.5kgs of rice and 3kgs of chicken – and that’s just for a single meal.

Currently, we have lovely sponsors for 8 of our dogs.

We are seeking sponsors for the remaining 14.

To sponsor one dog costs 300,000 IDR (about $31AUD, or $20 USD/Euro).

Vaccinating all animals in our shelter is essential here in Sumatra to protect them from common - and often fatal - illnesses.
This week, we vaccinated several dogs and cats, some with their first shots, and some with their boosters.

All our animals were very brave, and we're happy to know they're going to stay safe and healthy, but vaccinations aren't cheap!

We're looking for donors/sponsors to help us cover the cost of vaccines. It costs us 180,000 IDR (about $18AUD or 11 Euro) to vaccinate a dog or cat. LFT is continuing to call for a ban on dog meat. We recently partnered with local activists from Toba Animal Friends Sumatra to post signs across North Sumatra and to provide stickers for cars to spread the message that dogs are not food.

Our recent investigation into the Sumatra dog meat trade showed horrifying cruelty, including dogs being rounded up from the streets, thrown into sacks, and having their mouths strapped shut before being violently killed.

Meet Suryanto and Kiki. We met Kiki during a sterilisation program. She was a stray who we rescued and brought to our shelter.
Suryanto was found on the street in 2020, malnourished and afraid.
Now, these two besties live in our shelter in Medan. They are always together, and love curling up in a warm blanket when it's raining (which is a lot recently!)

Temui Suryanto dan Kiki. Kami bertemu Kiki selama program sterilisasi. Dia adalah stray yang kami selamatkan dan bawa ke tempat perlindungan kami.
Suryanto ditemukan di jalan pada tahun 2020 dalam keadaan kurang gizi dan ketakutan.

Tahun 2022 telah menjadi tahun yang SANGAT sibuk bagi tim TAF Sumatera, namun kami kembali ke Facebook dan menantikan tahun yang akan datang!

Saat ini, kami sibuk merawat lusinan kucing dan anjing di shelter kami, tetapi kami juga pekerjaan keras di luar rescue tahun ini.

Kami tidak sabar untuk memberi tahu kalian tentang hal itu tahun depan, memperkenalkan Anda pada hewan rescue kami, dan memberi tahu Anda bagaimana Anda bisa membantu kami di 2023.

Tapi sebelumnya, kami ingin bercerita tentang klinik sterilisasi yang kami jalankan di Tuktuk, Danau Toba awal bulan ini.

2022 has been a VERY busy year for the TAF Sumatra team, but we’re back on Facebook and looking forward to the year ahead!

Right now, we’re busy looking after the dozens of cats and dogs in our shelter, but we’ve also been doing a lot of work outside of rescue this year.

We can’t wait to tell you all about it next year, introduce you to our beautiful rescues, and let you know how you can help us to help even more animals next year.

But first, we want to tell you about the sterilisation clinic we ran in Tuk Tuk, Lake Toba earlier this month.

We teamed up with the amazing Cita vet team, and worked with our animal loving friends at Exploring Sumatra to manage a free sterilisation clinic for cats and dogs in the village.

Over two days, we sterilised 48 cats and 5 dogs, using donations from animal lovers around the world.

We were so happy to see such a positive response from the local community here, with so many people supporting sterilisation for their pets.

Next year, we hope to do more work like this.
