Is it possible to make friends with an unknown dog?
Yes, it is possible, but it is essential to be patient! Respecting the dog is a priority in earning his trust. Often, a docile dog can be unfriendly if its space is invaded. That is one of the reasons why children and dogs should only interact with an adult present. Talk to the dog from afar, use a calm, friendly tone to greet him, keep a few feet away, and invite him to approach you. Avoid making sudden movements at this point and bend down to be at his height or walk towards you sideways, never facing it may interpret this as a threat. Let him interact with you, and when the dog comes close, without fear, hold out your hand for him to sniff. Keep talking to him in a low voice, don't forget that his hearing is much more powerful than ours. If so, offer him a treat and give him a gentle pet to seal the friendship. The safest region for first contact is his back, just above his tail. Notice if his tail is wagging; if it is, it's a great sign to seal the friendship!
