nd people to achieve the highest quality of a thriving life that includes good health, safety, healthy relationships, effective communication, contentment, and happiness. Students, employees, and clients are empowered through an eclectic approach which involves acquiring, applying, and reflection on skills, to develop mindsets focused on recognizing all opportunities for growth while building grit. The honest feedback provided by our horses directs people safely on the rewarding journey that encourages self-regulation and decision-making skills, founded in moral and ethical principles that help everyone to develop self-esteem and thrive. This obstacle is called a 'back-thru'. Our beginners (of all ages) start by walking forward through it.

The opening to walk in is plenty wide for a horse and rider, but some of us let our sub-conscious brains and survival instinct take over as we freeze and even panic approaching the opening.

The need to pay attention and focus on what our body language is telling the horse, as well as where we are looking, is implied on these types of exercises.

As these partners enter the chute, you can see our little rider using her eyes and body perfectly, as our wonderful teacher/mentor horse so beautifully does his job.

You can gauge this rider's confidence level after she exits the obstacle and she starts looking around in this big, unfenced field, filled with other horses.

The attentive trainer, always on standby, reminds the young rider to focus on the horse. Rider explained that she needed to make sure the videographer was doing his job.

Which opened the door for an excellent conversation about how important it is to choose what we are focusing on and how that choice always influences results. Rather than remove distractions, at Grace and Grit: Health and Healing Thru Horse-Human Partnerships we ADD them and practice learning how to deal with them. Seems to be more real life, dontcha think?

Opportunities abound. 😁🤠

It's not just about horses, is it?

(We know a lot of people mute the sound of 35 MPH winds in the background, but hearing it reminds us of how good it felt. Hopefully the rest of fall and winter will be like this 😂😆🤨

Horse by horse, each of our horses is choosing to stand still during tacking up and tacking down. Many of these photos were taken while the handler left the arena for a few minutes, only to find the untethered horse standing in exactly the same spot upon return of the handler.

It wasn't always this way. ALL of these horses, as well as some others who are exhibiting the same choice, went through periods of anxiety about being groomed, tacked, and untacked.

In fact, none of them stand perfectly still for every. single. person who is learning to interact with them even at this point.

The take-home-message, the common factor for success (or lack thereof) seems to be the focus, choices, and thoughts of the handler.

It really is "never the horses fault". That is SOOOO empowering for us horse-enthusiasts who are our horses' partners. Opens the door for limitless possibilities, infinite growth. The result really is our responsibility since we make all the decisions.

Lucky are the horses with mindful and present partners.

A tiny snippet of Dino (aka 'Prairie Panache') AQHA sorrel gelding out of our own CC (Shadows Rave Review).

Some fun facts about Dino: He was the first horse ever born on this property; he can open any door, gate, or barrier, and he can weave that 15.3 H body through a 4 strand fence without wrecking the fence, and he can open electric fence gates without getting shocked.

Rocket is one of our talented, great-minded AQHA mares (aka "Ima Smart Rocket").

Notice how unengaged she is as she starts off this free-longing exercise. The handler's attentive focus and mindful requests quickly elicit the perfect level of attentiveness and focus from this very well-bred (Wison Hollywood X Ima Smart Smoothie) mare who loves using her body.

Rocket LOVES people. She is arguably the Leading Farm Suckup, on a farm full of people loving suck-ups.

Another of Bullwinkle, 2018 ApHC dark bay gelding by Goers Awesome Dream (x Dreamfinder) out of ApHC 2003 Canadian National Champion and ApHC Champion Black mare, Chancey Nights (aka 'Raven).

This gelding is athletic and gorgeous, a big bodied 16.1+ hands. He cleans up even better than his beautiful mother.

He actually DOES have excellent manners. He did not pick up a mouthful of hay until I dropped the lead rope and walked away. He would NEVER think of eating while hanging out with a people and getting all that dopamine-producing attention.
