Synergy Rotation, in Dorset. Spent the week looking at young stock respiratory disease and scour. Therapeutics, discussing the best antibiotics for different clinical disease and a trip to the abattoir which was definitely an experience but one that I’m happy I did, as someone that eats meat I think it’s important to know exactly how your meat gets from farm to fork.

🪡 Two surgeons were joking so much they had each other in stitches!
First opportunity to close a wound in a dog. Quite different, to working with equine skin. There is a lot more tissue movement, fat and muscle to work with and a lot less tension. Closed in a simple interrupted pattern. This was super exciting for me and I was really quite happy with how it turned out, just need to work on speed and muscle memory.

Small animal surgery. We have been in small teams of 3 for this rotation which has been ideal as gives us all the opportunity to scrub into surgery. So far we has seen a tracheostomy, caudal left lung removal, pinna mass removal and cardio version.

✨Getting the Perfect Position.
Today were worked on small animals radiographs for diagnostics imaging.
🦴 3 main positions
- Right lateral
- Left lateral
- Dorsal ventral (starting position so you don’t disturb the lung fields for a balanced image)
🦴sternum and spine should run parallel to each other
🦴 know your borders for thorax and abdomen

🩺Internal Medicine Rotation.
Just about to finish up my first ever rotation, took some time to work out the set up but once you get into the swing of it, there are some really cool cases to work up. Here are some of the things I’ve found myself using every single day! ⬅️⬅️⬅️ and Don’t forget
▪️Laptop charger - Teams drains your battery like nothing else.
▪️Headphones
▪️Student card, you need it for just about every door on the QMH
▪️Face Mask
▪️Plenty of snacks, that you can eat cold, there is No Microwave!

What is a Chifney?
Another type of head collar for managing more difficult horses. It’s an in hand bit, going over the tongue and behind the chin. It’s used mainly in the racing industry to handle young thoroughbred that are full of the joys of spring but can become dangerous if not handled correctly. It can also act as an anti- rearing device as the dip in the metal sits on top the tongue. They should be used correctly and with care as can be very sharp on the horses mouth.

Thank you to HN and for the last two weeks of farm ems. Huge number of cases and discussion over the last few weeks, and it’s great to but learned knowledges into practice and see first had surgery. Highly recommend if your looking for more experience in farm animals. They deal with cattle, sheep, pigs and even the more unusual including lamas and camels. They also have a small and equine department if farm isn’t your thing, so there really is loads to see.

Meet Charlie...
who may or may not be named after the vet to cut him out.

This was the fist cecerian section I've been able to see while on farm placement and it wasnt half a tricky one. Charile's front feet where in the pelvic canal but he was upside down and his head was pulled back.

Normal calving position is spine to spine with front feet first followed by the head, On palapation you should be able to feel two front feet and the nose sitting on top. Due to the malpositioning the calf had to be cut out blind. He's a live strong bull calf that was trying to get to his feet while we were still stiching up his mamma. I'm happy to report that both him and his mum are doing great.

🐄 Tuberculosis
In England depending on which county your farm falls into TB testing has to be carried out either 6monthly,annually or 4 yearly. All cattle within the farm are required to be tested from 42 days old.

Testing is carried out by clipping 2 small patches on the neck, measuring the width of the skin and injecting an Avian strain and a Bovine strain. Each cow is identified by tag number and skin measurements recorded. This was the first job we carried out on Monday morning at 7am working through over 400 cattle!!!

72 hours later the test is read and if reactions are present the skin is measure and compared to day one.

The Pink vile is the Avian strain and is always inject 1st on the higher clipped area followed by the Bovine strain below.

☕️ Another Monday Morning another day sat at a desk!
Feels like a never ending cycle. However we have officially started Rotations even if it feels like nothing has changed, we are into our second week of our research block, looking into a topic of our choice which makes a changed from recored lectures. I’m currently working on anatomy teaching of the equine distal limb and have spent the morning looking at research papers. (And watching desperate housewives!)🙈
Has your Monday morning got off to a good start? 🔬

Unboxing 🎁 ⠀
New footwear! By far one of the most important fashion/shoe choices, I’ve had to make and who would have thought it! Definitely worth investing in a good pair. ⠀⠀
These are Keswick Waterproof Boots in grey and have stood up to every test so far. Warm toes, definitely water proof after a foaling and have scrubbed up well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
