MARK YOUR CALENDARS! 🗓 Newman Nation presents the first-ever National Senior Pet Day on August 3rd. Officially recognized by National Day Archives, National Senior Pet Day acknowledges and celebrates senior companion animals. While there is an entire month dedicated to adopting senior pets (November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month), National Senior Pet Day aims to celebrate all pets in their golden years, regardless of when or where they were adopted or obtained. The worst part about owning a pet is that they don’t live forever, but senior pets are just as incredible and fulfilling as their younger counterparts and have endless love to give. National Senior Pet Day hopes to bring pet owners together to share what makes their senior pets so great and drive awareness to the incredible qualities of older pets so that more people may consider adopting them in the future. While dogs can age at different rates depending on their breed size, dogs are typically considered a senior between 7-10 years old, while cats are considered a senior at age 11. I chose August 3 as the designated date for National Senior Pet Day as it holds special importance to me. August 3, 2014 is the day my family adopted a 13-year-old dog named Newman from a local shelter. When we inquired about adopting him, a staff member questioned why we were interested in an old dog and encouraged us to wait until younger dogs arrived the next week. That experience really opened my eyes to the plight of senior animals in shelters and how they are deemed unworthy. This inspired me to establish Newman Nation in December 2016. Be sure to give your senior pet extra love on August 3 and share with others what makes your old pet so great!
