We want to thank everyone who helped with the “Columbia Coyote”. Unfortunately, it was not able to be trapped and was put down this past weekend by the Columbia Police Department (CPD). It was hiding in the playground at Cosmo Park with a broken leg and severe mange. It was nipping at people and we agree that this was the right call.

There are other coyotes (and a fox) with mange being spotted and the latest was in the Breckenridge subdivision. CPD recommends that we (read this as “you”) call 311 when one is seen so they have a record of it. [EDIT: only call for injured animals, ones in distress, or if they may cause potential danger to humans or pets.]

CPD, Columbia Animal Control, and the Dept. of Conservation generally will not help. But, there seems to be an increase in mange this season and if we can document the sightings we may be able to convince the powers that be to help us help these animals in need.

Thanks again, everyone! We are going to leave this post up for a day or two and then inactivate this page.

HIGH-FIVE to everyone helping with sightings. We were able to narrow things down to three locations for feeding stations. We appreciate those landowners for allowing this to happen. Now, we are down to just one feeding location since the coyote is eating there consistently.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

1) Do not feed the coyote. We need it hungry. You can leave out water if you'd like.

2) You can continue to post sightings, especially if you see it outside of 1/2 mile from the W. Broadway Walmart.

Keep in mind that there are several packs in the area and we are specifically tracking the one with mange. It is also limping. NOTE: We may not respond to your messages or posts but we thank you for keeping us informed.

WHAT'S NEXT
Once it's trapped, we will transport the coyote to a wildlife rescue where they will determine the next steps for the coyote.

WHAT'S NEXT
Currently, we feel like we have enough information to be able to move to the next step which is placing feeding stations. We are now seeking people that own their property, are actively seeing the coyote or live very close to an active spot, and would allow a feeding station on their property.

Again, you must own the property for us to be able to do this.

I got a message that a coyote was seen down Strawn road towards Worley at 8:00 pm.
Could anyone make a map of the area and pin where the sightings are? We are still looking for a location to trap him!

I just spoke to both agents, as of right now there's nothing they can do for it. We will keep working on trapping it and getting it to rescue.

This page was created so we can help the Columbia coyote.
We have a trap, rescue and transport lined up. What we need is volunteers to be on the lookout and let this page know when there are sightings. We also need home owners to let us put the trap on their property and watch it. Follow this page if you would like to be involved!
