Not many sleeps until Christmas and today I thought I'd give you a fun, friendly tip.

If you have purchased your much loved feline a gift try wrapping it.

That way Christmas morning they will be included in all the excitement AND have some fabulous paper to play with. You'll have some laughs watching them do their stuff with the paper and could get some fabulous photos.

Just make sure there's no ribbons or small adornments they can swallow.

Today we're going off topic slightly as this isn't behaviour based, but incredibly important.

Christmas often means indulging in a few treats and it can be tempting to share your food with your pets.

There is a great deal of human food that is toxic to our fur babies, so make sure you check if it's safe before offering anything to your cat or dog.

Remember, fat of any kind has the potential to make your pet incredibly ill. Bones can cause severe constipation and can be a choking hazard. Also, if you do indulge, the THC in ma*****na is incredibly toxic to cats and dogs. Inhaling or consuming it can be dangerous, so if you do have some keep it away from your fur babies.

Today we're going to talk about Christmas gifts for your cat/s.

There are so many ideas, from beds, toys, brushes, treats to cat scratches, it honestly depends on what your cat likes and your budget.

Here are some suggestions that your fur baby might like.

1. A new bed - you can get super flash beds, but honestly Kmart have some awesome beds all at a great price. The blue one is new and our cat has taken to it.

2. Toys - My go to for toys is always catnip and if you want the best catnip toy EVER then Yeowww are the ones to get. I've never seen a cat turn away from these fun toys. The downside is you can only order from Amazon and shipping cost/time isn't great.

3. Scatch poles - you can get these from Kmart, but they are often too short and not very affective. For these I'd suggest visiting a vet clinic or a pet supply store.

4. Treats - Does your cat like temptations? Or do they prefer those little sachets of moose? Whatever they enjoy a treat is always welcome under the tree.

5. Catnip - get the gift that keeps on giving. A catnip or catmint plant. Put them in a pot, position somewhere nice and watch your cat have the time of it's life. The plants are hard to come by in shops, but are cheap and easy to care for. If you are inclined you can harvest the seeds after the flowers die and try growing your own.

6. DIY - a cat doesn't care what your budget is, or how something looks. All they care about is if they like it. YouTube and Google are filled with an abundance of DIY ideas for toys etc for cats. Just be weary of things that could cause injury or harm, like staples, loose threads/wool etc. Otherwise let your imagination run wild and have fun.

We all want our furry critters to be safe, so today we're going to talk about decorations you might want to look out for that could cause problems.

1. Tinsel String - yes it's pretty and yes it's fun to put on your tree, but tinsel string can be dangerous for your pet. Those long strands glinting in the lights and gently moving provide a HUGE temptation for curious cats. The danger is that they could swallow some and end up with intestinal blockages.
As an alternative use the garlands of tinsel instead as they tend to be hardier but still give you the same affect.

2. Glass decorations - this is more for smaller baubles etc that could fit if your cats mouth. Crunched on too hard they could shatter on their mouth and that's something you definitely don't want to have happen.

Try placing these decorations in spots were they can't be reached (I know, not easy if you have a kitten or tree obsessed cat) Place larger plastic decorations lower down so if they do want to bat something at least it's not going to shatter.

3. Lights - This is more for electric lights or those with small, removable covers on the bulbs.

The big thing is to never leave your lights on when you leave the house. Cats tend to chew things and power cords are not exempt. When you head out switch the lights off at the wall. It's that simple.

As far as the lights with detachable covers, try placing these in a part of the tree less accessible to the cat/s. Use a string of led lights to fill any gaps and you are set! Also make sure none of those covers are loose.

That's the last post when it comes to trees. Next up will be awesome gifts for your fur babies, followed by potential food dangers.

It's December and for those who haven't already, it's time to put your tree (or trees) up.

As mentioned previously I'm sharing tips on protecting your tree from your kitties.

1. Hang it from the ceiling. - Weird suggestion but it does work and looks incredible. We have done this before when we had a mischievous kitten and it certainly stopped her from attacking it. Just make sure you secure your hook into a stud in the ceiling ir you'll end up with a tree on your head.

2. Baracade it! - This technique only really works if you have the space, but it works. Decorate your tree and either use a fire guard, kiddy guard/fence or large animal cage to surround the tree. Your kitty will be annoyed, but the tree will be safe.

3. Put up 2 trees. - This also comes down to space but is worth a try. Get a cheap tree and decorate it with cat toys! Catnip ones are preferable, but anything your cat loves will work. "Introduce " them to their tree and once their attention is fixated on it, pop your tree up! All going well they'll be more interested in their tree than yours.

4. No tree - probably not the most popular idea but worth a shot. Who says you need a traditional tree to have a wonderful Christmas? You could create an amazing showpiece using driftwood and cool fabric, or find a painting of a tree and adorn it with lights. Get the kids involved to make it more special.

5. Give up - I'm this person. I figure if they get as much joy out of our tree as we do then that's awesome. I don't put loose tinsel on the tree and make sure it's kitty friendly then leave them to it. Honestly, the first few days can be hilarious but they eventually get over the curiosity stage and ignore it.

Guy Fawkes is fast approaching and that means its time to think of your pets.

Animals are often terrified by Fireworks and many suffer horrendous injuries or die because of them. Birds, cats, dogs, horses etc are all at risk.

Whilst it would be great if nobody actually sold/purchased fireworks that isn't the case, so here are some helpful tips sourced from the internet on how to help your furry and feathery friends.

If your pet suffers extreme anxiety it may be best to contact your local veterinary clinic, BEFORE GUYFAWKES, to get some extra help. Please note they may need to see your pet before they prescribe anything.

Halloween is approaching so I thought I'd pop up a little FYI.

Hands up if you've dressed your cat up.

👋

Yep, I have. Twice I tried and twice I was given a firm NO from my cat. And frankly, fair enough too. Cats don't need to be dressed up and while I could sit here and drone on about why I figured I'd share a video by Jackson Galaxy instead. Not only is he great at explaining things, he's entertaining.

(Note: If you have a Sphynx, Rex or similar breed or a cat with a skin condition then an appropriate top is fine)

It’s an understatement to say I’m not a fan of putting clothes or Halloween costumes on your cat. And I have good reasons for it! Watch and find out. 🐱💜🐱?...

Environmental enrichment is incredibly important. From toys to scratch posts and cat trees, there are a myriad if options.

Of course this should also happen outside. These lucky cats not only have their own garden on the front lawn, they now have a new space just for them out the back.

This work in progress ensures they are entertained, have spots to loung and will have several scratching polls.

It looks like they approve, which we all know isn't a guaranteed thing with cats.

What do you have for your furry critters to help entertain or stimulate them?

This right here.

Having an abundance of toys for your pets is great, but they are far better if you are on the other end of that toy.

Interacting with your pets through play is great for them and you.

Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

Gotta say… that looks like me on the elliptical (but I'm not nearly as comfortable).

Here’s a little tip for anyone whose cats resemble our friend here: toys are infinitely more engaging when you are on the other end of them. Interactive play is the way!

If you have found a sick or injured cat, please contact the SPCA, as they are still available for welfare issues.

The WWT Board of Trustee's wishes to thank all our volunteers, fosters & supporters, especially during these stressful & unknown times.

Stay home, stay safe & if you have to go out, remember your mask & to social distance ❤

Elliott's Toy Review

Toy: Mouse Wand from Amazon

Description: This comes either as a retractable wand or clip together wand. Both have long lines with a fluffy, bright coloured worm on the end.

Pros: This is a fun as toy. It can used on the floor or can swoop through the air (didn't know worms could fly) It's got lots of movement and is supurr soft. Even the wand bit is cool to play with.

Cons: The fluffy fabric is easily pulled off and that means mess. It also means the evil creature "vacoom" appears more often.

I would 100% purrcent recommend this toy. My sisters and I all enjoy playing with it, in fact Mum had to buy another one to keep us happy.

While this isn't about cat behaviour, it does show how much an owners behaviour or mental wellbeing can impact the animals they share their lives with.

Please, if you or someone you know has a hoarding problem reach out for or offer help. The flow on affect can be substantial.

Hoarding cases are always upsetting, but in one home in Parsippany, New Jersey rescuers were inundated with the smell of cat urine before they even entered. Once inside, the smell became overwhelming, burning people's eyes, noses, and throats. The cats and kittens trapped inside were forced to walk....

Elliott's Toy Review

Toy: Fish shaped linen toy with ribbons

Description: This toy is attached to a slender, plastic rod with a long piece of elastic.

This toy has been sitting in our toy box FOREVER. Well, the day Mum pulled it out for me to play with was the best day ever. I chirrup every time I see it and enjoy long play sessions with it. My favourite thing to do is wait for it to almost disappear around a corner. At that point I wiggle my butt and then zoom after it!!! It's so cool.

Pros about this toy: Everything. I like attacking the fish, string and plastic rod!

Cons about this toy: The plastic rod isn't very long and the elastic is starting to break. Also, my little sister tries to play with it at the same time, which is super annoying.

Overall I really like this toy. I'm pretty fussy with toys and it's coolio to find one that makes me happy. 10/10 would recommend this toy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Play time is an integral part of a cats mental and physical wellbeing. Play involving you, their humans, is also important.
The question is, what toys are available?

Well, Elliott is going to do weekly reviews on the various toys he has access too. He'll tell you if he thinks they are fun or boring and whether you should try them with your fur babies.
Elliott is incredibly picky when it comes to toys, so rest assured, you'll be getting an honest review.

Animal behaviour is a tricky thing. It's a process of elimination and patience is so important.

More important than that though is teamwork. It takes 1 person, just 1, to completely derail any chances of changing an animals behaviour. Without teamwork things will not improve and sometimes the situation can worsen and that's something none of us want.

Remember, there is no I in team.

This right here.
You can't just throw a new cat or kitten into a household and hope for the best.
Gradually introducing new additions is so important.

By now you’ve probably heard me say over and over that adopting two kittens is better than one (for lots of reasons). But what if you have an adult cat and want to adopt him/her a friend? While there are a few adult cats who do need to live in a single-cat household, the vast majority enjoy having a cat friend… BUT introduction is key! Take your time and read up on proper ways to introduce cats to each other (I have a chapter on this in my book, Total Cat Mojo). And in the meantime, check out my video on introductions: https://youtu.be/tsYT7yIOdqQ

And thank you to ’s Patti Basker for sharing this sweet picture of two of her foster kittens (and thank you for fostering!).

08/07/2021

Buddy and Spooks were pretty close and it was obvious when Buddy passed away Spooks was affected by the loss. She seemed to be actively looking for him and changed her sleeping spot so she was nearer to the humans in the household.

You see animals grieve too. While not in the way humans do, they feel the loss of another animal or a person they were close to.

There are a number of things you can do to help them during this period of time.

One is to allow them to see the body of their furry friend or human companion. Allow them the chance to smell and inspect them.

Most times your pet will come through the grieving process absolutely fine. However, should they stop eating, grooming or become lethargic etc you will need to seek veterinary attention.
