Rawhide chews are not christmas gifts; they are unplanned ER vet visits just waiting to happen!
They are terrible for dogs but stores sell them because people keep buying them. Rawhide are harmful from processing with irritating chemicals, the small choking hazard pieces, the swallowed piece sits in the stomach and irritates your dogs stomach for months or forms a complete blockage from a big piece or several smaller pieces clumping together in the dogs intestines.

Canine intestinal blockage or foreign body surgery costs about 2-3k in this area to treat an obstruction. That $7 candy cane rawhide doesn't look so cute now, does it?

These are the most common rawhide risks:

Contamination. As with pet toys, rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. And, as with other pet (or human) foods, Salmonella or E. coli contamination is possible. Even humans can be at risk when coming into contact with these bacteria on rawhide treats.

Digestive irritation. Some dogs are simply sensitive or allergic to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture processes. This can cause problems, including diarrhea and vomiting.

Choking or blockages. Rawhide bones and other edible chews can pose a choking and blockage risk. In fact, this is a much bigger risk than contamination or digestive irritation. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Depending on its size and where it is located, a local vet may be able to remove these pieces fairly easily through the throat. But sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.

It doesn't take much. Similar to the way small pieces of hair clog a drain, the small pieces of rawhide can clump and block your dog similar to the various items pictured in the first photo below. This is usually a hard thing to diagnose because rawhide is skin. Xrays don't show skin very well so usually a contrast study with barium is needed. Typically a barium study runs $500-900 in this area. Once the blockage is found then the surgery or endoscopic retrieval can be done. The best case scenario is your dog is puking and pooping out the pieces and this can be painful it there's a pointed piece that injures the tissues on its way out.

Please save your dog some pain and yourself hours waiting at an emergency clinic and thousands of dollars.

Don't buy rawhide.

This is something everyone should see.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

"Heads Up if You're Feeding Your Pets Store-bought Jerky Treats!!⚠️

A new veterinary study published in the journal of Tierärztliche Praxis found that dogs are still developing a kidney disorder called Fanconi-like syndrome when fed pet jerky treats.

Fanconi is a disorder of kidney function that results in excess excretion of glucose, electrolytes and amino acids in urine. Signs of the illness included decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, polydipsia and polyuria.

This new study isn't actually new news to veterinarians, in 2007, veterinarians became aware of Fanconi-like signs in multiple other dog breeds without a recognized genetic predisposition, and alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prompting an investigation. The chief suspect then was found to be commercial jerky treats.

As of today, the FDA has received approximately 5,200 complaints of illnesses associated with consumption of chicken🍗, duck🦆, or sweet potato🍠 jerky treats. The reports involve more than 6,200 dogs, 26 cats, three people, and include more than 1,140 canine deaths." - Rodney Habib

Rice-consumption is considered a risk factor for chronic arsenic toxicity in humans. A pilot study conducted within the DogRisk research group at the University of Helsinki found that dogs eating rice-based dry dog foods had higher hair arsenic levels than dogs whose diet did not contain rice.

What can rice do for your dog and cat's diet?

Rice will:

- Acidify your animal’s body creating a perfect environment for parasites.
- Block the absorption of essential nutrients.
- Cause spikes in blood sugar.
- Dehydrate your animal’s body causing strain on vital organs.
- Slow down the elimination of waste from the body.
- Contribute to the accumulation of disease causing toxins.

*conventional, organic, GMO: white rice, brown rice, wild rice, golden rice (GMO rice), ALL types of rice.

Rice in the diet is a major contributing factor to inflammatory issues and diseases in dogs and cats, including:
- Allergies
- Anxiety
- A**l gland issues
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Diarrhea
- Heart issues and disease
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Kidney disease and failure
- Leaky gut
- Obesity
- Oral health issues and disease
- Urinary tract issues
and other inflammatory issues and conditions.

All plants have specific affinities to various minerals and elements in soil. The rice plant has a natural affinity to arsenic, meaning the roots of the plant seek to draw arsenic from the soil.

Fertilizer (used on conventional rice crops) contain inorganic (synthetic) arsenic. Rice plants absorb the synthetic arsenic. When your dog and cat consume the rice they are also consuming inorganic arsenic. Inorganic arsenic is bio-accumulative toxin.

Protect your dog and cat’s health, don't include rice in their diet. Continue here:

A dogs and cat’s digestive tract are evolved to process fresh moisture rich whole foods:
Animal protein (muscle meat, organs).
Animal fat.
Raw non-load bearing bone.
Plant material including a small amount of greens, berries, seeds and herbs.

Rice won't treat or remedy diarrhea. Rice ferments in the gut, and can exacerbate your animal's diarrhea. You'll find natural interventions for treating diarrhea in dogs and cats here:
