Overweight dogs aren’t cute. It’s not funny, and it matters. Some rare medical issues aside, it’s caused by poor animal care. That’s uncomfortable, but it’s true.

Stop over feeding your dogs. If you don’t know how to do that, speak with your vet.

Anyone local interested in meeting a gorgeous girl?

~AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION~ Meet Roxy, a black and tan 9 year old female Kelpie. Roxy is an affectionate sweet girl, she loves people and pats. This very pretty girl is loving her 2 walks a day. Roxy is at her happiest just being with you. Whether it’s being your shadow around the house, or just chilling out on the floor wherever you are, she is the perfect company.

Roxy knows how to sit and is learning new words quickly as she is intelligent and eager to please. Being new to walks Roxy pulls on the lead but with a harness this is improving. Roxy pays little attention to other dogs on walks. Roxy rarely jumps, and on the odd occasion she does, it’s to gain attention for a pat. Since Roxy likes being the centre of attention she can occasionally get a little jealous of her foster brother, but this has improved greatly since being in foster care. She can be a bit protective of her food but this is easily managed by feeding separately.

Meeting new people is no problem for this human loving sweet girl. Roxy is toilet trained and learnt quickly to use a doggy door, and is learning what it’s like to be an inside dog. Inside is her happy place! Roxy sleeps on her bed outside her foster carers open bedroom door, as being close makes her feel secure.

Roxy will need 5foot fencing and a secure yard with some space to run around. Storms are very scary for Roxy and being outside in a storm she gets very distressed so access inside is really important for her. Mowers and vacuum cleaners make Roxy very excited as she tries to round them up! She also likes fetching a tennis ball.

Due to her age Roxy would suit a part time/stay at home worker or retiree as companionship is very important to her. She may also suit a quieter family with children over 12. Roxy currently lives with her 11yo foster brother and may suit being with an older male dog, but we think she would be in her element soaking up all the love as an only dog. Roxy has not been tested with cats or pocket pets.

For more information on Roxy please contact Jen at [email protected], You can fill out the adoption questionnaire here https://tinyurl.com/drnadopt

You can see more about ravishing Roxy by visiting her profile https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/898917

Roxy is in foster care in the Newcastle Region NSW. Her adoption fee includes desexing, vaccination, flea/worm treated and microchipping.

This is such a great explainer of what you’re watching when dogs play.

Anyone know this girl? She’d like to get home to her family.

Do you know her? This girl was found in Wallsend, and as you can see, she's very friendly. But sadly, she's also very lost. Her chip details are out of date, so we're none the wiser on who she belongs to, but would love to get her home. If she's yours, ring 4974 2000 and ask to speak with our Animal Facility.

I love dog movies , but let’s think super carefully about whether we have the time and mental fortitude to turn these brilliant breeds into what we see in the movies, or whether we’d just create a bored, anxious mess.

There is a movie coming out on Feb 18 called "Dog". It stars Channing Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois. It's a road trip/buddy movie.

People are going to see this film and many will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

A highly trained Malinois is a work of art. So is Michelangelo's statue of David but I don't necessarily want it in my living room.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local rescue.

Be honest with yourself about the amount of time that you have to dedicate to training one of these dogs. Not the person that you want to be but the person that you are right now. Sitting on your ass and reading this post.

If you are still determined to get one. You can stem the inevitable tidal wave of Malinois that will be surrendered to the shelters by sourcing your dog in one of 3 places:

Your local shelter
A local Malinois rescue
A real, ethical breeder (researching one is hard work but an ethical breeder will prove their dogs and require that you return the dog to them if you can't keep it)

DO NOT get a Malinois from the guy down the street. Don't help backyard breeders line their pockets. Pure bred doesn't equal good breeding.

If you see the popularity of these dogs sky rocket and think you can make a quick buck by breeding some. May all of your financial ventures fail one after another.

From the bottom of my heart, I love this breed. I know what's coming and so do the shelters and rescues. Richard Glover at SMH got this right over the weekend!

Yes, Kelpies (and many other breeds) are working dogs, which means they need tasks and exercise and routines and stimulation beyond what you might imagine for a Frenchie or a Maltese. But if you have the capacity to provide that wherever you are, and you love them with all your heart, they’ll work hard for you every day.

My girl Fly is almost 18 months old, and sleeping soundly on my bed having spent a busy morning being taught by my terriers how to kill rats without making a mess.

I’ll leave you with the article and the cute photo and not the dead rat.

I’m not crying, you are.

I’m not crying, you are.

Judy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.

This is such a good resource, both the chart and the article behind it. Please educate yourselves on how to safely feed bones, instead of just removing them from your dog’s diet.

If you have multiple dogs and need some guidance on how to feed bones safely, reach out to a trainer, either local or over zoom.

BONES, BONES, BONES! I can't even count the number of times people told me they worry about bones splintering and harming dogs. The reality is, crunchy RAW (NOT COOKED) bones are essential for keeping teeth healthy.

Here is a handy chart to explain what bones you can give your dog and what purpose they have: FOOD, DENTAL or PLAY.

Also, here's an article on the topic of bone feeding: https://peterdobias.com/blogs/blog/16688340-what-bones-are-good-for-dogs
