Why learn to forge shoes that we can buy?

Owning our trade, understanding the shape and transitions in the trim and mimicking that with intent when building the shoe. $2 of steel tens of thousands in education just feels better than a $45 shoe machined and purchased. The network of peers met becoming friends made on the journey is priceless. Anyone interested can check out educational post on the World Championship Blacksmith page and YouTube, or the last week of July (Friday and Saturday) at the Hot Agusta farrier competition while enjoying a day at the county fair.

I have many pictures of this guy over the years. Some time before I acquired this client the horse injured himself and it seems to never heel. The bar shoe protects the heel quarter from (essentially a hangnail) pulling open again, otherwise this guy is barefoot on the other 3.

This horse came to me a couple shoeings ago. A lease-purchase from out of state. I love this guy but he has had some issues to overcome. This set came with radiographs to follow, a couple sets of my work to get an understanding of how his feet will respond, and quite an improvement in his level of comfort. The out of state owner had some concerns with his previous shoe application so I opted for more details this set. Handmade to improve nail placement. Measurements to show a 40/60 positive ratio and rocker toe to include weight bearing contact throughout the full radius of the dorsal wall. He had been in full support pour in pads so I opted to let the frog and sole exfoliate naturally and save some money that may have not need spent.
