This is chewy’s warehouse. 🤯 but not surprising. Clinics are inundated with prescription requests from them.

Your LOCAL clinic cannot compete with this. Your clinic that you ask to sponsor the FFA banquet, donate to a school event, or let your kid shadow at. Your local clinic that pays taxes in your area, creates jobs, and stays late to help your pet. 🐶 🐱 👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ 💪 🐮 🐴 🐰

Right or wrong, the traditional veterinary business model includes prescription and product sales. This has been a hot topic since I graduated a few moons ago. Service fees have to go up in the industry beyond inflation so clinics can stay afloat as this model changes. Most have their own online store, so please check it before going big box. Just some food for thought.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time listening to surgery specialist talks lately - picking up tips and tricks from canine pancreatic biopsies to rabbit eye procedures. There is ALWAYS room for growth.

I have always had a fear of burning out and practicing dated medicine. So, I made a personal and professional commitment to lifelong learning beyond state requirements. It’s part of what makes this quickly evolving field enjoyable! I look forward to learning from esteemed colleagues for many years to come.

Why more than one radiograph view is important!
Do you see the foreign body? This was a doodle puppy…. If you have a doodle they are well known for eating all the things! After a quick gastrotomy this baby went home doing great.

A few weekends ago in Tulsa my barn family had 5 of the top 12 in a field of 31 Hunter Derby horses, among other winnings🔥 So proud of them all!

I only do a small amount of equine work for friends these days. But it sure made me smile when I realized I wrote the health certificates for all of the lovely horses in this photo! 🏆 🐴 👩‍⚕️

Cases seem to come in waves... lately lots of reptiles! 🦎🐍🐢
Exotics often depend on specific environments to reduce the risk of illness so proper husbandry is very important. This beauty came in for an initial wellness visit!
(P.S. My services do not include venomous or otherwise dangerous to work on creatures such as alligators or lions. 🙂)

*Gastric Dilatation Volvulus aka real life scary monster! This is when the stomach bloats and literally twists. These cases require emergency surgery and are usually seen in deep chested large breed dogs, especially Great Danes.

We wanted to take a minute to introduce everyone to Dr. Stec, Pet Vet! 🐾 With our clinic as busy as ever, and Dr. Shearhart’s baby coming any day, we are thrilled to have Dr. Stec come in for a little relief work!

Dr. Stec graduated vet school from Oklahoma State University. She is currently living in Alma with her 2 kids and large animal veterinarian husband! In her free time she enjoys riding and spending time with horses.

Dr. Stec will be in about once a week, through October, so don’t be afraid to say hi if you see her in the parking lot! 👋🏻

My mini me got the iPad all day yesterday after an oral procedure. ❤️ There is a unique difference between the responsibility of administering general anesthesia and the helplessness of having your baby receive it. While we hope she is done with procedures, these experiences have helped me further empathize with owners’ feelings regarding pets’ surgery. Do not misunderstand - there is a difference between children and pets - but for many of us, pets are family too. Please know that if your furry (or scaly!) ones are entrusted to me I will not take that responsibility lightly. ❤️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🐶🐱❤️

Meet “Maple Surple!” During this corona craziness, we added a puppy. I’m unexpectedly home more, so needed more to do😝. Actually, we had been waiting on the right puppy for our family. It has been super important that she received all her puppy vaccines on time (which we are currently able to perform in our area) and got started on preventatives. We still have a couple boosters left and her big kid rabies. 💉

Arkansas is number THREE in the nation for heartworms. I diagnose heartworm disease
all. the. time.
Please, please, please make sure your dog is current on preventative. It is always a prescription medication. (Sadly, we often see folks who thought their over the counter flea/tick control covered heartworms.) The name says it all - literally worms 🐛 in a dog’s heart 😱
There are many preventative options that can get confusing - come in and I’m happy to discuss the pros and cons of the choices!

While I don’t work on birds anymore, I would like all bird owners to know NOT to use nonstick / Teflon products in their home. Gases released can cause sudden death in less than 24 hours❗️❗️❗️Personally, we have phased out all nonstick products from our home despite not having any avian pets... This particular toxicity smarts of how canaries used to be brought down into mines - if the canary succumbed to carbon monoxide, it was time to get the miners out. ⛏Plus, stainless steel and cast iron are probably more sustainable choices. Right?
