I recently had the great fortune of talking, at length, with a prominent pioneer of American Herpetoculture. It was a great honor to me personally. I did my best to pay respects and appreciation to this person for their contributions to Herpetoculture, from which we are all directly benefitting today. That era of herpers led the way in starting to figure out captive husbandry, reproduction, and celebration of so many wonderful species.

Something that occurred to me during the conversation is, “am I doing my part...” with respect to promoting and championing awareness of species. There was a time when herpetoculture was not as heavily concentrated in Ball Pythons, Leopard Geckos, and Bearded Dragons. Those are all wonderful species, absolutely… AND there is also a whole world out there of other incredible species as well, with a tremendous variety of phenotypes, physiology, behavior, and natural history.

Those of you who know us personally know we are not huge “social media” people. We kind of prioritize taking care of our animals first, then our customers, and there isn’t always a ton of time left over to do more online engagement. With that said, maybe Ironwood can make better efforts to try to help promote the species that we are working with (and just more species in general), such that others can “discover” them and appreciate their unique magnificence. So, if you ever have questions about any species we work with, or there’s something you want to see more of, please do reach out any time (message us, leave a comment, email us, whatever). We live and breathe reptiles, and certainly will always take an opportunity to share in the joy and celebration of them…
