Two days off the antibiotic drops, and Gray is back at square one. We are starting him back on the antibiotic that was working for him tonight, and I guess he’s on it indefinitely because any time we stop, his eye is infected again.

We got good news about Gray’s eye today. His tear values improved from a 5 to a 10, still very low, but we will take any improvement at this point! This means he is responding to the medication. Support Gray: https://gofund.me/32049cb5

Fergus is so full of himself. 😂

Gray is still dealing with eye issues, and now is also dealing with cracked lips from licking them. 🙃 He’s a mess.

...until further notice.

Our medical dogs have brought me to my knees... they are BREAKING US!

NO fosters.

Several fosters we do have are giving their dogs back due to various reasons.

Adoptions are almost non-existent.

We will NEVER survive if things don't get better.

I'm not sure what to say. All words have been said. All pleas have been made. There are more Danes in need than EVER and we are in no position to help.

Heartbroken.

Tired.

Disappointed.

Losing hope.

Other rescues are shutting down altogether. Some are making several of their long time dogs "last call" because there is no space and no funds and no help.

ODAAT is struggling to stay afloat without having to take drastic measures... but the horizon looks bleak. 💔

Wet compress time! Gray’s eye got goopy again today, even on medications and antibiotics. We do have the windows open, so I wonder if allergies are a part of the problem?

Gray is a special needs Great Dane. Gray has full body deformities due to an unknown genetic condition caused by inbreeding. He did not learn how to walk until he was 5 months old, and his life expectancy was 4 months, but he has let nothing stop him. Gray is now 7.5 years old, which is great for a typical Great Dane and monumental for him. Over the years, Gray has been on many expensive and life saving medical treatments including at least 5-6 overnight stays and emergency surgery for bloat, which can be fatal even for healthy dogs.

He is currently on many preventative and quality of life enhancing medications and treatments to keep him comfortable in his advanced age including very expensive specially formulated eye drops for his chronic autoimmune dry eye condition, carprofen for inflammation, adequan injection for arthritis, dasuquin, Tylenol with codein, a lifetime supply of gasx, reglan, cold laser appointments, physical therapy, and more. Gray’s upkeep is monumentally expensive and help is and always has been appreciated because it takes a village.

Thank you for your support! Gray and our family appreciate you! We will also record any Venmo donations on the gofundme. It takes a village.

Gray’s eye specialist told us today that he is one of their most cooperative patients that is not afraid of being poked and prodded, and he is one of very few dogs they see that are not afraid of having their cone taken on or off. He does not have an ulcer! We are continuing antibiotic drops for another two weeks, and adding cyclosporine and an increased dosage of Tacrolimus to his eye medications. Hopefully we can get his dry eye under control. 🤞🏻His bill for today was $290. I will post an invoice to Patreon for his supporters there. 🩷 patreon.com/quinnsstory

Gray’s eye is still a bit goopy today, but overall better. They’re going to increase the concentration of his eye drops to hopefully treat his chronic dry eye. He is producing very little tears at this point, so we have been managing with his Tacrolimus drops and gel ointment eye drops 3-4x a day. Hopefully we can figure out how to get his eye stable again.

Since we still have some people helping with our vet bills through Patreon, here is our invoice from today. We are also still carrying a $500 balance on our care credit currently. Thank you if you are one of the people that help with this! Gray is always racking up large balances. Patreon.com/quinnsstory

Gray does not have an ulcer thankfully. He is getting antibiotics today. We are scrambling to get his anti inflammatory eye drops. They ran out last night of all times. Both vets are working on it. He will be in a cone until this clears up though. Anyway, our primary vet confirmed with us that his eye is going to be an uphill continuing battle for the rest of his life. 🥲 They gave us an extra bottle of antibiotic eye drops to have on hand so he doesn’t need to wait next time.

More squinty and draining this morning. Hopefully we can get him to his specialist this week.

Gray’s eye disease is still uncontrolled. He was doing a lot better, but I noticed he was starting to rub it yesterday. Tonight the mucus started, so he’s back in a cone. At least it will prevent him from destroying his eye while we figure out an appointment for him. We prefer the eye specialist, but time is of the essence with eyes, so we may have to go to our primary vet.

Gray at his eye exam today! His specialist appointments have been frequent, and it has been over $1000 since July. His medications are also very expensive. He is on adequan which is $100/bottle, and carprofen with is around $40. If you want to help with his ongoing medical care, we have Venmo and PayPal. Links are in our bio on instagram or you can DM me. We are also on Patreon. Our Patrons help tremendously with vet bills each month. Patreon.com/quinnsstory

Gray seems a little less out of it this morning and has less of that stress hormone smell. He has reeked the past few days. He only smells like that after surgeries or hospitalizations, so he has been very stressed about the eye. We picked up his dilation drops yesterday, and they only had a small bottle for the same price as a big bottle of the same medication, but he needs it every 48 hours, so we couldn’t wait on the bigger bottle to be shipped. I’m hoping that this heals properly so we don’t have to repeat this process all over again. I feel so bad for him.

Debridement is when they take a special dremel with a diamond tip to rough up the cornea where the eye ulcer is to promote healing. He will need to wear a cone (that he can’t walk with) for two weeks. The bottom edge catches the ground because of how low his head is. I’m wondering if cutting a few inches off of it would compromise it? The cone is just too long for him, but I don’t want him to be able to rub the eye.
