Rethink, recompose, replan.
Plan A.) take Ve out to the arena and just chill without running me over.
New plan.) get halter on Ve and give her treats.
So many times we have a plan in our heads of what we are going to get done that day that we forget that these are animals that don’t always agree with our plan. Especially the training horses. It is OKAY to change your plan if you need to. It is OKAY to go take a breath away from your animal when you feel frustrated. They can sense the frustration and anger in you and when you get that they won’t work for you. It is OKAY that your big milestones may be someone else’s baby steps. Things take time and when we rush is when holes are created.
On a more upbeat note, yesterday Mac read how much his mama needed a hug. He was a little unsure but he let me hug him anyways. I will never believe anyone who says these horse don’t have the ability to read what we need as much as we want to be able to read them. They feel things like we do and are willing to offer us what we need when we truly need it. I love this horse so much, even when he is making everything so frustrating. It’s moments like this that remind me that he’s trying.
DIFD lost one of the most important ones yesterday. If you don’t know this is SG Lil’Mis BrightHope, aka Hope or Baby, Hope came to me as a 4 month old when I needed her most, when I needed hope. She came to me when my world got turned upside down when Dewey broke his shoulder. She was there when he passed away. She was Fire’s saving grace and helped her through her grief. She was a ray of Hope for all of us in a dark time. She was the first horse I ever trained and I’ll be honest she was a wonky pancake. She was by no means perfect. She hated loping and arena work. She loved trail rides and hobo rides. She was stubborn and opinionated and wanted things her way. But she was sweet and smart and willing to try when it was important to you. She would go anywhere I asked her to go. She taught me so much about every aspect of training. She hated trees saddles and bits, if she could have done everything in a halter and lead rope and ba****ck she would have been the happiest horse in the world. She was what her name suggested. And now with her gone I hold onto the hope she instilled in me as a young 13 year old. 11 years was to short of a time to have you, but mama fire is gonna be so happy to see her baby again. Forever loved my sweet Hope.
My new product projects. More variety to come.
It’s amazing what a massage can accomplish and I love watching how much even one can help a horse. This is my personal horse Shotzee, she has always been tight in her hind end due to an old injury I was told. She also has always had trouble picking up her right lead. This weekend we were at a barrel race and I could tell she was having some difficulty stretching out. I gave her a good work over Saturday morning just to help loosen her up a little and make her more comfortable. I found several spots that she was not happy with me touching. I didn’t expect this to fix everything just help make her happier while running. Well while we were in the warm-up pen. She surprised me by picking up her right lead without any issues no fight or anything. That is so unlike this mare. Then later on in her pattern she had a little more stretch to her stride. She was feeling fantastic. So if your horse is having some trouble, I’m not saying massage is a fix all, but it never hurts.
I will be in Verndale this weekend. If you’re there and your horse needs a massage give me a call.
Thank you Wendy for the beautiful sign, I love it.

It’s been so long since I’ve done a Mac update… and honestly that is because I haven’t done much with him. Life just seems to have a wonderful habit of getting in the way. Nevertheless, I made time today and to my amazement I got him haltered in the open pasture with all the other horses out there, I lead him to the arena and into the round pen, I got him to lounge both directions, and got to rub all over him. He still struggles with his right side a bit so we will be working harder on that, but I am so proud of him today. He’s cominc, slowly but surely.
❤️ DIFD Hey Macarena.

You can PM us for more information on pricing and to schedule a lesson.
Massage can be a great way to give back to your horse. Massage is a great thing for horses of all ages and activity levels. It helps with so many aspects of not only their mental health, but physical health as well. As the colder months descend upon our great northern state, our horses are getting breaks from their regular riding schedules. Massage can be a great added benefit to keeping your horse relaxed and to keep those muscles stimulated so our horses are ready and willing come time to start up for next years riding.
If interested in a little pampering for your Equine friend PM me and I will fit you into my schedule.

Before I broke my shoulder I had reached a point where there was hope for us and I was seeing progress. Then after a few long months of not working I wasn’t sure how coming back would go. He’s curious of us and I was still working on being able to pet him and treats but adding the halter was a whole other ball game he didn’t seem interested in participating in. But tonight I convinced him that the halter was yet again not going to kill him and now I see our future lining up for us again. So proud of my Mr. Macklebee tonight.

So update for everybody, I know I had posted that there were some changes coming to DIFD Horses and so I thought I’d let you all in on what’s been going on here at DIFD.
Along with Kenzie getting her gorgeous new filly, I have spent the last 4 days over in Becker with Armstrong Equine taking Leda’s massage therapy course. It was an amazing 4 days filled with knowledge and horses and great people.
I learned so much and am so excited to start offering my services. As part of the class I have to complete some case studies with different horses, so if you are interested in getting work done on your horse, reach out. Massage therapy offers so many benefits to your horse and is a good way to show a little extra love to these amazing creatures that give us their all.
The absolute and udder amazement I feel with this filly. When I brought her home on Friday I set into place a 2 week training plan which included letting me pet her and getting a halter on her. Well it has been 2 days and I have already completed that plan. This little girl is going to be a very nice one. I am so glad we have the chance to make her great.

Little baby Smooch had a big day. She came into the barn early so we could pull out all the burs she had buried in her coat, mane, and tail. She stood like a good girl while we brushed and pulled at the burs. After which she had her first lesson in standing tied which she did like a champion. Afterwards she had her feet trimmed which was edging close to all the patience she had for one day. But for her to stand all morning and not bat an eyelash, I’m just super impressed with her.

We want to welcome the newest member to the family. Belle is a 4 month old bay roan QH with some really nice lines to her. With having to sell Maverick for our safety I was a little heartbroken. I decided I was going to wait until spring to find a new horse when I was scrolling on Facebook and saw this sweet face. I couldn’t pass her up. A 6 hour trip yesterday and she is home. She has not been handled before and already today I am able to walk up and give her scratches. She’s got a very nice head on her shoulders and I’m excited to see her progress. She is very muddy with all the rain we have gotten I will get some better pictures posted once I get her cleaned up.

Hey everybody, its been a while since I have made a post. This summer has been a different one. Starting off with me breaking my shoulder. This incident put me out the whole summer, which was really weird for me. I'm happy to say my shoulder is getting better and I'm starting to get back to semi-normal activity. At the beginning of the summer when I broke my shoulder it felt like the worst possible timing. I mean there is never a great time to break a bone, but it was just before show season, Kenzie and I had just started taking in client horses, I had just made some major breakthroughs with Mr. Macklebee (my untouchable). It seemed as though everything I had been working for was being torn apart at the seams and there was nothing I could do to stop it. This unplanned leave from the horse world has forced me to take a step back and really look at where I am headed and where I want to be headed. It gave me and Kenzie some time to discuss what directions we possibly wanted to take DIFD Horses in. This was difficult seeming it felt like we where getting knocked down before we ever got a chance to really stand. With a lot of time, thought, and input, we are starting to figure out what that direction may be. We are super excited for some of the changes coming to DIFD Horses. We have taken what felt like a setback and a very discouraging sign and a are turning it into opportunities to grow and become better for ourselves, our business, our horses, and our clients. We are so blessed to have found the silver lining in a bad situation and for opportunities to keep growth even through setback.
Old man Willie got to come out and play while teaching one of our students about ground handling and a little showmanship. I think he had fun other then dealing with the flies. Such a sweet old man.
Levina aka Vee got to come out to help teach a horsemanship lesson this week. She has been with DIFD for 5 years. She never bonded with any of us and a year ago when Kenzie walked on the property she wasn’t expecting the inevitable bond that would form. Vee’s future just got a whole lot brighter here at DIFD.
Follow her journey as her training progresses.
On the other end of things DIFD French Kiss aka Smoochie got a lesson in halter breaking, featuring my mom doing the halter breaking. This is after she sassy butt decided it was ok to try and kick Mom. She was not thrilled with being controlled. She’ll get it.
Kenzie doing some ground work with training horse Duke. She absolutely loves putting in the time and seeing a horses ground manners change.
Put the first official ride on Luna today. She did amazing. She’ll be off and running in no time, ok maybe not running but definitely moving a little bit. She is figuring out what pressure on the reins means and that tapping on her sides means go forward. We still have some ground work to smooth out, but this was amazing. She is gonna make someone a great little horse.
Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge
Got on our training horse Abby for the first time today. She did amazing. Really impressed with how she is picking everything up.

Introducing Luna to her new home for the next couple months. Safe to say she seemed to settle in nicely, not caught on video is her meeting her next door neighbors and heading over to eat from their shared hay bale.
Unloading part 2. I wasn’t sure if she was going to shoot out of the trailer stall with how tense she was so I took some precautions. She blew me away with how settled she unloaded.
Unloading her part one she was fantastic the whole ride home, but you could definitely see she was a bit tense when we opened the door of the trailer. She let me get her lead rope on without a big blow up though.
So, I want to take a minute and talk about our mental game as competitors or as riders in general. We put a lot of stress on competing and winning, making sure our horses are fed properly, exercised, watered, and just cared for. We are responsible for the well being of an athlete and that can take a lot out of a person. Beyond that what happens when something goes wrong. For instance when our horses slip and fall. This has been on my mind lately for a few reasons. One big one being the Autumn and her fall, but also mine and Trouble’s fall during the WSCA championship show. As you may know Trubs is 25 and I’m very blessed to still be running him at the level I do. As a result of this I tend to bubble wrap him. So when we came down during our safety circle after jumping figure 8 I was worried, I still worry. The video I chose to post along with this is proof to me that I’ve got work to do on my mental game when it comes to running Trouble. We knocked our first can because the only thing I could think coming in is ‘What if he slips?’ All the possibilities of him getting hurt running through my head at once causing me to loose focus on what’s important, helping him run the best pattern he can run. I failed him because my mental game is still off while riding him. I’m not saying I know everything and that you always have to just let things go, all I’m trying to say is that it’s important to remember that in the moment you need to be present. Not thinking of past runs, or the possibility of future falls. Just riding in the moment and remembering that your partner isn’t thinking of ‘that one time when’. They are just focused on doing the job you have asked them to do. Just be present with them.
Went up to BigFork for Autumn’s benefit run. Our first open didn’t go great, but we pulled together for our second open and got 1st in the 3D. What an awesome way to raise money for Autumn, she is such a strong young woman, prayers are with her and her family as she continues on with her recovery.
Old man trouble had fun playing in the dirt tonight. I don’t know if this horse will ever slow himself down, but I’m definitely more cautious in the way I ride him. He still loves his job though, so why take that away from him.
Jockey error and over riding caused us to hit our first. The jockey (me) trying to save our first set us up horrible for our second. But that’s how the game is played sometimes. Love the try in this mare even when things are going wrong. I had a trainer one time tell me ‘the horse doesn’t know that they knocked a barrel’. She certainly didn’t know.
Troubles run was, well I’m not sure what to call it. It both was good and not at the same time. There are some thing is I love about it and some things I don’t. But I can say he was feeling amazing. My knee after rubbing that barrel however is not. I truly appreciate every time I get to swing a leg over my trusty old man. I count him a million times when counting my blessings. Can’t wait for summer to be here.
A bit of tough luck today for the slack run. I was just letting Shotzee do her thing and we started on the wrong lead. Fumbling around first we set up wrong for second and knocked, but on the positive side I know what we need to work at. So proud of this little mare she handled this weekend with grace and just a bit of sass. Next year we’ll make that performance. There’s quite a bit of work ahead of us though.
Troubles run from today. It would have been so much better if I could get my crap together and ride him the way he deserves. But tomorrow is a new day and I’m actually really happy with his run today.
Shotzee’s run from today. You can’t see it, but she was a little nervous. The warm up pen worries her a little bit. Overall I’m happy with how she preformed.
