How important is being a critical thinker to you? 🤔
Critical thinking is defined as “self-guided, self-disciplined thinking which attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in a fair-minded way”. The reason this is so difficult for people is it involves confronting the uncomfortable and questioning one’s own, possibly long held belief system.
To quote one of my favorite authors, Mo Gawdat, “Every question you ever ask will be governed by a refinement process I call DDAA, Discovery, Debate, Acceptance, Arrogance….Comfort with our knowledge inevitably leads to periods of arrogance, we think our knowledge is confirmed beyond any doubt and argue fiercely with anyone who contradicts it only to realize, in the next wave of discovery that what we know is not complete and sometimes not even correct. This cycle has always been our journey.”
(Chapter 5 of Solve For Happy, “What We Know”)
The trainer who succumbs to this historically predictable cycle inevitably discards potentially useful information that can help them, their clients and dogs. Just remember, no matter what belief you hold, your observations which support those beliefs are seen through the tiniest peep whole of the world, giving you a microscopic picture of reality. Change the window and with that, so too will your observations. What we know is really not much and throughout time, whether it’s physics or health, “what we KNOW” has been proven as fact, then refuted, many times over.
Remove arrogance from the picture and avoid becoming the proverbial sheep, no matter what “side” you’re on.
This is Part TWO of "Converting A Balanced Trainer".
If becoming a more educated dog trainer is on your New Year’s resolution, our brand new You Tube video series is a must watch. Guaranteed to expand your mind and peak your curiosity, get up to date on some of the R+ movement’s points, arguments, counter points, where balanced training fails and what we can realistically expect from dog training in the future. Both R+ and Balanced trainers have much to offer each other but unfortunately industry infighting has reached a new high (or low 😞) in recent years, setting a poor example for new trainers and closing down the channels of communication.

The right gear can help you stay active, no matter the weather. Raincoats are not a fashion accessory. They are actually a very practical piece of gear, protecting your dog's coat from dirt, mud, and rain that would otherwise be tracked into your car and home. You'll be hard pressed to find a higher quality raincoat that protects your dog better than this Non-stop Dogwear Fjord raincoat.
Don't let the weather and the elements keep you from getting out and seeing things together with your best friend!
Remember, our entire site is 15% off through December 26th, and orders over $75 ship for free!
