English Setters are gentle, friendly, and great with children. They love attention and are very affectionate with humans. Despite their gentle manner, they are considered alert dogs since they bark to alert their family when in danger, but are able to relax if told. English Setters are energetic and require a lot of exercise, consisting of multiple brisk walks per day! This is why it is important to keep in mind the amount of time and energy you will need to put into their training and keeping them healthy. Additionally, they are pretty stubborn and love to jump on people when they are young, so consistent and efficient training will be required. They also tend to shed a lot, so frequent brushing and combing will be necessary.

A common suggestion is to socialize them as much as possible and expose them to new environments early on so that they are better off when reaching adulthood. As you can see in this photo English setters have long silky beautiful coats. These may look naturally beautiful, but these coats need to be maintained. To keep their coat up to par this breeds coat needs to be brushed carefully 1-2 times a week. Knots and irritation can occur if this breed is not brushed, which will lead to a nasty fur coat. English setters also require monthly trimming around the face to keep hair out of their eyes, and to keep them looking immaculate. The coat is not the only thing that needs to be maintained on this breed. The English setter needs their nails trimmed once a month, and a bath every 4-6 weeks to keep the coat healthy and clean. After reading this post it may seem that english setters require many grooming techniques keep them looking up to par, but they make good companions for people who are willing to keep up with their grooming needs. If these requirements are met by the owners, these dogs can live the happy and healthy lives they deserve!

Another couple interesting things about this breed was that it was first developed in the United States by C.N. Myers in the 1870’s and was finally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1884. Another fact about this breed was that it was originally called the setting spaniel because when hunting, the dog would lay down quietly, or “set”, when it found prey.

🐶 The English setter is one of the most beautiful breeds with a couple of fascinating features. This breed was originally bred as a sighthound to assist with game hunting so they have a natural instinct to pursue and follow their nose. However, after some training, these dogs will become very loyal. In addition, the breed has a white coat covered in small spots of blue,black, orange or even a tri-colored mix. There are no unacceptable spot colors as long as the base coat is a consistent white color. Furthermore, males weigh between 55 to 80 pounds and are about 25 inches, while females are between 45 to 70 pounds and are about 24 inches. The body of this breed has a standard size and the front legs will be skinny while the back legs will be slightly larger to create their powerful stride. Interestingly, the hips of the hind legs are typically slightly lower than those of the front which causes their powerful stride. 🐶

You may be wondering how English Setters have changed over time. They were originally called Setting Spaniels and are descended from Spanish Pointers. They are one of the oldest gun dog breeds which are hunting dogs that assist people in finding and retrieving game. An interesting fact about methods they used when hunting is stated in “English Setter History: The Making of One of the Oldest Gun Dog Breeds'' by American Kennel Club staff, which says “According to the English Setter Association of America (ESAA), the dogs of that period would help their hunter-masters by crouching down on their front legs to indicate the presence of birds. This is how the Setter was bred to lay down silently, or set.” English Setters used to be bred solely for hunting purposes, but they are now often bred for companion animal purposes.

Laverack wanted to breed a dog that was a better show dog, while Llewellyn wanted to breed a dog that performed better in the field.

The English Setter was originally created by crossbreeding the Springer Spaniel and the Spanish pointer to create the ideal setter dog. Edward Laverack bred an animal that was gentle and a good companion but did not compete as well in the field. Llewellyn crossbred this with other breeds to create a better field dog, making these dogs bigger and with a larger coat.

Although first bred by Laverack, there is some credit also given to R. Purcell Llewellyn who was able to develop the English setter. The two originators did differ, however, on why they bred the English setter. Laverack aimed to breed a better show dog whereas Llewellyn bred for a dog to have better performance in the field for game..
