The English Setter is a beautiful breed that’s perfect for families, even if you have other dogs! Initially bred for its function as a sighthound to assist with English bird hunting 500 years ago, this breed offers so much good to everyone. English Setters are recognized by all 3 major organizations (AKC,UKC, and FCI) as a sighthound and can be extremely useful to you if you are interested in hunting small game. 🦆🐶🦆🐶🦆

English Setters are gentle, friendly, and great with children. They love attention and are very affectionate with humans. Despite their gentle manner, they are considered alert dogs since they bark to alert their family when in danger, but are able to relax if told. English Setters are energetic and require a lot of exercise, consisting of multiple brisk walks per day! This is why it is important to keep in mind the amount of time and energy you will need to put into their training and keeping them healthy. Additionally, they are pretty stubborn and love to jump on people when they are young, so consistent and efficient training will be required. They also tend to shed a lot, so frequent brushing and combing will be necessary.

English Setters can be pretty independent due to their history of hunting, but they do need socialization just like any other dog. A common suggestion is to socialize them as much as possible and expose them to new environments early on so that they are better off when reaching adulthood. Increased socialization is advantageous in building their confidence around other people and eliminating the potential of aggression towards strangers or other animals.

Considering getting a English Setter?Here’s what you should know: potential owners should learn to pay extra attention to signs that might indicate the occurrence of such issues and be prepared in order to better deal with this situation. There are several tests that usually a responsible breeder would do. The four most used health tests include Hip evaluation, Thyroid evaluation, BAER testing, and Elbow evaluation. These tests listed by the AKC are mandatory and help ensure that the breed is in a healthy situation.

As you can see in this photo English setters have long silky beautiful coats. These may look naturally beautiful, but these coats need to be maintained. To keep their coat up to par this breeds coat needs to be brushed carefully 1-2 times a week. Knots and irritation can occur if this breed is not brushed, which will lead to a nasty fur coat. English setters also require monthly trimming around the face to keep hair out of their eyes, and to keep them looking immaculate. The coat is not the only thing that needs to be maintained on this breed. The English setter needs their nails trimmed once a month, and a bath every 4-6 weeks to keep the coat healthy and clean. After reading this post it may seem that english setters require many grooming techniques keep them looking up to par, but they make good companions for people who are willing to keep up with their grooming needs. If these requirements are met by the owners, these dogs can live the happy and healthy lives they deserve!
