Catching up with Aspen’s Favourite Lakes, 5 months old.
- Hattrick’s Family Reunion at Dutch Lake -
We’ve had Odin/Odie (previously Dutch) for a couple of months now and can’t imagine life without him. He has already doubled in size, and it seems like he grows as we’re watching him! Over twenty pounds at 17 weeks, we think he’ll be on the larger size for this breed.
Odin is an adorable, loving puppy who is more than happy to be a part of whatever you are doing (whether you like it or not!) but can also entertain himself with his stuffies, toys and chewies. Odie is one of the sweetest natured dogs ever. Not saying he can’t be a handful; he definitely can when it’s play time and you aren’t quite ready to play yet or he decides it’s time for the zoomies. It’s just hilarious watching him “zoom” around the back yard or the house at top speed for no apparent reason! He loves to help me garden, which usually looks like him undoing what I’m trying to do (e.g., helping to dig a hole where I just put a plant!).
We’re hoping Odin will go paddleboarding with my son when he is a bit older and we want him to be a kind friend to future rescue dogs, so we asked to have the calmest dog possible. We certainly got that in Odin. Odin was the most laid back of the litter and he is mostly calm and easy going - as long as you have regular play times and don’t leave him out of anything 😊 It’s pretty hard to leave him out of anything unless you literally put a door between him and you because he will always be in the middle of what you’re doing trying to make a game of it. However, you can do pretty much whatever you want with Odin without him getting irritated or anxious (e.g., he’s as comfortable lying on his back with feet up in the air as he is lying on his tummy; you can roll, flip, wrestle without him ever getting upset). Quite amazing, really.
Thank you to Hat Trick for doing so much of the socializing work for us. Odin is comfortable around loud noises, trucks, trains (they go behind our house), vacuums or people yelling. He sleeps through the night without waking us up. He is initially a bit reserved around other dogs and people he doesn’t know, but we’re fine with that. Once he knows you, you’re a friend for life and he will fetch, wrestle, and turn himself inside out play fighting with you over a toy. Afterwards, he’s happy to play on his own with his stuffies, chewies or paper bags! He just loves anything made of paper.
Odin also definitely has the toller smarts. He’s already learned several commands and constantly surprises us with his intelligence. I love how he sits and stares you in the eyes as if he’s trying to understand every word you say. I don’t think it will be long before he pretty much does 😊
We are so happy to have Odin in our lives. He is the best company ever!
