Recall work with Goldilocks unhinged and unedited!
Starting to give Teddy more freedom in the woods and in new environments he is doing amazing checking in and coming back to me on command.

Are you making this mistake when issuing a down (coucher) command?

Teddy’s Obedience Jumps Keeps Getting Better
#dogtraining #tribecanineco
Whether you buy or adopt a dog it is sososo important that we screen our new pet to match our lifestyle.
Most people don’t have the time and are too lazy to responsibly own pets. Just because it is trendy and you want a companion doesn’t mean you should get a dog.
Think of the dog, its genetics, its temperament, its behaviors if those are going to be a problem for you and you are not going to put in the time to properly address and work through then you probably shouldn’t get a dog!

Clicker or Verbal Marker?
What is Better?
For consistency and shaping I prefer a clicker. But for the general public in terms of hand-eye coordination and being able to quickly mark and reward behaviors I believe a verbal marker like “Yes” or “Good” to be better.

We are hammering a lot of neutrality work this past month. Especially to aid with Teddy’s allure to people and Jocko’s stubbornness in sticking with his commands.
In December we will push the limits of Jocko’s dog reactivity and both of the boy’s recalls in new environments.

Why dogs who lack confidence need reinforcement!
Dogs who are uneasy about every sounds and situation need guidance. They need someone who isn’t going to coddle them and let them make poor choices. They need a leader who is there to reinforce everything good they do.
Rocky’s uneasiness is going to take time. But with consistent reinforcement in new environments and giving him jobs to do like walking at a heel or offering eye contact we are going to start to see this fear recede and a more confident obedient dog start to take form.

What makes a great client is someone who can take ownership and understand that their dog’s actions are a direct reflection of how they have raised him/her.
The best people I have worked with listen to the advice I give and implement it consistently between sessions!
Consistency + Discipline = Results
I wish I had a before and after but Oakley has come so far from bounding after squirrels to walking in an above average loose heel. He still has some work to do but Im confident his owners can get him there.

Why we should be ignoring our dogs when we come home…
If your dog is all cracked out whenever you get home from work or running errands then the simple answer to your little tasmanian devil is to ignore them.
Go change out of your work clothes, get squared away, and then once your dog is calm, cool, and collected you can give it attention.
If we are constantly feeding into their crazy behavior and rewarding it with baby voices and play then how do you think they’ll act when grandma or the neighbors or your kids walk through the door?

Why I don’t approve of doggy greetings…
There are more bad things that can happen than good. Going up to someone random on the street and giving them a hug would end poorly 9/10 so why do we do it with our dogs?

Why you should be hand feeding your dogs!
•Increased Food Drive
•Increased Engagement
•Better Bond
By teaching your dogs that its favorite thing comes from you and not that silver platter we call a bowl. We are hammering into their minds that you are the single most important thing in their live’s.

Why I Love Leather & Biothane!
Ditch the crappy nylon and rope leashes/collars. Pick a more durable option that is going to last you 10x longer.
Biothane and leather are super easy to clean and maintain. They don’t fray, break, or smell and with collars made of these materials they are easy to adjust to the size of your dog.

Why you shouldn’t let your dogs outside unsupervised.
If you are not outside with your dog/dogs to correct the problem then how can you expect for the problem to go away?
… It won’t! By consistently being present and setting the right expectations for what is and isn’t allowed we will start to see those problems go away.

“Why We Place”
Too often do we give our dogs freedom they have not earned. As a result they are set up to make their own decisions without proper guidance.
By putting our dogs on a “place” command on a bed, mat, crate, etc. we are giving them structure to limit their poor choices and reward their good choices.
I.E. you choose to go on command to your place and refrain from begging, jumping, barking, you name it you get a big fat reward from me.
Start small and work your way up to extended periods of time!

1 year old Doodle Oakley doing some big things working in a distracted environment recalling and going to his place on command. Wouldn’t ever be possible without the patience and consistency of his handler.

Impulse control work next to the pool. One of Jocko’s let alone most dog’s biggest problems is they are not worked enough in different environments and challenged to withhold from engaging in specific behaviors.
Think of it like a shopaholic who can’t go to Target without buying at least one thing. Just as they need to learn to control and work through that impulse so do dogs in different capacities like jumping on people, camping the dinner table, or chasing various foreign objects.
As the boys slowly progress forward we hope to continue to show everyone that with consistency and hard work you can make your dog into the perfect pet you want it to be!

Walking basics!
- Start in a distraction free familiar environment for the dog.
- Be consistent in stopping when the dog gets out in front of you, when he comes back to you mark and reward.
- Reward for walking at your pace, changing direction with you, and offering eye contact.
- Don’t overwhelm your dogs in gametime situations go slow!

One of the biggest issues I see is dogs who disregard there owner’s and get locked in on trigger stimuli. Here is a great example of me testing Jocko with a squirrel in sight.

Reactive Dog 101:
- Have a great bond with your dog.
- Teach positive reinforcement with a clicker and food.
- Work on engagement from the ground up in incrementally distracting environments.
- Teach your dog that you are in control on the leash (pressure = punishment)
- Be consistent and patient Rome wasn’t built in one day and by no means will your reactive dog be fixed in an hour of work. Go slow and focus on reaching your dog before their triggers do. If a reaction does occur. Calmly remove your dog from the situation just like my client did, increase the distance a bit next repetition and reward/correct as need be!

Atlaz “Place” Training
From inside to outside we are slowly starting to scale the amount of stimuli that distract our beautiful Tribe member Atlaz.
We are working towards being able to stay in a “place” no matter the environment (soccer game, family cook-out, working in the garden).
Hard Work Pays Off
