Got to enjoy a couple hours at the fair this morning, checking out the animals, chatting with clients, and of course got some fair food! Sorry if we missed you, I was trying to keep an eye out for anyone I knew.

Good luck to all the kids at the Pickaway County Fair this week! I hope everyone stays cool and safe. Make sure your animals always have plenty of fresh water, wet them down if they seem too warm, and please alert someone ASAP if you are concerned about heat stroke in your animals.

Since it won't let me add this to my page without an address (I'm ambulatory only, no clinic), here are my hours:
Monday and Tuesday 9 am to 6 pm
Wednesday 1 pm to 6 pm
Saturday 9 am to 12 pm
Wednesday morning, Thursday and Friday I work at Stevelt Veterinary Clinic in Logan and am unavailable for emergencies unless you can bring the animal to the clinic.

Please plan ahead!

Well the little man is now 6 months old! And I just want to say a huge thank you to all of my wonderful clients! Thank you for your patience as I had to figure out how to keep running my single doctor business and continue to grow it while also taking care of a newborn and being perpetually sleep deprived. I finally feel like I have it figured out but I know there will probably still be hiccups in the road. So thank you to everyone who has supported me so far, and to any new clients, this face is why it sometimes takes me a couple days to return non-urgent calls.

Joel and Kovu would like to wish a very happy Easter to all my wonderful clients!

Don't get blocked!

We often get a call around 5 pm (or later 😆) about male goats who are in distress. A common cause of this is medically called urolithiasis, also known as a "blocked goat."
Urolithiasis obstruction is a blockage of the urethra prohibiting the voiding of the bladder.
These cases are emergencies!
There are many routes these cases can take, and that will depend on the animal, the length of time while blocked, the breed, age, and finances of the owner. Unfortunately, if we cannot relieve the obstruction, the long-term prognosis can be detrimental.
The most common risk factor for blocked male goats is feeding grain. The high content of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in grain allows for quick and easy urinary stone formation.
Grain is not needed for male goats, and in fact, most goats don't require grain. Avoid grain in male goats, your heartburn will thank you!

If you like to "feed grain" we suggest switching to timothy pellets instead of a typical goat feed. Otherwise, just grass hay and whatever brush they get into after escaping the fence!
Please peruse this figure from the May 2022 issue of JAVMA representing a decision tree for blocked goats in clinic.

We have had a few animals get exposed to poisonous plants lately. Watch out for these.

A great opportunity!
