For those of you who do or have bred cats, you know how special the stud cats are. They have the biggest impact on our breeding programs, since they can produce so many more kittens than the queens. They need special care and housing because they can be more aggressive from their hormones and mark their territory with really smelly urine. But they are also so big and beautiful, and we love them to death.

I am so grateful to Laury Hallaert for letting me have Tiamat. He is the sweetest boy, incredibly beautiful and produces really outstanding kittens. Many of his close relatives live year-round outside in large cat runs (this is very common in Europe), and he definitely has the outdoors in his blood. He is supremely happy when he gets to go outside. I took him out on his leash today while I picked figs. Initially he laid down in the sun, but quickly realized it was much too hot for that. He then moved under the apple tree, but he was still too hot, so found the perfect spot under the pomegranate tree. He did not want to leave to come inside with me. He is getting a screened in porch later this summer with pet safe screen, so he can enjoy the outdoors all day in a safe environment. I know he is going to love it!

The kittens love the cat wheels. I've been able to let them explore without as much supervision lately. They seem to be mostly figuring it out.

Last and definitely not least is my baby Kat. I'm so proud with how well she's done and how far she has come from her lowest weight of 63g. She has now caught up in size to all of her siblings and is fat and happy. She is also a beautiful amber color but she is a mackerel tabby unlike her sister Kay who is a classic tabby. That warm amber coloring is so beautiful and will continue to change as she grows.

Kay is just such a sweet girl. She loves to cuddle with me and give me kisses. She likes to be picked up and cuddled, as least for her current 30 second attention span. Her amber coloring is so beautiful already, I can't wait to see how it changes over time.

Kyle used to be the most timid of the group, but apparently that all changed this week. He is now into everything, climbing anything he can and he follows me around hoping I'll entertain him.

Kip is always on the move. He hasn't met a toy yet that he didn't like.

I am still totally in love with Kurt. He is the most into me of all of the kittens. Even if he doesn't stay long, he always comes by to check in with me and see how things are going.

Kiki is just so cute. She always looks like she has bed-head from her long fuzzy fur. She likes to sit in my lap and give me kisses on the rare occasions she can sit still.

The babies are now 7 weeks old! They are growing up so quickly!

I'll start with Ken. He is such a beautiful boy. He kept trying to catch whatever was moving on my ipad screen last night and eventually got tired and fell asleep in my lap.

I apologize for all of the out of focus pictures, but no one felt like pausing play time to pose for the camera. The gold crinkle ball was a huge hit with everyone!

Here are some group photos from yesterday. It is amazing the rate at which they develop at this age! Mommy Juni was finally willing to let me move them to where they have more space to move around. Yesterday morning they were all still pretty wobbly on their feet and trying to figure out how to walk. Today they are starting to hop/run and play with each other.

Our last kitten is Ken. He has such an interesting white pattern and the high white on his face. He is also a brown classic tabby and white. He's very easy going and the second biggest so far in the litter. I can't wait to see how he develops as he gets older.

This is Kip. He just wants to do his own thing and gets very annoyed at being picked up and weighed twice a day, but as soon as he's back in the nest, he's totally chill again. I love that his white goes all of the way up and around his back. I had really been hoping he was a black and white, but the tabby stripes have shown up on his forehead. So he is a brown classic tabby and white.

This is little Kat. She was the smallest one in the litter weighing only 72 g at birth. Two of her big brothers were 119 g at birth, so she started at quite a disadvantage. She and I have spent lots of time together doing syringe feedings and tube feedings. She finally broke 100 g today and I was so happy to see that. She has lots of opinions and likes to tell me about them! She is brown mackerel tabby and white and could be amber as well.

This little girl is Kay. She is just super sweet and a little bigger than her other sisters, so she's done well all on her own. She is a brown classic tabby and white, and maybe amber with her beautiful caramel colored fur around her face.

This little girl is Kiki. She was one of my two tiniest girls but she is such a fighter! I had to tube feed her once, but she refuses to otherwise take formula. She just finds ways to outsmart her bigger brothers to make sure she gets some milk from mommy too. I'm pretty sure she is a blue classic tabby and white, but again, amber? I know the pictures aren't great, but I'll still take guesses on her color!

Our first little one is Kurt. He is our big boy. He has been double or more of the weight of the girls almost from the beginning. He has solid legs and is always fat and happy! He's definitely a brown classic tabby and white, maybe amber? I welcome any and all guesses on the colors for this litter. Their mom is such a warm brown, that I may not know if they are amber until they are older and start changing colors.

Juniper had her babies yesterday. She delivered 7 babies in under 3 hours, so the poor girl is exhausted! She's been able to get some much needed rest today and the babies are all doing well. There are two very tiny ones, so I am watching them closely. Mamma is very protective, so it's hard to get good pictures, and I have no idea if they are boys or girls. Hopefully in the next week or so she will let me hold them more.

As I wait for Juniper to deliver her babies, I wanted to talk a bit about the amber color. Norwegian Forest Cats are the only cat breed that have amber cats. It comes from a spontaneous mutation in the MCR1 gene. This mutation has been traced back to a single cat, Klofterhagens Babuschka, born in Norway in 1981. If you trace the pedigree back in any cat who is or carries amber, you will find her. To me, one of the most fascinating things about amber is the color changes over time. The gene mutation causes the black or blue color in the cat's coat to be replaced by yellow. This accounts for the eventual warm amber color seen in these cats. You can see in these pictures what Aaron looked like as a baby and how his color changed as an adult. I am so excited at the prospect of having amber babies again and seeing how their beautiful coat changes over time!
