What you see on social media is usually the cute stuff... what you don't usually see is the hard work it takes to get to the cute stuff.
There's been an abundance of "I have to rehome my dog" posts lately... maybe it's my algorithm, maybe the amount of posts have increased, idk. I just know it's frustrating.
Wanna know what a day in the life of trying to incorporate a new dog or a growing puppy into the household looks like?
2 years after foster failing the guy in the bottom pic at 8 months old, here is my daily schedule:
Wake up, they each go out to potty seperately.
💥 if they don't go out seperately, Kane won't leave Loki alone and Loki won't potty. Kane will also run through his p**p.
After potty, they get their meds. Wait 30 min to feed breakfast.
💥have to wait 30 min for breakfast cause they also get pro/prebiotics and supplements that i don't want interfering with their meds.
💥They eat in their crates to prevent any issues
After loki is done is eating he goes for a walk. While loki is on his walk, kane is on tummy time for 30 min or else his stomach gets upset.... he has one mode until about 11am and that's turbo mode... doesn't mix well with a full stomach.
When Loki gets back from his walk he immediately gets a snuffle mat to help him calm down.
After kane has digested, time for him to go outside for potty and play time.
After kane comes back in, they get sniffing enrichment together for about 10 min.
🤪🤪
By this time it's only 9 or 9:30 am. I won't bore you with the rest of my day which consists of carefully crafted and scheduled supervised play time, licky mats in the afternoon, dinner, etc.
And I work from home and have 2 businesses to boot.
Moral of the story? You may not be able to give your dog everything you think they need, but give them what you can. And ffs, consider what's involved before you go adding a fur baby to your family. It's not easy and yes, it's WORK. Too many people are posting that they no longer have time or they can't give the dog what it needs, and trying to rehome right now is next to impossible. Shelters and rescues are beyond full and going broke daily.
💣💣💣And if you come on here and comment that I do too much for my dogs or question why I do so much cause "they're just dogs" be prepared to get verbally dragged. I do A LOT for my dogs and I know this. Not every one can, I get it and no judgment. But the point is I put in some work to make the dynamic work as best I can.
