Did you know that petting a dog lowers your blood pressure, reduces anxiety, and decreases cortisol levels while simultaneously increasing serotonin and dopamine.
That is a win-win!

Sharing this from a local veterinarian:
"As I start picking the first of the eating grapes this year, I wanted to send out my yearly reminder. DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG GRAPES. IT CAN CAUSE ACUTE FATAL KIDNEY FAILURE.

PLEASE SHARE so we can spread awareness. This toxicity is often unknown or forgotten about. "

Grapes were always a tricky "toxicity." Some dogs would eat lots and be fine, and others succumb to acute kidney failure after a single grape. Only in the last couple of years does the veterinary community think we have narrowed it down to the tartaric acid content in the grape being the culprit. This was discovered after many dogs developed kidney failure after ingesting a homemade play dough recipe that contained "cream of tartar," which is concentrated tartaric acid. How much tartaric acid is in a grape can vary by the type, weather, and soil conditions as it grows and the grape's age when picked. For example, grapes picked in a dry year have more acidity. Wine grapes traditionally have higher levels. Red grapes have more than green grapes.
Other working theories are that some grapes may have a microscopic mold on the skin, producing a mycotoxin to which dogs are very sensitive. This could also easily explain why there is such high variability in the "toxicity" level of grapes.
Regardless of the cause, all grapes, raisins, grape jellies, and jams should be considered potentially toxic. Dogs who eat grapes should be made to throw up as soon as possible. DCVS clients, we always recommend that our dog owners have a bottle of fresh, unopened hydrogen peroxide on hand. Fresh hydrogen peroxide dosed at 1 ml per pound of body weight (capping at 25 mls for larger dogs) should be given. If no vomit happens, the dose can be repeated 15 minutes later.

Ok...this is a post about cats and hair ties and hair bands. These pics I copied from a veterinary site. Yes, cats eat hair bands. This also happened at the clinic I worked for. I don't know how someone cannot notice when 20+ hair bands go missing. Although, the cat didn't eat all these in one sitting, this happened over weeks until he started vomiting. This probably cost the owner thousands of dollars, and it could happen to dogs also. This is your education for the day!

Hotspots. I am seeing a lot of posts about hotspots. Hotspots are a moist dermatitis that can spread rapidly and can be extremely painful. There may be a genetic component, so always ask your breeder if there is a history of allergies! Be your own advocate! If you think paying $2-3 thousand dollars is an expensive puppy, wait til you purchase an $800 puppy who is prone to allergies and or hotspots. Your $800 puppy will now be costing you $800 or more to treat that hot spot and/or allergies every single time! Dermatological issues are very very expensive!
You may need to purchase special food $$, allergy meds $$, antibiotics$$, hospitalization$$, and think of that poor dog!
Heat, humidity, and pools can also contribute to hotspots.
While there is never a gaurantee that your pup will never get a hot spot or allergies, always ask you breeder the history of the parents. This is the same in regards to hips, elbows, heart, eyes, patellas, etc. The more things the breeder tests for, the better your chance for a healthy dog. I have 25 years of Veterinary Technician experience, I have seen this time and time again.

I copied this from another site:
"Does anyone have any tips about how to help your puppy be less afraid of stairs? We just got a 6 month old golden retriever and she is so scared of going up or down the stairs and won’t do it however if we leave her up or down the stairs when we have to go up or down them she cries for us so we are having to carry her at the moment."

Here at Iron Rose Retrievers, all of our puppies are exposed to steps as well as many other of life's experiences. These experiences give the puppy confidence and courage to overcome new experiences. Sometimes, you do get what you pay for. Our price point may not be for everyone, but how we raise our puppies IS appreciated by those who choose our puppies! While we cannot account for every life experience your puppy may encounter, we do expose them to more than the average breeder. This is one of the many reasons our families come back to us for their 2nd and 3rd puppy!
Puppies are due this week and we do have some reservation spots available.
