Farming for 10yrs in my backyard!
Seen a lot of death but experienced more life from chicks, kits to Angora kids. May 2025 be a year of many firsts from the city stead from spinning fiber, Nigerian dwarf kids, milk collection, cheese making and selling products!

TELL ME YOUR GO-TO BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT......

When looking through my library of 200 + homesteading, gardening and cooking books, I realized I didn't have any on processing all your animals or specifically on preserving their meat. Almost all of them touch on dispatching and some canning however I'm going to need to know how to preserve the meat. I'm also going to need extensive detail on butchering and cutting up the meat.

I'm glad I have such a good loving dog. Although she is always sweet, she is still a puppy and loves to play so I'd never leave her alone with the smaller animals.

Well, a lot of projects going on over here and I'll share each one as I finish them but for now.….
But first🤭, my very first gate build 98% complete. Just need to install the handle and locking mechanism. It's cheaper to buy silver hardware but I had some spray paint left over from another project so, I still got the black hardware I wanted.
Aside from the hardware this gate was built from scraps!!

This gate goes to the new chicken run, which is currently being fenced in and also another first for me, building fences!

What do you think?

I have so many things left to do but I am chipping away. Moving this thing by myself so much trying to figure out the best spot for it has caused a gap between the floor and the sidewall but I can't seem to get back down. So I will just have to wrap it with weatherproofing tape before painting.

I have new permanent water and feeder coming. I will need to brace the outer wall with wood bracing to hold the water and feeder and nest boxes before installing them.

I intend to paint the chicken coop classic black and white. I am waiting on an automatic solar coop door & solar exhaust fans as this double corrugated plastic shed house gets really hot.

I plan to brick in the wood pallet for an aesthetically pleasing little porch, simply to make my heart Happy. I have cute artwork and vintage solar lights that I'm waiting to put up when everything else is finished. I absolutely cannot wait.

And I am keeping my eye open for some small windows that I can place in here for the summer time.

Due to living in a neighborhood in which none of this privacy fencing belongs to our property and recent tornadoes have taken down some of that fencing temporarily, I am putting up my own permanent fencing so that if that happens again my animals will still be safe.

This is just what I still have left for the chicken coop and run lmbo🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ then I will be proceeding to the rabbit pen and playard and then on to the goats. All while working on the children's playground equipment as well. I need the no rain season of The Summer but I need the cool air of the 🍂 fall 🤗🤗

Why would anyone ever need to put a bulking agent in potatoes!?!

So if you ever have to p**p after eating the rectangular hash browns from Walmart now you know.
They fill it with laxatives as a filler, a bulking agent, to use less potatoes.
Which makes no sense because potatoes are so darn cheap. They're hash browns are literally oil and this bulking gel like agent.

⚠️ 🛑 But it's also a carcinogen and in the amounts used in processed foods, it can contribute to colorectal cancer!!

Cumin is now called Lefty, as he's going on to a new farm since Gabriella gave us a boy.

ARE YOU A RESTAURANT STYLE RANCH OR MORE OF A BOTTLE BRAND SUPERMARKET RANCH?

Homemade Ranch Seasoning
1/3 C powdered milk ( I used goat's milk but you can use regular milk or buttermilk or a mix of the options)
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
2 teaspoons dried parsley
1 and 1/2 tsp dried dill
1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons dried chives
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/2 a teaspoon of sugar
1/2 a teaspoon of dried tarragon (optional)
1/4 tsp cracked black pepper
1/4 tsp mustard powder

I doubled this recipe that's why it's so much in the jar.
Add two tablespoons of this mixture with 1/2 C mayonnaise and a 1/2 C of sour cream. Whisk until blended very thoroughly or shake in a blender cup. This is where I will add milk until it's the consistency that I like my Ranch. I will also squeeze in a little bit of lemon juice.

Trying to finish up my berry patch.
I didn't like the towers, no matter what I couldn't get them level and that was unsafe for me running a farmhouse preschool program here.

I opted for unstacking and creating a front yard berry 🍓 patch.
This is just half. The other half behind me will be wood raised beds, still building to spec, and 🫐 blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, currants and gooseberries.

I woke up sore head to toe, so today has been slow, moving all the rock but I'm still going.

The house smells so good right now. I just fixed local smoked ham and bacon jowl for my dogs.
Normally I give them the meat raw but this meat was from a freezer that had been left open and the meat had gotten down to right at 40°.
Where I wouldn't trust it for my family, dog stomachs are much stronger and I went ahead and cooked it for them. But they have been eating off of this pig and cow for the last year.

I mixed in some raw backyard eggs, sea kelp, nutritional yeast, flaxseed, fish protein powder, and an organic nutritional supplement multivitamin for dogs.
To say they are loved is an understatement 🤣🩵💙💕

Turned some kids garden beds I bought on clearance last year for $25 into temporary brooders.
I now have 6 Cornish cross. Never raised these and wanted to try my hand at it before buying bulk. In 8+ weeks I'll process them.
I got 3 Blue legged beauties & 3 California whites to round out my daily 🥚 🧺.

Can't wait to start getting milk! One less thing to buy.
Can't wait to try making butter, yogurt and cheeses.
If the babies don't sell, they'll just be used to feed my family.

What a precious 🫢💞 surprise! I couldn't be more thrilled. Gabby's super sweet with her baby and very protective but not at all aggressive. I haven't gotten a chance to pick it up and see whether I've got a buck or Doe so place your bets now lol. What do you think it is?

Spent 4 days straight working on this over 70' long berry patch. Now I have to wait till payday lol to finish buying rock, edging boards and time to finish. Some neighbors asked if I was worried passerbys would help themselves. I didn't think about it but, if they are kids I hope they do. If they are adults I'll catch them on my cameras and I'll send them a grocery invoice lol. ( Joking) I don't believe people will and if they do, I hope it's just, you know, a handful /taste as they walk by. That thought doesn't bother me at all. I think it would make me happy , make me smile. WHAT ARE YOUR 💭 THOUGHTS 🧐?

Caught this bee building himself a pollen sweater😆 I love watching the bees in the yard. If you drive by my house, it's not the typical manicured neighborhood lawn and I'm proud of that. This☝️ is why .

I still do not have the Bunny run complete. So this is how they get grass time and stretch their legs. They are getting fluffy again so adorable. WHO ELSE HAS RABBITS? MEAT OR FIBER¿?

Huge THANKS & lots OF LOVE ❤️ to my oldest @austin_gottula_15 & his girlfriend(Natalie). After getting the shed moved(by myself) from the right of the house to that big dead spot you see in the video, I couldn't get it up the hill and around the corner to the platform by myself. Now I can cut the front overhang off, build shelving inside, and start moving all the things I took out of the blue shed into the new shed. (Turned the blue shed into goat & milking area) I love my son. He's always been willing to come when I call. He helps me out, so I know he loves me. When I see him, I'm reminded I've done something right, even though as mothers we always feel, we could've done more. I hope being out in this terrible world on his own doesn't make him hard. I hope he always remains kind and keeps that big ❤️ 🤗.

Here at Big K Citystead, I am moving from store bought commercial cleaning to all natural homemade versions. A simple, honest, and peaceful life starts with mental & emotional health. 1. If you're missing someone, let them know. 2. If you really need to be near someone, send them an invitation to get together. 3. If you want someone to understand you, be sure to explain well. 4.
