🐾 Why is your cat scratching?
Find out on episode 041 of #yourvetwantsyoutoknow 🐱✨ 🔍
Here are some fascinating facts we cover:
1️⃣ Scratching is a natural, species-specific behavior for cats. Even declawed cats will still try to scratch due to their instinctual drive.
2️⃣ Declawing isn't just a nail trim—it's a painful procedure that affects a cat's mobility and often leads to more severe behavioral issues, such as inappropriate elimination and excessive biting.
3️⃣ There are humane and effective alternatives to declawing!
From nail caps to providing a variety of scratching posts, we discuss several methods to keep both your furniture and your feline happy.
🎙️ Join Dr. Lancellotti and Dr. Stair as they dive deep into how to manage and redirect your cat's scratching behavior, ensuring a happier home for both you and your furry friend.

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month! This time of year can be particularly challenging for pets with allergic skin disease. Dr. Shannon Cabell, Consumer Medical Lead for Dermatology at Zoetis, joins us to discuss frequent reasons for itching, how common allergies are among dogs in the United States, and the importance of discussing your pet with your veterinarian in order to successfully relieve their itch.
This podcast episode was sponsored by Zoetis. Zoetis is dedicated to changing the way we approach canine pruritus to protect the bonds between the pet, the owner and the veterinary team.
Itchingforhelp.com offers more information to help pet owners understand their dog’s itch, learn what clinical signs indicate itch is a problem that needs veterinary treatment, review available treatment options, listen to common questions answered by two great veterinarians, and hear first-hand stories from pet owners about their own itchy dogs.

There are many reasons for pets to scratch, lick, chew, and itch.
Allergies are common and can be caused by fleas or other insects, proteins in the food, or environmental triggers like pollens or dust mites.
Itchy pets should be on a flea preventative. An elimination diet trial should be done under the supervision of a veterinarian because there are no blood, hair or saliva tests that can accurately diagnose a food allergy. Environmental allergies can be reversed with immunotherapy so other medications like steroids, Apoquel, Cytopoint and Atopica can be reduced.
But allergies are not the only thing that can cause pets to itch! Infections with mites, bacteria, and yeast can look similar to allergies. Hormonal diseases like hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease can cause secondary infections that make dogs very itchy.
The bottom line is, if you have an itchy pet, get to your veterinarian to figure out what is going on. On the way there, listen to the Your Vet Wants You to Know podcast for more information.

What’s that smell? Dogs and cats with allergies or hormonal diseases can often develop infections on their skin with bacteria and yeast. These infections can cause itching, redness, scabs, and discomfort. In this episode, #veterinarydermatologist Dr. Alicia Webb-Milum joins follow dermatologist Dr. Brittany Lancellotti to talk about why skin infections occur and the types of bacteria and yeast most often involved with the infection. They will also discuss how topical therapy, such as medicated bathing, can be an excellent treatment, and what to discuss with your #veterinarian if you are having difficulty with topical therapy.

What are you using to treat your pet’s arthritis?
Just like people, pets can develop arthritis following injury or age-related changes. Arthritis in dogs and cats can cause discomfort and pain, slowing an animal down, making them seem older and less able to enjoy their favorite activities. In this episode, veterinarian and Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner, Dr. Jennifer Fletcher, discusses how to recognize signs of arthritis in dogs and cats, how your veterinarian might diagnose arthritis, and what treatment options are available.
