In case you need this today…

Maybe loving our dog is what helps us love ourselves.

Maybe setting boundaries with our dog helps us set boundaries with ourselves and others.

Maybe practicing calm with our dog helps us practice calm with ourselves.

Maybe building our dog’s confidence helps us build our own.

Maybe teaching our dog to heal, helps us heal.

I know for me, three of the biggest lessons I have learned from dog training is that it’s helped me build my confidence and helped me be extremely self aware and mindful.

What I wish I knew about dog training sooner - these are some truth bombs that I wish I had known sooner.

1. Your mental health GREATLY impacts your relationship with your dog. And I cannot emphasize enough to start your day caring for YOU first. Meditate, drink water, nourish yourself, journal, whatever it is..to care for YOU before tending to your dog. You’re going to be a better owner.

2. You don’t have to obsessively train your dog every single day. The most helpful training is not going to be formal training sessions, it’s going to be all the in between moments during your day. EVERY interaction with your dog is a training moment - be intentional with your time and what information you’re feeding your dog.

3. There’s no one right formula to train a dog. And thinking there is, is just your perfectionism and control issues showing. What works is based on you, your dog and your lifestyle.

4. There will ALWAYS be people who criticize the way you train your dog. Friends, family, internet trollers, strangers. Train them the way that works best for you and your dog.

5. There’s ALWAYS going to be uneducated dog owners out there who impact you and your dog. The owner who can’t recall their off-leash dog, the neighbor whose reactive dog goes nuts at you, etc. You have to learn how to handle those situations in a calm and confident way.

6. Most people don’t actually understand dog behavior and misinterpret it constantly. This is the cause for so many problematic dog behaviours. The dog park is a prime example, everyone thinks their dog is soooooo excited to go to the dog park whereas most dogs are stressed the hell out there.

7. Always think through the worst case scenario. I kind of hate this one, but it’s saved me from a lot of potential problems! I always opt for the LOWEST risk option. For example, I wait quite awhile before I introduce my dogs to any training dogs in our home. Sometimes I don’t ever introduce them. We’ve never had an issue but I always assume that a dog fight could happen at any given moment. I am constantly looking for all outcomes and how I’d handle it IF it happens when I am dealing with dogs.

What do you wish you learned sooner?

Reminder!!!

You’re not a bad dog owner if you feel resentment towards your dog. You’re not a bad dog owner if you wish your dog “wasn’t like this”. You are not a bad dog owner if you grieve the life you thought you’d have with your dog.

Have you ever had these thoughts and felt extremely guilty for them? Remember, these emotions don’t define your worth or capability as a dog owner. They actually highlight your deep care and commitment.

You’re not a bad dog owner if you feel resentment towards your dog. It’s natural to have moments of frustration and disappointment, especially when things aren’t going as you hoped.

You’re not a bad dog owner if you wish your dog wasn’t like this. It’s okay to have these thoughts; it doesn’t mean you love your dog any less. It means you’re human and dealing with a challenging situation.

You’re not a bad dog owner if you grieve the life you thought you would have with your dog. Mourning the loss of your expectations is a normal and healthy part of coping with reality. It’s important to allow yourself to feel this grief without guilt.

The first step towards a better relationship with your dog is acknowledging that your feelings are valid and that all of them belong. By recognizing and accepting your feelings, you can begin to navigate them with compassion and move towards a more fulfilling bond with your dog.

At the end of the day, being a great dog owner isn’t about having perfect emotions or never struggling. It’s about showing up every day, doing your best and being willing to grow alongside your dog.

I see you, I feel you and I am here to remind you that YOU ARE NOT A BAD DOG OWNER! ❤️

June dog training challenge - 14 days
Challenge runs from June 1 - 14

10, 20, 30

10 minutes daily to focus on mindful practices for yourself! This can look like mediation, journaling, setting intentions, yoga, sitting in silence with a tea, etc. Taking time for yourself daily and practicing mindful behaviours/activities will allow you to show up as the best owner possible for your dog.

20 minutes daily of place duration! This is all about your dog staying on place and practicing the art of doing nothing. It’s challenging for the dogs - and that’s the point. When we work on programming your dog’s “off switch” - this is where we start to see the magic happen.

30 minute daily walk! I want you to get at least one 30 minute walk in with your dog. It’s easy to get caught up in playing fetch and or let roam around the yard. I want you to shift and intentionally go for a walk each day. If you exceed 30 minutes, even better!

These 3 challenges combined into your daily routine will completely shift your dynamic, your mindset and behaviours of your dog! You’ll thank me when the 14 days are over and more importantly after seeing the benefits, you will continues these practices.

Rules:
1. Complete all 3 challenges daily between June 1 to June 14
2. Each day be sure to capture these practices and post a photo tagging .dogtraining
3. Happy Paws will be tracking everyone that is participating in the challenge

Day train bootcamp is a small group custom intensive training program that allows us to efficiently do the “heavy lifting” of laying the foundational work for your training goals. Training goals can be absolutely anything (i.e – leash reactivity, basic obedience, public manners, walks, calm state of mind training, getting in and out of the car, recall, etc) as we make a custom program for you and your dog. Small groups give us instant exposure to other dogs, which allows us to effectively tackle goals like:
-Over arousal/excitement
-Reactivity
-Calm co-existence around other dogs
-Focused training around other dogs
*Depending on your goals, we may include social play or field trips to public spaces/stores.

You will be supported on your training journey through training notes and videos.

*This program is NOT suitable for aggressive dogs.

Please note: we may recommend multiple day sessions based off your training goals, it is your decision to follow our program length recommendations

PETs Private Sessions
Reiki, communication, past life regression and integrated energy therapy for animals

Saturday, June 15
45 minute session: $111 plus HST
Location: 675516 Hurontario St, Mono

As spiritual beings, Christine from The Fern & The Fox believes that animals can benefit from many of the same energetic healing methods as humans. Through my many years of training and practice, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible connection that forms between people and pets. It is through this experience that I developed a signature service unique to The Fern and The Fox: Personal Energetic Techniques (PETs) for Animals.

What is PETs for animals?
PETs for Animals applies personal energetic techniques such as reiki, communication, past life regression and integrated energy therapy on animals of all kinds: dogs, cats, horses, etc.

Who is PETs for animals appropriate for?
Owners who are interested in building a stronger connection between person and pet are ideal candidates for PETs for Animals. PETs is also appropriate for animals who are suffering any kind of pain, anxiety, stress or illness. If your animal suffers from any of the following, PETs may offer a solution:

-Displaying anxious behaviour
-Has suffered past trauma
-Has been repeatedly rehomed
-Suffering from a physical ailment (ex. digestive issues; breathing difficulties, etc.)
-Diagnosed with disease (ex. cancer)

What are the benefits of PETs for animals?
The goal of PETs is to have the animal return to balance and alignment. They may be calmer, less anxious, less stressed and in less pain and discomfort. Owners will receive practical guidance and tools to provide their animals with ongoing support.

Available sessions:
June 15:
10:30am
12pm

What’s the biggest secret to having a deeper bond with your dog?

DO MORE OF WHAT THEY LOVE WITH THEM!!

That’s it, that’s all. It’s really that simple! Facilitate doing something they love, together and BE PRESENT. ❤️

Atlas is happiest when he is freely exploring hiking trails, so I do my best to get him on a trail 2-3 times a week. I ensure to be present, focused in the moment and engage with him during our adventures.

So if you’re looking to start building a bond, or deepening your bond, start here.
