EDN Team Tango rocking their NW1 container search. Really proud of the work this team has put in- check this young, high drive dog work her first trial (other than ORT) with confidence, precision, focus and drive. And her handler for lovely handling and calls. Oh, and odor obedience for days!!!!! This is what training to fluency before test day looks like- easy. 😍🥹🔥💚
ALERT! New EDN skill challenge! "On Second Thought" Hide. Post a video in the comments for a chance to win a $20 gift card to K9 Nosework Source! Winner will be announced next Sunday, June 23!
It's likely the last cooler morning for a while so we got out and trained. Check out Brennan SMTx5 working my favorite hide of the day.
This is a great example of an atypical hide placement + thermals that created a deceptive sourcing challenge. Brennan has found likely hundreds of hides on the bottems/seats of chairs/tables/benches. I set the hide in the base of the seat on the ground, in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight causes the odor to rise and collect under the seat of the chair and throughout the tables. Brennan had to override his expectation of hide placement and work through the rising odor by using his nose to fully source down to the hide. Fun training hide!
This is how we create tenacious sourcing and maintain our criteria! Regardless of the dog's level of experience, we have to maintain this throughout their career!
This weekend, we challenge you to go set an "on second thought" hide. Pick an object that your dog is used to searching. Benches, picnic tables, chairs, etc are great for this. Think of where you would normally put it. Now, pick somewhere else on or near the object to put your hide! Run your dog, mark and reward the moment they are at source, have a party! Share your video in the comments! Happy hunting 🥰
That feeling when your hide works exactly like you wanted it to 🥰😎 Go Team June Bug!!
Here's a fun illustration of the swirling that happens to odor in an alcove with wind. I saw this dancing leaf in an alcove at work the other day when it was really windy and I immediately thought about nosework and odor and couldn't not get a quick video, lol. Odor = air, so picture your odor as the dancing leaf!
Here's the video response to yesterday's scent theory game! Listen with sound for the commentary and to watch Brennan SMTx4 work these hides. This is a very experienced dog so that is part of why he is so efficient with this set up, but he has very demonstrative changes of behavior that help us see what odor is doing. When we talk about dogs showing us their world and what the odor is doing, this is what we mean! Their body language and searching tells us the story!
As shown in the video, these hides did indeed converge. Remember, proximity of the hides alone does not indicate convergence, but rather what the enviornment is doing with that odor to make the scent cones mix, or not.
The other thing to realize with this is how physically far from the hides Brennan needed to go to work out the problem. Holding them in an area you think the odor is most available may actually restrict them from getting the necessary information and ultimately take more time for them to solve the problem than if they had been allowed the room!
You can play this yourself. When you set hides, think about where that odor is going to go. Make a prediction. Write it down, record a video "I think the odor is going to go here". Then run your dog and see what they tell you. It is a great way to keep developing these skills. The learning never ends!
Thank you for the great engagement! I'm a big nerd and love this stuff- I hope this was fun! If you liked this and would like to see more content like this, let me know and I'll try to make this a more regular thing so we can all talk about functional scent theory together!
Team Oliver absolutely rocking tonight's non-object wall hide. Non-object hides build sourcing foundations and push hide placement expectations. We love this amazing pug team!
Enjoy a highlight reel of some of our favorite sniffing shorties at tonight's beginner class: Baron, Remmy, Miki, and Stormy. These kids are starting to rock containers! Nosework is for every dog, including the little ones!!!
Final intro class of the session- here's a highlight reel of a few of the teams working a hide that challenged their hide biases. We've had everything from Chihuahuas to Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs in this group and they've all taught us and grown so much, especially that what we most believe is true- nosework is for EVERY dog!!! We're honored to be a part of their journey learning this amazing game that is enriching their lives and relationships. Watch out world- a new crew of EDN teams are coming 🧡
Intro to nosework class #5- continuing to fade the visual and transitioning to the tin. Love seeing changes of behavior happening!
Check out these mighty hunters 😍🧡🔥
Huge congrats to our teams who got out to the ORT in Lansing with Canine Coaches! We're so proud of you for stepping to the line! Enjoy Team Doris who knocked it out of the park, coming back to nail that last odor after getting 2/3 their first try at an ORT last spring. Getting a "no" at an ORT can be deflating and disappointing- but I know in my case and in my students, when you recover, learn from it and put in the work, the lesson and the training pay off in spades. Look at them! Look at that training! Look out world, this amazing Doberman team is coming! Way to go, Team Doris, and all of our EDN teams 🙌🔥🐾
Super fun intro night! I LOVE week#4 of class- the pieces are starting to click into place! So excited for these teams and the fun we will have together, and how nosework is enriching their relationships and lives!!! Some of these dogs couldn't take food in this building their first class. WOW 😍😘
Awesome night! Proud of these pups. These dog have never seen intentional distractors before. Spend time making odor very important. Teach distractors as discrimination. This, not that. Absolute rock stars!
*sound on for maximum learning*
Team Chief rocking their one and only hide in the unknown search area. Time to hide: 30 seconds. Time called finished- 3 minutes. Today's lesson- if your dog found the first hide in 30 seconds, it will likely not take them another 2.5 minutes to find another! This is NORMAL development. We ALL stay in areas a long time when we first practice unknowns. They did great!
Team Chief is preparing for NW1 and have been on odor for a little over a year. Tonight was the first time they saw an unknown number of hides. We like starting the conversation long before they see it in competition. Unknown numbers feel scary when we are new. But once you learn to read all of what your dog is telling you (in odor, diffuse odor and out of odor) the whole game changes and the real dance begins. We love starting this part of creating a nosework team!
SUPER PROUD of EDN Team Thor! They started with our intro to nosework class in July. Thor is Viki's third nosework dog, so he's got a leg up, but still, amazing! This weekend they competed in his first AKC Scent Work trial and earned his novice buried and container titles. Thor is just a baby- he's just starting what's looking like a pretty amazing career!
Fun advanced classes tonight at Bass Pro Shop! We did a blank interior and exterior, a single hide NW3 parameter search, a large unknown # elite style exterior with 4 hides, and this cool mixed element search that challenged the dogs sourcing. The wind was blowing mostly from the front of the car to the back. We had a hide in a box at the front of the car blowing onto the car, and a tire hide blowing onto a blank container. Dogs had to trust their noses and not their assumptions. Here's Team Kim and Gemma rocking it but all of the dogs worked it like pros! Great work teams!
Great intermediate training night at Bass Pro Shops! These dogs are getting so much more confident and focused searching in new locations! Check out Team Chief rocking a blind search! The pieces are coming together 😎🐾🙌
Fun advanced night working with some super teams! Check out EDN team Dan and Tre rock this elevated hide on a trailer! Taking the most direct path to odor 😎😁🙌 Good girl!!!!
Foundations Class 8/9/22
Fun night of foundations class training at a new park! These dogs have never searched here and did great!! We worked on start line routines and games that allowed for distance from the dog to lead out from the start line to find odor independent of their person. Our teams rocked it! 🙌
Intro to Nosework Week #4 Summer 2022
Week #4 highlight reel! Having so much fun with these great Every Dog Nosework teams!!
