Caring for animals and their people is extremely rewarding but can often involve burnout, depression, financial concerns, compassion fatigue, bullying and public perceptions.
In animal care profession, veterinarians and animal care workers have some of the highest su***de rates - internationally. But mental health carries a huge stigma. There is also an immense lack of awareness, resources and support for mental health struggles. Mental health is equally as important as physical health - it just can’t be seen.
Covid has made seeing a vet more challenging, for pet guardians and vet staff and created struggles for all of us. But, when talking to your vet and their staff, take a moment and be kind m, you don’t know what they’ve gone through that day.
What type of dog water bowl do you use? 🐶💧
The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.
So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!
In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!
Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🥣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nose👃🏼 and adjacent areas with pink blotches.
So stainless steel🍴 bowls are the safest, right?
Well not so fast…. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowls😫. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled “Toxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🚫 that won’t leach contaminants over time. The Forever Dog is available now for pre-order, worldwide, check out the www.ForeverDog.com/about
There’s dog out there that need a lot of exercise then some dogs do. Please walk your dogs when it’s not hot outside.
With the warm weather arriving be sure to keep your pet safe during the excessive heat. Make sure your pet has plenty of cool water and limit walks to the early morning or evening hours. Wondering if the sidewalk is to hot for your dog's paws? Are you able to keep your bare hand on the pavement for 10 seconds? If not, it's probably too hot for your dog! Here are some other helpful heat-related tips from our friends at Dog Services.

Please don’t do the don’t because you’re breaking your bound with your dog and not building up the relationship with your dog
We humans love to simplify things. Always categorizing, labeling, searching for fixed formula’s, theories, rules, laws, systems.
It is understandable, because the predictability and explanations we try to provide ourselves with, will make us feel more in control.
Though it can be helpful and valuable, we must never forget that when working with humans and dogs, we are working with complex mammals. Unique individuals.
Some scientists call emotions ‘systems’. This can be very helpful in understanding functionality, but in reality emotions are not fixed systems, but complex neurological networks within the brain. Not universal, but individual. Though many mind blowing similarities in brain and behaviour of all mammals have been discovered and proven, emotional arousal can arise in countless variaties and in many different intensities within each individual brain.
Some biologists analyze and categorize the behaviour of wild social animals living in family groups using dominance theory. This may be helpful in order for biologists to predict behaviour outcomes around scarce resources, but I reckon survival and individual needs are far more likely to drive the behaviour of animals than (in my humble opinion, strongly humanized) social systems.
Many animal trainers analyze and categorize behaviour outcomes using behaviorism laws and theories. This can be very helpful and valuable, especially during training, but not all behaviour is learned through interactions with the environment. Not all behaviour is functional and not all behaviour is driven by consequences.
After years of studying, years of practical experience and spending a fortune on gaining knowledge and still I keep learning and evolving which I hope and expect to never stop.
I can only come to one conclusion: understanding and influencing behaviour can be complex.
So many influences, so many factors, so many variaties, it can be quite a puzzle!
We are all unique, individual, complex mammals.
I find it fascinating.🤓

🐾TIP🐾 NEVER leave your pet in a HOT CAR! Pass it on!
It’s that time of year where people are starting to get outside and walk there dogs. It’s best to walk your dog early in the morning and early in the evening. Where it’s cool out.
Ouch it's HOT🐾🐾🐾🐾 Pass it on..
