The fourth of July is a little under one month away, but NOW is the time to contact your veterinarian about medication options for fireworks to help ease the anxiety some of our furbabies exhibit during this time of year.
This week is National Pet Appreciation week and we couldn't adore this trio more! Give your furbabies some extra lovin' this week.
If you enjoy being judged by a little furry sociopath that rules your home and manages to look impossibly cute while doing so, then you should know.. June is ADOPT-A-CAT month!
Happy Memorial Day!
Please remember we are closed today but will be back tomorrow at 9 a.m. If your pet is experiencing a medical emergency, please contact Premier Vet Group in Orland (708-388-3771) or Animal Emergency of Mokena (708-326-4800).

The Buzz on Cicadas: Some pets may start digging as they hear cicadas emerging from the ground and are curious what the buzz is about. Ingesting a cicada or two is ok. If you have many cicadas in your yard, then you will want to discourage your pet from ingesting large amounts as it can make them sick. Teach or use the leave it command and offer them something more delicious in exchange.
It always nice to have a helper in the garden! Brittany helping to water the plants 🌱💧🐶 swipe to see her in action! 🐾🐾

Cheers to all of the pet parents out there! 👏

Reese is Dr. Debbie’s 17 year old puggle and she had her routine teeth cleaning last Tuesday! Who gets a 17 year old dog’s teeth cleaned?!?! Maybe it seems silly to some of you but read this through and you might just change your mind.
Reese had a mild amount of tartar on her teeth and had her last dental cleaning when she was 15 years old. Looking at her teeth, it would seem like she just needed a good clean and polish. However, it was found that she had painful resorptive dental lesions that were identified under anesthesia when they could properly be probed and X-rays taken.
Without that routine cleaning (that actually turned out to be very necessary), Reese’s appetite would have probably be so-so or she would have become picky and her activity would have declined as a result of the undiagnosed pain, all of which would probably be attributed to old age.
Was it scary to have the old girl’s teeth cleaned? Absolutely, it’s normal to be worried when a loved one has a procedure done and it was no different for Dr. Debbie and her family.
Was it worth the risk of anesthesia? For them, yes. They decided as a family that they wanted to give Reese every opportunity to live a long, healthy life. This opportunity was one they could have easily said, “naw she is too old and her teeth don’t look too bad”. Since they did not, they are thankful because they were able to identify and address something that was unknowingly causing her pain.
Could it have ended differently? Absolutely, but that could have been the case regardless of her age or procedure. There is always a certain level of risk with anesthesia. Complications exist, but they knew that at the end of the day they could say they gave her every opportunity to lead a long, healthy life. With whatever time she has left, she will be comfortable.
Reese recovered well from her procedure and had several extractions. She is back to barking for treats and being her usual spunky self.
A dental cleaning may not be appropriate for every elderly pet but you should consult with your vet to see if it’s an option to consider. It may just give you some more time with your bestie! ♥️
