Emily sent me this little clip of Ted from Poppy’s last litter, he’s in the garden with a chew and a neighbour’s cockerpoo popped round to share. These two are great friends and Lilla has found ways to visit Ted and they enjoy each other’s company.
Emily and I messaged back and forth quite a bit discussing the benefits of raw food and how she’s convinced that Ted has really benefited, and I don’t think anyone could argue with that, he looks absolutely the picture of health, that gleaming glorious coat!
Further to my earlier post I was prepping swede this morning, the dogs are all attention, here they are munching on swede peelings, not too many of these methinks, (could be a bit windy!) but why not? All the vitamins are just under the skin, and they enjoyed them!!
Another playtime clip of our birthday pups when they were little
Some playtime with the big dogs! Poppy’s pup (I think it’s Ruby) from our birthday litter
Here’s Poppy, mother of our birthday pups, taken today. It’s been a lovely sunny, but cold February day here in Wales, and it was an enjoyable walk for us all.
So here I am peeling broccoli stalks and all four dogs are waiting for the trimmings. Who needs commercial dog treats? Not me, and probably not you! Mine love these 😊
Naomi set up her camera to film herself doing a new exercise to check that she’s doing it correctly, but Cyffun has other ideas, and plants himself in full view instead. No cocker spaniel should ever be ignored or left out!
Cyffun lives with his mistress Naomi and her mum Ann in Anglesey. He is Nutmegs pup from her final litter, and has grown into a big fine boy now, but he was actually quite a small pup in the first few weeks of his life. Naomi adores him, he was long awaited as a puppy, as she had been looking for an orange roan show type for a long time. He gets lots of exercise, they are fortunate to live in a very beautiful part of Wales and close to beaches.
A rare moment of utter relaxation for Barley whilst being brushed.
He is a sensitive soul and he can’t bare the pulling on knots when I groom him. His ears get really knotty, and well, everywhere else does too really, he is an active, fit dog.
Consequently I always have a pair of scissors close by, I don’t even attempt to brush through knots, I just surreptitiously snip them out whilst distracting with strokes on different parts of him so he isn’t focused on the scissors!
It’s not easy, I have to go with his mood and just do what I can, when I can. That’s why he is never looking quite so good as the others! I have found that he is more tolerant in the mornings, but I really have to do a bit little and often with Barley, and always make it as pleasurable as I possibly can.
All of my 4 dogs are different about being groomed according to their different characters. They all have their sensitive spots, usually ears, underarms or bottoms.
They all enjoy it as long as it’s comfortable, but one negative experience can change it, and it can take a while to build trust again. It’s definitely so much easier and more enjoyable if I really keep on top of it and do it every few days, but life isn’t like that, and I frequently find myself back at start line with a big job on my hands.
So little tips for getting your puppy happy to be brushed;
*. Develop the patience of a saint VERY QUICKLY!
*. Don’t let it become a game, keep it soothing and sensual
*. Don’t continue if your puppy has had enough, never make it a discipline issue , leave it and have another little go later if he’s not in the mood now.
*. Experiment with different brushes, personally I find very cheap £1.50 plastic hair brushes from some bargain shops the best, with flexible cushioned pins (after having spent vast sums of money on proper dog brushes)
*. Have a very sharp pair of scissors handy, with rounded tips . I actually now favour grooming scissors with a curved blade, I
Here’s a greetings card that I received from Craig and Isobel in Berkshire and it made me laugh so much. They have 2 siblings from our first ever litter (Nutmeg), brother and sister Milo and Josie.
So funny!
Stunning colours and sea clarity, Cyffun in Anglesey takes a dip.
With great enthusiasm and excitement they launched forth into a fresh snowy world... the return journey was a bit more laboured!
Barley was very, very hungry this morning !
The reason? Food left from our Christmas dinner was left out on the worktops all night and had been whetting his apetite unbearably, he just couldn’t quite reach it...
Cyffun on Christmas 🎄 morning with his 🎁 presents.
Mark’s home ! Blue trying to have his time with Mark, and Barley barges in
We took another trip to Poppit sands this afternoon, the dogs overjoyed as always to visit our old stomping ground. In this video a successful seeing off of a lovely little dog (I so wish they wouldn’t do this!), but he thankfully wasn’t traumatised by my lot behaving like hooligans.
I was looking through some of my thousands of photos and videos of our dogs and puppies this evening and found this one of Cariad from Poppy’s litter in spring, really sweet, I forget all the precious moments.
But thankfully I have all these photographic records, the problem is keeping them in some kind of accessible order, it’s all a bit pot luck when I am looking for something.
... And this one is of Cyffun this year. Sent by Naomi in Anglesey, Cyffun is Nutmegs pup from her litter last year, it’s all looking very christmassy 🎄
