Happy Birthday to the Mountain Thunder on the Plains Litter! Rainbow would say Happy Birthday but she is busy enjoying her ice cream.

Rainbow x Forest's puppies have moved on to their forever homes marking the closing of the beginning chapter of their lives.

As we spent the weekend breaking down and packing up the exercise pen, and washing the linens and bedding one last time, we realize we have so many people to thank for these beautiful puppies.

Thanks to MountainThunder Chinooks, for being great mentors. They were with us from planning through whelping. They came to Casper when Rainbow's labor started and stayed with us for a couple days afterwards to make sure everything was going smoothly. We sure appreciate that couple of nights of good sleep that tag teaming provided! Having them with us throughout the whelping was very reassuring. They graciously shared their whelping box and whelping kit which included a ton of linens, scale...... pretty much everything listed in Cheryl Brown's Litter Record, on the Chinook Breed Monitoring Facebook Group.

As a mentor, Karen drove home how key being prepared is for a successful whelping. She reached out to Karen Hinchy who let us borrow her doppler so we could listen to the puppy heart beats. Karen Schiller shared her Puppy Intensive Care book and I was glad we had a "Go Box" ready once we realized Rainbow's whelping had stalled.

Having Karen and Dave here during the whelping, and all four of us at the vet at 3am to help wake up the puppies after their delivery, was enormously helpful.

Our vet said most people wait too long to recognize distress and call for help. The Schiller's, with their wealth of experience, sensed there were difficulties almost immediately or this litter might have had a different ending.

The Chinook community is great. Thank you.

We had a little puppy party last weekend with our grown children and grandchildren. The puppies loved playing with the grandchildren as much as the grandchildren enjoyed playing with them. Here are some pictures our daughter took of the puppies. She captured their little expression well.

Here are the fourth week pictures of the Back Beat Litter. You can see how fast they have grown in a week. Ringo and Ginger are 5 pounds 13 ounces, and Charlie is 5 ponnds, 5 ounces. They had their first outdoor experience. We moved then from the whelping box to their "play pin" where there is more room to wrestle. Ginger was the first to breakout!

Here are the third week pictures of the Back Beat Litter. We are behind in posting weekly pictures. We have been so busy with these pups. They are so much fun, and to be honest a lot of work. From top to bottom, Charlie was 3 pounds 13 ozs, Ginger 3 pounds 15.5 oz, and Ringo was 4 pounds 4.5 oz. Look for the fourth week pics next. You can see how much they have grown in just a week.

The pups all have a favorite place to sleep. Ringo's favorite place is the cookie sheet next to their water.

This was a bitter sweet week. We said goodbye to sweet little Miss Moon. She will always have a special place in our hearts and our backyard.

There were a lot of firsts this week. The puppies are growing like weeds and are becoming little characters. They all opened their eyes this week and are beginning to explore their world with their mouths. They're kissing each other with the famous Chinook kiss. Steve scratched Charlie's tummy and found the magic "spot". Ginger scratched an itch like a big dog and Ringo practiced howling. He's a natural.

Little Miss Moon crossed the Rainbow Bridge early Monday morning, May 23, 2022. Moonie was born the morning May 12, 2022. She was one of the four members of WyoChinookWinds “Back Beat” Litter (Mountain Thunder Rainbow x Wildcat Valley Forest). Moon rapidly went from being little and feisty to being in serious trouble that we could not pull her out of despite a weekend emergency vet visit and lots of individual love and care.

We could tell almost immediately that Moonie was a very sweet little girl. She was the smallest of the litter, but she wasn’t afraid to fight for her place at Rainbow’s milk bar. She was also born with the Chinook gift of communication. Moon was very vocal from the beginning just like her Mom.

Moon was a very pretty little puppy. She had been blessed with beautiful markings. She shared the same “snow kiss” on her chin that Rainbow has. She also had a white star on her chest to compliment her “outfit”. She liked to cuddle with her brothers Ringo, Charlie and sister Ginger and it was adorable to see them all together.

Rainbow spent most of the last days and night with Moon, when she was not caring for the other puppies. She’s a great Mom and I’m sure she misses Moonie now.

Even though Moon was with us for a short time she quickly became a member of our family. Her crossing has broken our hearts and like her namesake, left this world much too soon.

Rainbow x Forest’s litter have arrived! They have two girls ( a buff and a tawny) and two boys (also a buff and a tawny). Sadly the fifth puppy, a girl, was stillborn. The puppies were delivered by c-section yesterday morning. Mom and all puppies are doing great. All but one puppy gained a half of an ounce since yesterday. Mr. Blue's weight stayed the same. Here are some pictures.

Rainbow had her xray yesterday. Can you guess how many puppies she has? The puppies are the end of next week 😊
