Ahead of the nutrition call I’m hosting for my families this evening, I thought I’d have some fun and put this together😄 So looking forward to talking all things dog food/ treats/ supplements later on with everyone!
Crate Training Update #2! So proud of these little ones🤩 Closed doors and nary a whimper nor a whine🥰
This doesn’t happen overnight, it has been a build up over time getting them used to and comfortable in and around the crates, and not pushing them too far too soon. Being able to settle and sleep will be so important when they go home to their new families (and ensure their humans stay somewhat sane!) and so being happy/ comfortable/ relaxed it’s something I really try and instil during our time together🫶🏻
Right now, my goal is two crate naps a day and also a short, positive awake time exposure. With the naps, sometimes these won’t last long at all (a puppy’s bladder is still really unpredictable at this point). They could only be 10 minutes in duration, or they could be 2 hours! Whatever the length of time, I’m happy😄 I’m wanting them to build positive associations, wanting them not to stress that they’ll be trapped in there longer than they want to be.
Big thank you to @maandpadoodles for her wonderful guide and fab content- it’s really helped streamline my processes and keep me entertained whilst caring for this crazy crew🤪
Sometimes puppies can really struggle with motion sickness in the car, making their first experiences poor ones for both you and them too! It’s really important to me that I’m always improving the puppies socialisation curriculum and looking for better ways to raise your pup so that you can get the most out of life with them!
⏩️ Cue the saucer swing! Something I’ve added for the Birds and the Bees, and I think has made a huge difference in our early car ride journeys.
✅ It’s so common for puppies to get sick in the car, and in order to work on fixing it you need to determine if it’s motion sickness or car sickness first.
❕Car sickness is where the dog has gotten sick in the car and associates the car with being sick. This could mean that if your puppy is unwell and you drive them to the vets, they could associate that sicky feeling with the car ride even though the drive had nothing to do with it!
❕Motion sickness is caused by the ears and eyes not synchronising the movement, making them nauseous.
🌟 I’m so happy with the results I’ve already had with the swing. Such a seemingly small change, but with big (positive!!) implications - I think this swing has already made a big difference😄
Noise habituation and Desensitisation✅
These puppies have a whole playlist dedicated to desensitising them to scary and shocking sounds they could experience in the world. By exposing them gently in a calm, controlled environment, these little ones are learning to just roll with it - or in this case, sleep right through! For them, it’s just background noise. Nothing to see here folks! And that’s just what we want, for the puppies to thinks “heh, whatever!”, when they leave us. Of course, we can’t expose them to every single sound they’ll ever hear prior to going home, but this is laying the foundation for a relaxed, balanced pup who’s likely going to be a whole lot more confident than those who’ve just heard the hoover a few times!
What sounds do you think your puppy would need to get used?
