As mention in previous post, this cutie got in her practice over Christmas and it was clearly evident when it came to our session today (your dogs will always tell me who did their homework 😉)
Here she is practicing her settles in a coffee shop, not only with another dog and a person (me) she new had tasty treats but also while her mum went to order, she remained in her settle tucked away (this particular dog, due to a previous trainer, did not like to feel closed in, so being tucked in this corner was a big thing for her too)

Please bear in mind, that we did not just 'shove her into a corner' and this was where I knew they had done their homework, as I set some tasks for them over the holidays to help this goldie over her fear or being in cramped space/environment. Echo, however, was totally just in it for the rewards 🤣

Been lovely seeing all the dogs again after Christmas and catching up with their adventures with owners while everyone had their Christmas break.

So let's get back to work, a lovely pic of Echo with another assistance dog, who's done some real practice over Christmas as I could see the improvement, so big well done to this clever goldie and her human, for getting some practice in during festivities.

Echos been waiting for her friend annie (collie) to be recovered enough to play properly together. They've met on lead walks, and been out on mats having a long lasting chews together, but this is what Echo been waiting for. As you can see we had 2 ball orientated dogs and 2 very much foodie.

So that's christmas 2024 over and done!

My 3 were truly spoilt once again this year. We do santanpaws gifts for the dogs but for mine, this just means that anyone who buys them a gift it goes into the "santa paws bag" and when they are allowed it, they all get tipped out and they can just let loose and unwrap them all.

They do this on the day we don't have family because my neice has got to the age she likes to open the presents she got for them, with them, and if they've not had any yet the excitement is there to see what she got them 🥰

How were all your pooches over the holidays?

Echos Gone and got herself a REPUTATION on our walks 😬😬😬

So it's not everyday you walk the dog and find out your dogs got her own reputation among other dog walkers.

So Echo always goes separately for a walk from other 2 cos she likes to play ball, and they have no interest. So minding our own business we went to field to play ball, always aware to give others space to enjoy their walks too. Well an old lady who's small dog was heading our way shouted is it OK if she comes to say hello? I said she can do but echo isn't really interested in anything but the ball. The lady came over to chat for abit and went on to say that the dog walkers she was walking with before was telling her how they call echo the tap tap dog because when she's excited for the ball she does like this happy feet dance, which they love, she said the ladies said that she was so lovely to watch because she is so well behaved and you can see that the ball means so much to her and she comes across as so happy, it's contagious to watch.
I explained she was a working dog and the ball has always been a huge reward for her, and said we call her "tap tap" happy feet because it reminds me of in the happy feet film when the penguin goes, I dance cos my feet are happy. 🥰

Not every day you find out your dog has a reputation, but if she is going to have one, I'm so proud it's because she spreads happiness to others because they can see just how much fun she has and how much it means to her 🥰

Definitely made me smile today ☺️

So this year I've obviously began to train echo on migraine alerts so I can get rescue meds in quick enough. However I dis not expect this.

So around 2 weeks ago Echo started to sit bolt upright and stare at me for hrs at a time when I settled for evening pawing at me every 30 secs. First couple days mum had made cakes and the next I cooked chicken for them so put it down to her asking for some. However 5 days later ot was still happening and pawing at me is her back up alert if I don't listen so I said to mum I wonder if she's alerting to me for something (last year when my kidneys were bad her behaviour changed and then when I came outa hosp she was back to normal) so I messaged my team amd explained I know this is going to sound strange but can we do bloods because she was right last year. Went and had bloods done last Friday, and Monday the nurse rang me back with such praise for Echo. Nurse went on to explain my liver levels have shot up and if Echo hadn't of alerted this could have been a very different result esp as my actual bloods weren't due til jan. So of course she got lots of praise and an extra chew that night.
Been advised to stop certain meds and repeat those bloods in couple weeks to see if they go back down. It's also prompted my other teams to help with other current issues.

Who knew when training Echo she was not only going to pick up migraines bit she was also going to alert when something isn't right, my little furry saviour obviously knew to her I smelt different and had to in some way get my attention. Once I was seen at hosp (as in pic) Echo relaxed again as if she knew a human had taken over.

Dogs are just so very clever 🥰

So what's everyone done with the pumpkins after Halloween?
These are my 2 homegrown pumpkins sat between the dogs.

Pumpkin is really good for dogs digestion as well as a good'binder' for them if they have an upset belly 💩 so I made puree from 1 pumpkin and froze into portions of 3 so 1 bag will do all 3 dogs. Then the second pumpkin we made a pumpkin pie and then feoze the rest into portions for the dogs, so they've got a good stash atm.

What did you guys do with your pumpkins? Did your dogs help you with eating the pumpkin too?

After a bit of a step back having to get sharkie used to dogs again (got pinned by 2 out of control dogs) with help from his handler today we got back on track and got back inside the shopping center for some public access work!

It's reasons like this as to why I'm so passionate your dog shud have a recall inc around Distractions! Because this set us back a good few months to reteach him that not all dogs are bad, just because of irresponsible owners.

Some practice of crowd control for isla here while her handler picks up some cakes.
I find this a useful stance for crowd control as their bum out back means people naturally have to give space to pass, but it also means should the handler need it they have the dogs head for sensory feedback if anxious or just out of their comfort zone. Plus a good position where they can remain in middle while shuffle forward in cue.

Working on heelwork but with a ball for his reward, and then working on his instant drop when asked.

Drop is a different cue to putting in my hand and would be used for things like if your dog got hold of a dead animal and you don't want to argue with them for it. It means just drop exactly where you are and I will reward you.

This video shows a combination of both heelwork reward with a toy and then getting his toy back by giving the drop cue, not bad for his first day introduction to drop.

A little something me and echo worked on over the last month. Thinking about how I could further proof my basic positions other than turning around with my back to her I thought where next can I take this....

Sooo I recorded on voice notes me saying, sit, down and stand and over the month proceeded to work with her. Initially she looked confused as to why she heard my voice but my mouth wasn't moving but with the help of hand signals as a prompt to start we did it. I did play the sounds to fast initially so she began to guess, but when I slowed it down and allowed her to think, here are my results....

Aren't dogs impressive creatures?

This lovely goldie came to.me from another trainer who said she had floor aversion and to just "flood" her with surfaces. Having been sent videos by the owner i could actually predict when she wud hit the floor, and it was everytime their was a surface change or something different on floor, such as a door frame or floor sticker. So initially we worked on this, then returned to shops where her body language wasn't fear now but more like she thought she was going to slip and was bracing herself (think when humans walk like penguins in ice) so lastly I showed her owners how to introduce some grippy socks/shoes to her and then next session we returned to shops and as you can see her demeanor is completely different, her body is upright and confident and she doesn't look like she's trying not to slip anymore.

Well done to these owners for not only seeking a 2nd opinion but for getting this lovely golden back on track to being a fab assistance dog in training.

NOTE:
I only got them to initially introduce to her front feet as ideally if back wasn't needed I didn't want to introduce so that she can still sweat through her back pads if needed. Luckily in this case it was all she needed.

Last lot of our funday photos!

These are just a few pics I took of the trick section of our sesson. Alot of dogs were starting to lag in the last 30 mins, so everyone was given a leaflet with the instructions on of how to continue with these tricks should they wish to at home.
The tricks included:
1. skateboarding
2. Hold
3. Tidy up
4. Strike a pose (on aerobics step)
5. Stacking cups or the hoops stack

A lovely video of isla having a go at a turn/curved corner in hoopers.

This was before I stepped in and got isla handler on the other side so she didn't have to run so far, I felt they were doing so well I didn't want to interrupt!

There was a method to my madness keeping everyone doing different tasks at the same time.

1, everybody could work at their own pace and no 1 would be waiting around for their turn

2, it helped the dogs understand that even though a dog was having fun doing something different, it was equally as fun to stay with their handler

3, it meant no1 would look round and compare themselves to another team. This is natural instinct for most humans, and despite me saying everyone was at a different place in their training, it so easy to compare, this way everyone focussed on their own task and wasn't even that aware of the other dogs.
