Now i dont often have to teach escalatora to assistance dpgs because theres usually nearly always anpther way round such as a lift or stairs HOWEVER if the handler works in london or travels there alot for any reason then i will teach the dog an escalator. Yes assistances dog can stand on an escalator and not be carried but it isnt something i would recommend ever just "trying it" without help from someone experienced because it isnt easy and theres a reason we only teach under certain circumstances.

Anyways this is this pairs first day on escalator training so we got to the point she didnt mind texture under her feet and the movement so here you see her owner simply treating while working on a stand stay for the dog.

Would love to extend a thank you to the manager at in stevenage for being so kind as to let us use their escalatora today for this. It makes such a difference to an assistance dogs training journey when stores help out like this.

A little update with winnie and her walking on a loose lead. This is her forst time with me trying various shops. Dont you think she aced it?

This is a lovely example here of begining to teach abit of heelwork to winnie here. Ive popped some tasty cheese/biscuit in the bowl and winnie has to work out that she only gets closer when walking nicely, if she gets to the end of the lead the owner gives a cute chirpy "nope" to allow the dog to know ok i did something wrong so lets try something else, you do actually see her on hearing the "nope" to correct herself and loosen the lead. Once close she is then given permission to get to the bowl and eat her reward.
Its just a really nice way of starting heelwork by teaching them a reward is waiting, sometimes at this age they dont understand the field is technically the reward so we break it down for them.

Me and Echo took up residence in a new office this week and went to do breakfast in costas while waiting to pick my dad up from an appt. We went to catch up and type up the notes from you lovely lot we had this week.
Echo obviously gets alot off aww vs shes not happy look at that tail (think greyhound whippy tail instead of labrador rudder essentially) however knowone ever looks at the rest of the body especially the fact her head and ears which are essentially going there best be my pupaccino on that tray and a bite of your bacon roll. She loves being out and about with me, just unfortunately she doesnt have that labrador tail, But she does have the best head tilt when listening for instructions or just listening in general which pulls my heart strings everytime and im sure she is fully aware of this 🥰🤣

🐕‍🦺 Echo would like you to know yes she did get her puppacino and a bit of the bacon (no roll) 🐕‍🦺

Big thanks to in 9 yards retail park stevenage who allowed us to go practice their disabled lift because its a more unusual one where the floor goes up by holding in a button and the walls 'move' . On entering the lift its very different to a normal lift where i usually say head for a corner esp while training, but with this style lift if your dogs tail sticks out you really dont want them tucked in a corner incase that tail gets stuck or hurt as the floor moves up and down. This is their second attempt after correct the dpgs want to get into the corner, instead for this style i treat it like a shelf in a store where i face the bottons and tuck the dog either infront of me or as this owner has chosen in between hwr legs. This dog has a habit of shuffling back so was important to make her feel safe so she disnt do this. You can also see as it hits the floor wanted theres a big bump which she handled brilliantly and still even managed to pick up and give mum her lead before leaving.
Its one of the style lifts that im coming across more and can freak some dogs out as its soo different to them. Really greatful to the staff who allowed us to use and go up and down in their lift. Well done emma at Harmony - Professional Dog Training for the hard work, such a fab duo who are going to make the best team.

Now this dog has a very decent stay, and you can see shes reset once and her bottom doesnt move but her nose is going 10 to the dozen still which is obviously not amazing but we have literally set her amongst the open and stinky pic and mix in the pet shop so its understandable at the same time and is something the oqner will continue to work on. Shes a stereo typical lab who loves hwr food so sometimes it can take just that little bit longer for them to ignore yummy smells completely. But ive absolutely no doubt in this pair and i no now pointed out, they will probably have it suseed very soon 🤣

So happy i was filming after i snuck out the scented article which has the smell on that rory alerts to. You can see she clearly isnt sniffing for food shes working out she noes the smell and for first time in a novel environment, gives a very confident boop onto the handler.

Picking up novel items which arent scented of her or owners to help with item retreival in shops. Note how she ignores the sock on chair as not been instructed to get. Instead she takes the fox to her dad as instructed.

Rory learning to do her wave cue away from handler.
This is a nice little trick i teach the dogs as a compromise for the person who has asked to say hi, and weve responded wirh sorry they are working HOWEVER "she will wave if you wave at her" this is enough to placate the child who wamted to say hi but also meant my dog wasnt distracted as just veiws this as another task. So far not to jinx but all teams have had 100% success using this (once dog has learnt it)

Wish tonextend our thanks to Andrew at and Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre who helped me organise a fantastic training opportunity for these dogs today, where we got free run of the theater, auditorium and backstage and then access and even help from the staff for some added training in the gym which we would also like to thank just for making the day even easier for us.

Oppurtunities and training days like this make all the difference to these guys and thsir future as assistance dogs , so it is very much appreciated.

Fantastic oppurtunity for some training for you and your assistance dog. Ive managed to arrange for a small group to go and not only practice within the theater auditorium while staff create noises ect for the dogs to work around, but also downstairs within the gym downstairs. The session will be planned by me and their will be tasks for everyone as well as some individual tasks so that the visit is worthwhile to everyone.

Theres only 2 spaces left and will be on a first come first served basis. If ive not seen your dog for a few months we will need a quick refresh so i can see that this is appropriate for your dog, which can easily be arranged.

Date: 30th august
Time: 10.30 til 13.30
Price: £75

If interested please pop me a message, you will get 48hrs to pay for your space until i offer to the next person waiting. This is going to be a fab opportinity if theater and watching shows is your thing or even if you need a gym buddy while you train, opening up a new experience for you both so if you ever did go the dog noes exactly what is expected of them and types of things happening in that environment.
