Running a rescue and intaking all of the dogs in care whole working full time limits how many dogs I can work with at once, and I prefer focusing on foster pups in care and working with foster homes! This is a fun little hobby I started for myself, but am happy to make other people's visions come true as well!

I'm other fun news, over the last 6 months I've gotten engaged, am now the owner of 4 chickens, and we're looking to move!

Over the past 6 months I've taken a break from training and looking for clients with COVID lockdowns and focusing on running the rescue.
I find working with foster homes and working with rescue dogs can be more fulfilling as foster homes are great at keeping the emotion out of training, and I get to see the amazing results from bringing these dogs up to the best they can be. Since January, I've had 25 dogs come through our home and either be adopted, or set up for success waiting for adoption!

Going forward, I'm going to pivot channeling my passion for dogs a wee bit... Stay tuned to see what exciting things are to come!!

Featuring my current foster pup Sierra!! Check out .foster.friends to see her progress in care!

Food Drive is essential when working on training and behavior modification with new dogs. If course it's not all about the food, it's body language, tone, timing, the environment, etc.. but food as a reward offers very clear communication when your pup had given the behavior that is asked. It's up to you to make that food meaningful and worth working for! .

Can You live with the power ?

โ€œIf youโ€™re prepared to own the power, you need to understand the power. You need to take the time to know your dog and understand their physical and emotional capabilities. You need to understand what is beneficial for that dog, because the reality is, power isnโ€™t made for dog parks and tea parties with the kids. Power is made for purpose. If youโ€™re not willing to fulfil that purpose do not be fooled into thinking it will just work itself out. The most important thing you can do is be willing to find out what is fulfilling for your dog.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅThe boys and I are having a nice cozy fire on this chilly autumn morning. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ
We've been fostering Tidal for 6 months- that's the average time it takes for a pup to settle into a new home! Tidal has certainly settled in well and is totally at home with our routines. It's nice having a foster pup I can confidently predict his actions in every situation.
We've been consistent- Tidal understands the rules of the house and is always calm indoors (& around fires) just like we want!

Challenge yourself! Set goals! Make a schedule!
There are always things to work on, or new commands to learn, set aside some time to schedule working with your pup every day-even if it's just 10 minutes! Mental exercise is incredibly fulfilling for your dog and builds your relationship with them.
My foster dog Tidal is pictured in the background, and I need to put in time daily working on handling his feet and building up his comfort to the nail trimmer. What does your pup need to work on?

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ LULU NEEDS OUR HELP ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ

Lululemon is a rescue dog with who is going into emergency surgery from ingesting a foreign body. We have partnered with Taffy's Legacy to offer 1-hour phone consultations for anyone donating over $100 to her care! Details below:

LULU NEEDS OUR HELP! Her vet bill is a MINIMUM $5000 and we currently only have $1000 fundraised to cover her care

Lulu was stabilized on arrival to the emergency clinic last night and had been waiting for an ultrasound and the expert board-certified surgeon to arrive and give us an update on her condition. Unfortunately her condition is worse than we had expected and we have to start surgery and aggressive treatment immediately.

Please consider donating to help Lulu! We are fighting to give this young girl the best chance she has to return to her healthy bouncy self! Thank you to everyone who has donated already, you'r donations have made it possible for us to get Lulu stabilized and ready for surgery!

We have set up a GoFundMe page if you are able to donate to Lulu's vet care (link below) -- we also accept etransfers at [email protected] with the password "TAFFYS20".

If you aren't in a position to donate right now, please help us out by sharing this post!

It's SPRING!! Take a deep breath, exhale out negative energy and focus on the positives! Make sure you check your own emotions and energy going into training, and if you're feeling frustrated, just pick another time to do it! .

21 Day Training Challenge!

Since many of us are on lockdown for the next few weeks, I thought we could do a daily training challenge at home! I'm going to post them on my Insta story and highlight under 21 Day Challenge. I'm going to focus on a new trick or fundamental exercise every day, working through steps to get there. I'm going to try to pick things my dogs don't already know, so it doesn't look easy, but depends on the day :)

Remember: Mental exercise is more tiring than physical exercise, and training is a great way to build your bond with your dog!

Trying to break the stigma! Although I highly recommend speaking with a trainer about proper use before just strapping it on your pup, but they do work wonders!

I typically use a slip leash in "transitional" around the nose for dogs that's pull on leash, however that can rub the fur off the nose on short haired breeds, or can be an escape risk for some dogs, which is when I recommend a prong collar. I also recommend it for dogs that lunge at things that come up fast (bikes, cars, etc) in cases where owners don't have the strength or timing to give a correction.

Let's Talk About... the Prong Collar. Facts, not emotions:

The prong, or pinch, collar was first patented by Herm Sprenger in the late 1800s, and the design has evolved over the decades with improved knowledge, experience, and materials. It should be noted that Herm Sprenger (*not* "Springer") are one of only a very small handful of prong collar manufacturers that reputable trainers recommend, and arguably the best.

The collar itself:

The individual prongs themselves are angled in and blunt at the ends, NEVER sharp. They are not designed to stab like a needle, or injure the dog. Due to the mechanical design, pressure is distributed evenly around the neck, and this pressure is felt far more readily than that of a choke/check chain, or flat collar. Ergo, less pressure is required to be used by the handler. This is particularly useful for handlers who have strength or mobility issues, or who have very large dogs. Also important to observe is that there is a martingale chain that connects each side of the collar, which prevents the collar from tightening excessively or dangerously, as can happen with a choke or check chain that is not used appropriately.

The mechanics of the collar, as explained by a mechanical engineer:

F = force applied by the handler.

FA, FB, FC etc = force applied on dog's neck. The tip exerts the force in opposite direction of pull. This is because of the lever effect created by the fulcrum (shown in the red circle).

Now the important part: anatomy, not physics.
A dogโ€™s neck is sensitive at the throat and strong at the side and back. FE is force applied at neck and FB & FC are force applied on side of neck.

Now FA = F cos (angle made by FA and F); similarly, FB, FC etc. If you look at a trigonometry book, the greater the angle between F and the direction of resultant force (FA, FB etc), the lesser is the force. So you can see the force on the neck/throat is almost zero. And the force on the side of neck is almost equal to what you apply.

Please do bear in mind that this post is about the science behind the prong collar - not your *feelings*. If you don't like this particular tool, it's pretty simple: don't use it. But also bear in mind that, if you haven't ever used it, then your opinion of it is based on nothing more than emotion and/or hearsay. If you are triggered by this post, ask yourself why - based on *fact* :-)

And finally, always please remember: TOOLS DON'T TRAIN DOGS; TRAINING TRAINS DOGS! If your trainer puts one of these on your dog to "teach it to walk nicely to Heel", I would suggest firing them and finding a trainer who understands how to teach Handler Awareness, the Step Sit, and actually train the dog. If your dog will only walk to Heel when it is wearing equipment (of any kind), it's not trained :-)

Teach your new dog how to be independent! When you bring home a new dog it's easy to spoil them with love and attention. All. The. Time.

But that can create a needy dog that becomes pushy for attention, or jealous of you giving attention to other people or pets. Set aside time for them to play solo and be calm in the house. Try to "ignore" them, but keep an eye out to make sure they aren't getting into mischief!
