So you just brought home a new puppy and potty training has been hard...
Here's some tips that may help!

1) Potty Pads: these can be great tools but only allow a temporary fix and ultimately cause more issues than they actually help. Potty Pads can teach the puppy that it's ok to potty in the house, when the goal is for the puppy to learn that outside it where he/she should use the bathroom. A good way is taking the potty pad outside for the puppy to learn the smells and become familiar with the outdoors and soon enough they will start incorporating outside smells and looks and going potty

2) Creating A Schedule & Diet: take them out every hour. Feed them? Take them out afterwards! Just gave them water? Take them out afterwards! Allow the puppy access to water every hour but don't allow them to drink a whole bowl. It's not withholding but helping with their water intake that way they can hold their bladders better.

3) ALWAYS praise your puppy for going "outside": give them a treat the minute they are done doing their business and give them all the love! You can even teach them a "go potty" command when they're out so they start to catch on

4) Potty Bells/buttons: these are bells that hang on your door or button that go on the ground that allows the dog to hit them anytime they need to go out which helps you realize when they need to go out as well (but this will come with more training)

Most importantly...Learn the body language of your puppy when they are about to go, such as, Sniffing, Walking in circles, Hunched back, Start to squat, Pickering butt (yes as funny as that sounds that may mean they are about to p**p)

5) Crate: when you can't supervise your puppy, crate them in an appropriate sized crate. Dogs are clean creatures, they don't like to potty where they would typically sleep or play so crate training and making them love their crate enough to keep it clean can help a lot! Of course don't leave them in their for long and when you do let them out of their crate then you should take them outside

6) NEVER scolded: yelling at your puppy will only make matters worse. It will just ruin your bond with them, scaring them and could, in the long run, make them hide and go potty somewhere else. If they have an accident clean it up and immediately take them out and allow them to sniff the picked up f***s so they associate the smell of that and the outdoor world (I know that sounds disgusting but it works on some puppies) but also make sure you clean the spot in your house very well to insure the puppy can't smell where they had the accident

That are all the tips! Let me know if you have any questions and I would be more than happy to help you out 🤗

It's Christmas time, which means a lot of puppies will be getting adopted for presents which is great but please do research before you bring a puppy home for your kid/family

Puppies turn into dogs that are 10+ years of commitment. They don't stay puppies for forever. Not always is it best to get a puppy as a gift to someone for Christmas

Keep in mind your time you will give, money for the needs of the puppy (such as, vet bills/vaccines, toys, kennel, training, food, bowls, collars, leashes, harnesses, etc.) These aren't easy animals

Picking the right breed is also important, picking a breed/mixed breed that will fit your lifestyle is EXTREMELY important. Keep in mind the genetics the dog could/will carry and there personality/temperament

The space and time you can give to your puppies is something to also take note of. Do you live in the city or country? Do you have a big yard, small yard or no yard? Do you live in a apartment? These are things to note when picking the right breed and size of the dog. And time. How long will the dog be alone at home while you're gone? Etc.

Training. Training is how your dog learns to behave. Do you know the knowledge to train your puppy? How much will it cost you to train your puppy if you need a trainer? Especially puppies and potty training them!

So much thought is put into bringing a puppy/dog into your home, if you have kids, other pets or whatever the case might be, ALWAYS research before getting a puppy!

Merry Christmas, the Lonestar Mutt team hopes you have a wonderful Christmas 🎄
