While dogs love chewing on bones, cooked ones become too hard for them to digest. Unlike raw bones, cooked bones can't be broken down by a dog's stomach acid. This can cause serious health problems like blockages or tears in their digestive tract.

Always be careful about what you feed your furry friends. Stick to safe, raw bones or chew toys to keep them happy and healthy.

Brachycephalic dog breeds, like French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzu are more likely to develop heatstroke.

These breeds have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature, making them more susceptible to heatstroke. If you notice any signs of heatstroke in your brachycephalic companion, such as collapse, increased breathing rate, or neurological abnormalities, act swiftly and seek veterinary assistance. Remember, early recognition and prompt intervention can make all the difference in saving their lives.

Take extra precautions to keep them cool and provide plenty of water during hot weather to ensure their well-being.

DID YOU KNOW? Cats of all kinds love soaking up the sun. But why do they bask in the sunshine?

• Sunbathing helps cats save energy by using the sun's heat instead of their own metabolic heat.
• While cats can't produce vitamin D through sunlight like humans, sunbathing increases sebum production, which contains provitamins. When cats groom, they ingest this, gaining vitamin D.
• Sun exposure is linked to higher melatonin levels in cats, helping them achieve restful sleep.
• Sunbathing increases serotonin and dopamine levels, enhancing mood and appetite.
• Sunlight boosts immune system function and skin health and can even ease arthritis pain in older cats.

However, too much heat exposure can be harmful to cats. Overexposure carries significant risks such as dehydration, heatstroke, and sunburn. To make sure your cat enjoys the sunshine safely, follow these precautions:

• Set up shaded areas outdoors for a safe relaxation spot.
• Limit sunbathing to cooler times of the day, avoiding 10 AM to 4 PM.
• Keep indoor and outdoor environments well-ventilated.
• Make water easily accessible to encourage hydration.
• Avoid shaving your cat's fur because it serves as a natural barrier against the sun.

🚫 Lastly, I would like to warn everyone not to use sunscreen products on cats! Most sunscreens for humans contain octanol, zinc oxide, and other chemicals as sunscreen agents. If you apply them to cats, they may become poisoned if they lick and consume them! Just allow the cat to enjoy its sunbath in a healthy and joyful way. :)

During the hot summer months, our dogs experience the heat just like us and are even more susceptible to heat stroke. To help your pets cool down, here are a few easy-to-make homemade treats that will keep them cool and happy:

🍉Watermelon Pupsicles

Blend or mash watermelon until smooth and pour it into popsicle molds or ice cube trays. To add creaminess, mix in a little plain yogurt. Make sure all seeds are removed to prevent the risk of intestinal blockage, which is especially dangerous for smaller dogs.

🍌🫐Frozen Yogurt

Mix plain yogurt with mashed banana or blueberries, then freeze. Avoid adding grapes or raisins because they contain substances toxic to dogs, which can lead to acute kidney failure.

🧊Bone Broth Ice Cubes

To make a dog-safe bone broth, make sure it does not contain onions or garlic, as these are toxic to dogs. Pour the prepared broth into ice cube trays and freeze.

🥜Banana and Peanut Butter Bites

Mash banana and mix with peanut butter. Make sure the peanut butter given to your dogs is xylitol-free because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, even in small amounts.

Hey fur parents! We're going to dive a little deeper into the world of veterinary medicine and discuss some important aspects of your pet's health. This might get a bit technical, but we believe it's important to keep you informed.

When we examine your furry friends, we listen closely to their breathing. Certain sounds can help us diagnose potential health issues:

🫁 If we hear crackling sounds, it might mean your pet is dealing with pulmonary edema, pneumonia, bronchial collapse, or even pulmonary fibrosis.

🫁 Wheezing often points towards chronic bronchitis, while dull respiratory sounds could indicate problems with the pleura or within the pleural space (like pleural effusion, pneumothorax, intrathoracic masses, or diaphragmatic hernias).

🫁 Increased effort during inspiration (breathing in) suggests an issue with the extrathoracic airway, whereas increased effort during expiration (breathing out) could mean an intrathoracic airway disease.

We also pay attention to the type of cough your pet has:

🚨 A productive cough, which is typically moist and low-pitched, may suggest fluid accumulation in the airways due to conditions like pneumonia or edema.

🚨 Non-productive coughs are dry, harsh, high-pitched, or honking, and could be an indication of airway collapse or chronic bronchitis.

🚨 It's worth noting that while mucus from the trachea is usually coughed up with productive coughs, animals often swallow this, so it might not be obvious to you.

🚨 If you notice or hear about blood in your pet's cough (hemoptysis), it's essential to get them checked out as it could be due to coagulopathy, neoplasia, severe heartworm, or pneumonia.

Remember, pets that have been vomiting, undergone anesthesia, have been recumbent for a long time, have megaesophagus, immune compromise, and/or airway susceptibility should be monitored closely for signs of pneumonia.

Avocado is a favorite treat for many of us, but did you know it can be harmful to our pets? The fruit, leaves, stems, and seeds contain a toxin called persin, which can cause serious health issues in animals, including dogs, cats, birds, and even livestock like horses and cattle.

Symptoms of avocado poisoning can range from gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea, to more severe conditions such as respiratory distress, fluid accumulation around the heart, and in some cases, even death. Birds and livestock seem particularly susceptible, with high doses causing acute respiratory syndrome and mastitis.

So, while we enjoy this delicious superfood, let's remember to keep it away from our pets to ensure their safety. A balanced, species-appropriate diet is always the best choice for our four-legged family members! 🐾💕

Attention to all pet owners!

As the new year approaches, many of us are looking forward to celebrating with fireworks and sparklers. However, these festive items can pose a serious threat to our furry friends, especially if they accidentally lick or ingest the firecracker powder on the floor. Firecracker powder is very toxic to pets, and can cause severe health problems, such as burns, vomiting, seizures, kidney failure, and even death.

To keep your pets safe and comfortable this new year, please follow these tips:

• Keep your pets indoors and away from loud noises, such as fireworks, poppers, and noisemakers. Provide them with a quiet and cozy place to hide, such as a crate or a room with blankets and toys.

• If you are having guests over or going out, make sure your pets are comfortable and secure. Inform your guests about your pets and their needs and ask them to be respectful and careful. If you are leaving your pets alone, make sure they have enough food, water, and toys, and that all exits are locked.

Trichodectes canis is a type of bug that only lives on dogs and can be found all over the world. It doesn't affect humans or cats. It can serve as an intermediate host for the zoonotic tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. Infested dogs must be treated, as heavy infestations can cause hair loss and other symptoms. Diagnosis involves finding life-cycle stages on the dog's body or nits attached to fur.

If you think your dog has this bug, take them to the vet right away.

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that can affect both humans and animals. It can cause fever, kidney failure, liver damage, and even death. One of the ways you can get leptospirosis is by coming into contact with the urine of an infected animal, such as your pet. That's why it's important to protect your furry friends from this disease by getting them vaccinated regularly. Vaccination can prevent your pet from getting sick and spreading the infection to you or other animals.

Don't take any chances with leptospirosis. Talk to your veterinarian today and get your pet vaccinated. It's the best way to show them you care.

BARBED P***S OF MALE CATS 🐱

The pe**le anatomy of male cats is markedly distinct from that of other mammals. Specifically, their p***s is adorned with backward-facing keratinized papillae, or small spines, which are composed of the same material as human nails and located on the surface of the organ. This peculiar feature is believed to have evolved as a reproductive adaptation, increasing the likelihood of successful fertilization during mating.

During copulation, the male cat's pe**le barbs stimulate the female cat's reproductive tract, inducing ovulation in preparation for fertilization. Despite their advantageous role in reproduction, these spiny structures can also result in pain for the female during mating. Additionally, male cats may experience difficulties in retracting their p***s post-coitus, which may cause injury or infection. The barbed p***s of male cats, therefore, represents an intriguing adaptation with both benefits and drawbacks.

Finally met the Dogs of Alona during my recent beach getaway in Panglao, Bohol! These pups, known as the Dogs of Alona, are the stars of BARK (Bohol Animal Rescue and Kindness).

These furry friends are fed daily, treated for any medical problems, registered, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered. Some of them have local owners, while others consider tourists and beach workers as their family. The Dogs of Alona are pawsitively awesome ambassadors of responsible animal stewardship.

The Philippines is home to one of the world's smallest primates - the tarsier. As small primates, tarsiers rely on the dense vegetation provided by trees for their survival. These elusive creatures are nocturnal, and they spend most of their lives perched on branches and leaping from tree to tree in search of food.

Unfortunately, deforestation and habitat loss have taken a toll on tarsier populations in many parts of the world. With their homes being destroyed, tarsiers are forced to seek refuge in fragmented habitats, which can make it difficult for them to find enough food or mates.

As we celebrate the importance of trees, let's also remember the impact that deforestation can have on the lives of animals like the tarsier.
