Here’s an update! Naomi is doing well overall, except for her eyes. Dr. Schunk removed it and noticed a small bump near her eye. She made a small incision and discovered a relatively large abscess behind the eye (about the size of a bit smaller than her eye). Dr. Schunk removed the abscess, and Naomi already seems MUCH better!! Dr. Schunk explained that the shed had likely been pushed back far enough that it wasn’t noticeable until the previous shed removal allowed it to shift forward. Naomi will be on two weeks of oral antibiotics, but Dr. Schunk isn’t concerned about her overall health, just the eyes, which should feel much better now! Yay Naomi!!!

Sepsis is a serious condition where an infection spreads through the body, and aquatic turtles are at risk—especially in dirty water or after injuries.
What Causes Sepsis?
Turtles living in water that isn’t perfectly clean can easily pick up harmful bacteria. Sepsis can develop from:
- Injuries: Cuts, shell cracks, or fights.
- Bacterial infections: Common offenders include Aeromonas and Pseudomonas.
- Poor water quality: Dirty water is a breeding ground for bacteria.
- Weak immune systems: Stress or bad diets can make turtles more vulnerable.
Watch for these warning signs:
- Lethargy: Your turtle’s not moving much or swimming like usual.
- Loss of appetite: Refusing food is often a red flag.
- Swelling or redness: Infected areas might swell up or turn red.
- Pus or discharge: Any gooey stuff coming from wounds is a bad sign.
- Breathing problems: Sepsis can affect the turtle’s lungs.
- Shell issues: Discoloration or soft spots on the shell can signal infection.
How to Treat and Prevent Sepsis
If you think your turtle has sepsis, a vet visit is a must! Treatment usually includes:
- Antibiotics to fight the infection.
- Fluid therapy to help with hydration.
- Wound care to clean and protect injuries.
To prevent sepsis:
- Keep the water clean with regular changes.
- Check for injuries and treat them promptly.
- Feed your turtle a balanced diet to keep their immune system strong.
Sepsis is serious, but with the right care, your turtle can recover and stay healthy! Keep an eye out for the signs, and don’t hesitate to get help from a vet if needed.

Did you know that turtles can suffer from sepsis, just like other animals? Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to infection. In turtles, it often results from bacterial infections, injuries, or compromised immune systems.
Common signs of sepsis in turtles include:
- Lethargy or decreased activity
- Swelling or redness in the skin
- Pink, puffy skin
- Pink plastron (the bottom shell)
- Abnormal swimming or buoyancy issues
- Loss of appetite
- Discharge from the eyes or mouth
