Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) in turtles is a condition caused by an imbalance in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D3, often due to improper diet, lack of UVB light, or insufficient calcium intake(genetic/renal). It leads to weakened bones, deformities, and other health issues.
To prevent MBD, ensure turtles have access to UVB light for 10-12 hours a day, as it helps with calcium absorption. Provide a balanced diet with calcium-rich foods like dark leafy greens and offer a calcium supplement. Avoid over-relying on phosphorus-rich foods like meat and ensure the proper calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Regular veterinary check-ups are also important to catch any early signs.

Who truly rescued who? Caribou, I love you so much. I’m writing this as your body is next to me. We spent all night together, waiting for it to be time for you to earn your dragon wings. I thought that rescue would make me tough— that I would just be numb. However, I’m a disaster knowing you aren’t here anymore. I’m so sad that my best friend wont be there in the morning when I take my own meloxicam.
Caribou, I believe the universe sent me you to help me heal with my own health challenges. You know that we struggled with Arthritis together. I have Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome and I’d always joke with you that I can make my back look like yours too. Caribou, loving you was the biggest blessing I ever had. I’m so thankful that our paths crossed and that you let me love you.
Learning to rescue again, without you, is going to be rough. I didn’t ever think your wings would take you across rainbow bridge so soon. I love you with all my heart, Caribou. Caribou’s body will be going to UCONN for an in depth necropsy report. His paw prints and ashes will be sent to me afterwards.

Caribou has been causing me a lot of concern lately. Since December 26th, I’ve noticed signs that he’s not doing well. He’s been more lethargic, showing black bearding, and reacting with hissing when picked up — behavior that’s completely out of character for him. Thankfully, Kensington Bird and Animal Hospital was able to fit us in!
We’re currently trying different medications that won’t affect his kidneys, in order to keep his uric acid levels stable.
If the swelling in his leg doesn’t improve, Caribou may need an amputation. If that happens, the amputated limb will be sent for further analysis to help us understand if there’s an underlying illness that other tests might have missed.
For now, Caribou will be on a series of medications, and I’m hoping that with love and treatment, he’ll pull through. Please send him your positive thoughts!

Just like in humans, chronic illness can be debilitating for reptiles. Caribou has many challenges that make him much different than a healthy bearded dragon, but those challenges don’t make us love him less.
Caribou has an increase in pinworm count, so he will be on meds to help. He keeps showing signs of new inflammation starting on his joints, so we added two new medications to see if we can combat his pain.
Caribou is already on a special diet due to his uric acid levels being high when we first had him in our care. Since then, his kidney disease has not progressed (Yay!). However, Caribou remains an enigma due to all of his countless inconclusive joint taps, bloodwork, and scans. In order to get a better idea of his illness, we need to think about amputation.
Caribou is going through a lot, but we are so determined to help him feel better 🥹💚

Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) is an umbrella term for skeletal disorders caused by calcium, phosphorus, or vitamin D3 imbalances in bearded dragons. It can also result from renal (kidney) issues, which affect calcium regulation.
Causes:
- Poor Nutrition: A diet lacking calcium or vitamin D3, or one with too much phosphorus, is a leading cause of MBD. Proper supplementation and a balanced diet are key.
- Renal Issues: Kidney disease can impair calcium processing, leading to bone weakness.
Symptoms:
- Physical deformities (e.g., soft jaw, bowed legs)
- Lethargy and muscle weakness
- Difficulty moving or climbing
Prevention and Treatment:
- Ensure a balanced diet with calcium, vitamin D3, and proper UVB exposure.
- Veterinary care is vital for treatment, which may include supplements and UVB therapy. Kidney issues require medical intervention.
MBD can be preventable with the right care and diet, so regular veterinary checkups and proper nutrition are crucial for a healthy bearded dragon.

Skinny Mini is our newest medical case! SM was not well taken care of by his first owner, and then a wonderful woman stepped in and took his best care of him as she could. When skinny Minnie became more stable, this wonderful woman reached out to us to extend the care of that skinny Minnie would need. If it wasn’t for this wonderful woman, skinny Minnie wouldn’t have gotten the care or attention that he deserved sooner.
skinny Minnie will be seeing our vet on January 7 and is showing signs of metabolic bone disease, an upper respiratory infection, and vitamin A challenges. We will not know a final diagnosis until our vet visit on the seventh.
