Foraging Made Easy: Prepare homemade foraging toys in advance. Dedicate a small amount of time once per week to make toys out of saved boxes and safe items that you have saved throughout the week. This can be done while watching a TV show or relaxing with some music! By preparing items in advance, your bird will have fun new foraging opportunities available all week long.

Lorikeets spend up to 70% of their time foraging for food in the wild. In order to provide nutritional enrichment and foraging opportunities in captivity, offer your lorikeets fresh flowering browse (such as eucalyptus species) and watch them harvest pollen and nectar from the flowers. Lorikeets also enjoy stripping the leaves and chewing on the bark of safe browse items. Whole pieces of fruit can be hidden around the enclosure. These items take longer to eat than chopped fruit offered in the food bowl.

"This is a good example of the importance of following veterinary advice and scientific evidence around feed, additives and good animal care as something as simple as overzealous use of spices can lead to serious conditions. Make sure and give your animal feeds and supplements SOURCED FROM RELIABLE PROVIDERS such as VET PRACTICES or HIGH QUALITY FEED producers and avoid UNREGULATED PRODUCTS or HOME REMEDIES that may cause your beloved pet harm."

Summer Fun for Ducks: Small pieces of lettuce and herbs are a great treat for ducks. Avoid feeding high carbohydrate foods like bread to wild and captive ducks. These foods are not a natural part of a duck’s diet and can lead to a variety of health issues including obesity, joint disease, and angular limb deformities (eg: Angel wing).

Which of these items is safe to have around birds?
Answer: Jalapeños are safe to give to birds. However, avocados are toxic and should never be fed. Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne toxins due to their unique respiratory systems. Burning wax scented candles or overheating teflon non-stick surfaces can produce airborne toxins that are lethal to birds.

What is an appropriate diet for this bird?
Answer: It depends! Factors like species, lifestyle, reproductive activity, and health status should always be considered. Despite these factors, a balanced diet should generally have a combination of formulated pellets, veggies, fruits, and possibly a low volume of seeds and nuts! Diets comprised only of seeds and nuts are high in calories and nutritionally deficient. Offering this small amount of seeds or nuts as rewards in foraging opportunities is a great way to bring enrichment to your birds diet!
