Another saved dog! This little girl (Anya) was a foster. She was new to the family and unfamiliar with her surroundings. She was running scared near Buffalo Rd in Negaunee. BTH was contacted to help. After assessing the location and environment where Anya was running BTH felt it was a safe area to set a live trap. Within 30 minutes Luna entered the trap. Her foster family was so happy to have her back!

Bring Them Home and Michigamme Lost Pet Help would like to thank everyone who came to the How You Can Help a Lost Dog presentation yesterday. We apologize for the technical difficulties and thank you for your patience with that.

Here are the videos we wanted to show you during the presentation.

The first demonstrates survival mode in dogs. Reba had been missing for 3 days when her human mom spotted her as they were going to set a trap nearby. It took 20 minutes of her mom sitting on the ground luring her for Reba to finally recognize her mom. The video shows only the last 4 minutes of it.

The next video shows you some ways to use calming signals to help lure a dog to you when it's safe to do so.

When BTH was contacted about this sweet girl she had already been running for what was reported several days. On the day BTH was contacted she was crossing 581 at two different locations both of which were sharp corners in the road. When BTH arrived on the scene the sheriff's deputy was present. It didn't take long to know this dog wasn't going to come to anyone even if they had a freshly cooked steak. She was in 100% survival mode! Because she was near a busy road it was vital that a plan be put in place asap. However, before a plan can be put in place the situation has to be assessed. There are many steps that need to be taken before a trap is set. It's based on many different factors and each situation is different just as each dog's behaviors are different. The first step is to always clear the area of people. People remaining in or coming to the area would have only caused her to leave the area. The second step is to get the dog situated in one area. There was one yard of which this girl was entering. The house was located directly off 581 and directly in front of a sharp blinding corner. With other steps put in place BTH then reached out to the homeowners of the said property. The goal was to keep the dog on their side of the road. Not only to prevent her from being hit, but also so a trap could be set where she was last seen. She was hanging out behind the house. The homeowner stayed in his front yard walking back and forth to keep this girl stationed in his backyard. He did not call for her or move towards his backyard. He simply made his presence know by walking back and forth. BTH set up a feeding station with just a small amount of food. For the most part a dog that is not hungry will not enter a trap. BTH then set a trap to the side of the house far enough from the road that the traffic would not scare her off. Within 20 minutes she was in the trap. She was hungry and dehydrated. She did have some minor injuries, but nothing serious. Her body language was that of a dog that knew she'd been saved. This rescue was possible by the people who posted sightings, the people that BTH, the homeowners of the yard she was trapped in, the neighbors that lived on a side road nearby who heated up some fresh spaghetti to put in the trap and the many people that slowed down when they saw her crossing the road. As always it takes a community and the proper steps to bring a lost dog to safety. REMEMBER NEVER CHASE A LOST/SCARED DOG. If able snap a picture, post the location, dog's behaviors and direction dog was moving. Those steps will start the process.

Bring Them Home has received training from https://azhartt.org/ We have years of experience in the field and want to share that experience with you. It's our mission to help families bring their beloved dog home. And to educate the community on things they can do to help. While people mean well, it's not as simple as jumping in your vehicle and going to the location where a sighting was reported. Infact this behavior puts the dog's life at risk. Once a dog has hit survival mode and isn't coming to its people a trap can be set. Trapping a lost dog or stray dog is by no means as easy as trapping a lost or stray cat. The two situations can't be compared. There are several, specific steps that need to be taken for lost dogs in flight mode.

HARTT, Inc. (Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team) is a volunteer-based Arizona nonprofit organization that humanely captures lost family pets, homeless dogs, and homeless cats who are severely injured. Typically, these animals cannot easily be leashed, picked up or captured through ordinary means...

DO NOT OFFER A REWARD
When you dog goes missing, we do not recommend offering a reward. It encourages people to chase your dog in order to get the reward. There have been many eyewitness accounts of people chasing a lost dog because they wanted the reward money. It could and has had tragic consequences by chasing the dog towards a road or other dangerous areas.

Your strategy with a lost dog should be to encourage the dog to “settle” into an area and relax. Regular meals at a feeding station will allow the dog to return to a more domesticated state of mind and will give you the best opportunity to capture him.

It's not just shy, scared dogs that go missing and go into survival/flight mode. Even a well socialized dog may instinctively go into “survival mode” after finding themselves separated from their family for a period of time. While in this state of mind, dogs perceive all humans as threats. It’s not uncommon for a dog to flee even from his own family. When this happens it's time to put a plan in place which may include using a live trap. There are several steps that need to take place before a trap is set. BTH can assist and guide you in this process.

Our hearts are so full! In the ten days since the Bring Them Home traps were delivered, not one, but TWO dogs have been caught using our traps. We know this is just the beginning and are so grateful to the generosity of our sponsors and to all those who attended our event. We reached our goal of raising enough money to purchase 3 traps and thanks to a generous donation from Judi and Fred Mouser, we were able to exceed our goal and purchase a 4th trap. The traps have been tagged and delivered to Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter, Delta Animal Shelter and Searching for Stella. Traps are also available from Lost and Found Paws of the UP.

This all came about when two strangers (Tammy Wills and Beth) reached out to each other on FB after seeing several posts from people with lost dogs who were desperate to find access to a live trap. Together, they decided to do something about it! Thanks to the generosity of our communities, we now have 4 traps available in our surrounding counties and two grateful families who will be snuggling their precious fur babies tonight.

Special thanks go out to Leslie Larson Hurst for helping with our event and to Beth. whose trap know-how, tenacity to haul traps out into the woods, and coordination efforts involving dog guardians, property owners and the shelters helped to bring both Anya and Link home!

Thanks everyone who came to our Bucket Raffle fundraiser, to all of the shelters and to our wonderful sponsors: The Up North Lodge, Honor Credit Union - Gwinn branch, The Wallens, Globe Printing, Herbal Oasis Bodycare, Foxy Flowers, Superior Reloading, Country Village Ace Hardware, Pizza Hut, Bartanen's Auto Body, Da Yoopers Tourist Trap, Mares Z Doats, Stampede Sport N Feed, The Art of Massage, Super One Foods in Negaunee, Iron Bay Restaurant & Drinkery, Casa Calabria, Togo's - Marquette's Original Submarine Sandwich Shop, Sol Azteca, Elizabeth's Chop House, Jasper Ridge Brewery & Restaurant, Vango's Pizza & Cocktail Lounge, China King and Native Sister Soap.

"Bring Them Home - A Large Animal Live Trap Fundraiser" will raise money to buy quality live traps designed for medium to x-large breed dogs. Many dogs who run away are extremely skittish and a large trap may by the only means to "Bring Them Home".
In recent months with the escape and successful captures of dogs like Coco in Ishpeming and Otis on 480, it became readily apparent that the U.P. is seriously lacking accessibility to large animal live traps, with most counties having none at all, while on the other hand small live traps seem to be readily available.
We are partnering with the Alger County Animal Shelter, the Delta Animal Shelter and UPAWS for this event with the goal of raising enough money to purchase a live traps for each shelter. Any additional money will be used to expand into other counties in the U.P. with the hopes that one day each animal shelter here in the U.P. will have access to these traps. As animal owners we know that they rarely go sick or missing on a 9-5 schedule, with shelters having even more limited hours.
Please join us for an afternoon of music with The Wallens (whose dog Charlie is a pound pup) at The Up North Lodge. We'll have Bucket Raffles for you to peruse while you listen. If you are unable to attend, you may make a Donation at any Honor Credit Union branch - just ask for the Bring Them Home account #166930. If you'd like to donate a raffle item, please message us here or call Tammy at 906-361-4843 or Beth at 906-204-9179.
Thank You So Much! Now let's help - "BRING THEM HOME"!
