Team Tilly Canine Coaching Hi, I'm a level 4 Behaviour Practitioner (BCCSDip.AdvCanBhv) In 2020 I successfully passed the ThinkDOG certificate course.

Are you having a slow down Sunday?

We are all enjoying a Sunday afternoon rest. Caleb hasn’t been doing so well, checked over by the vet yesterday and trialling an additional pain relief 🥺 Vet review due at the end of the week.

We have to remember at times like this we all get a little stressed. Tilly had to stay home alone, Caleb had the vets. The humans are very worried 😟

This afternoon we are just resting. Both dogs had a little chew to help decompress and now settled 💤

Tilly loves scent games. We had a play with coin indication, Tilly wouldn’t eat or inhale the coin so although I’m careful I don’t worry too much. A larger item such as a coaster could be used. Tilly had fun 🤩

Tilly has been a bit down this week. We won’t share our crazy dancing 🫣 However, we left the music on and got out a nice trick Tilly knows. This takes a bit of coordination and really helps her confidence. She gets to unroll a blanket, she walks on the different surface, pushes it with her nose to find those hidden treats and these days I’m sure she rolls it back to try and magic up some more treats 🤩

Tilly has never liked the heat but over the last week she has started tucking herself away near the radiator 🐾 Tilly has also preferred to stay indoors and not go out too much. As this is a change it will be something we discuss with the vet in her next appointment as we know she has some recurring joint issues 🐕

Caleb has been struggling to settle lately. There are a number of reasons. One being his safe spaces are more difficult for his failing mobility and he on occasion gets stuck 🥺

So, how do we meet his needs in that he can freely access a safe space that is manageable for him? We have decided to trial a soft crate, popped in one of the beds to make it familiar scent wise and cosy 🐕

We have left it open for him to explore without pressure. No pressure Surprisingly he has chosen to take a nap in their already 💤

Tilly is snoring and Caleb is dreaming 💤

This is how they roll when I’m on the phone, writing up a plan or studying 📚

This didn’t just happen this grew from gentle coaching and training games 🐾

This is them feeling safe in a world that they found to be unsafe at some point in their previous life 🥺

They never stop teaching me, even when the lessons are harder 💕

Tilly got a new puzzle for Christmas. Now you may think this a bit easy for a dog who likes to use her nose and brain. However, she is still wary of touching and being touched by new things. This puzzle is also quite loud and she has to use her nose as her paws are too big. Watch how she goes for the easy bit first then settles into it. As a now senior dog it’s important that she gets to exercise her mind as well, she needs to exercise that brain as much as her body. Remember our senior dogs still need to play but perhaps in a more managed way than their younger days.

Walks with our golden oldies and younger dogs who need to take it easier.

With 80% of dogs over 8 years old and 35% of dogs over 1 year old affected by arthritis we need to consider their wellbeing on walks. Arthritis can also be a follow on from an injury, joint abnormality or conditions such as hip/elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, cruciate tears. Arthritis is progressive and affects not just the body but also the mind of the dog as they make physical changes in the way they move, carry their weight to offload those painful areas but also behaviour may change in that perhaps you note they are less social, more defensive around high energy players, possibly reactive to dogs running up to them, they may avoid their harness or just simply not enjoy being out anymore. They may just stop on walks, refuse to jump in the car before or at the end of a walk. Settling after a walk may take them a while as they struggle to get comfortable, you may notice they are stiffer after rest. If you spot any of these things happening, please keep a diary, pictures and video to take with you to your vet to get checked out.

Dogs are very stoic and as we know adrenalin is a fantastic pain killer so our dogs may still get excited for walks, want to race around and chase things. So, how do we make changes? We can ensure we walk our dogs on surfaces where they are less likely to slip, trip or fall. Be mindful of how far we are walking, a 15-20 minute active scent work session can be equivalent to a 1 hour walk, perhaps a slow sniffy walk may cover less ground but be physically and mentally beneficial for our dog. Instead of throwing a toy to be chased, we could hide it in some longer grass or somewhere safe and let our dogs search it out. If your dog loved agility, perhaps consider downgrading to a low impact activity such as hoopers. Be mindful of who your dog plays with, advocating for a calmer, gentler playmate. Consider the use of steps and ramps getting in and out of cars.

What if our dogs need more support on walk, well, our walks may look a lot different, and we need to consider their wellbeing. There are dog prams and buggies available so our dogs can still go out even if they are not able to walk. There are harnesses with handles on the back that can be used help balance or support our dogs to help them out, there are other harnesses such as the Help-em-up harness with handles at the hip and shoulder plus various straps available to lift our dogs and offer support. We should also be mindful of how the weather affects the dog, perhaps they now need a coat to keep their aching joints warm, or they are not as active as they were once.

If your dog is affected by arthritis, do check with your vet and/or physiotherapist what activities are suitable for your dog and what support they would benefit from. Gentle walks are great for both the dog and care givers wellbeing. Even just taking a picnic and hiring a safe enclosed field can allow some time out with out worry or doing a backpack walk, incorporating breaks in the walk to enjoy an activity such a chew, sniff spot or just sitting watching the world go by.

Whether our dog is older or young, there are things that we can all enjoy doing safely and mindfully.

How are you all doing after Christmas?🐕

Are you ready for New Year? 🤩

We hope you are all making the most of a quiet day 🐾

We may have all felt the pressure of Christmas and Boxing Day, New Year will be here in no time 🕰️

Let’s make the most of taking off the pressure and resetting over the next few days if you can. Perhaps you have noticed your dog being slightly out of sorts, now is a good time to take a break and let them have a bit of decompression time (we probably need it as well!). 🫣

Have a check of my previous December Days posts if you are looking for inspiration 🤩 Or drop me a message if you need any support with your dog 🐕
