5 shows in 5 weeks with a ankle that is blown to bits 🥴 it had been my biggest challenge yet! I have done just about everything you could possibly do to an ankle without dislocating it 🤦🏼‍♀️

I would not have been able to get through the last three months of orders, sales, shows, growing my business and getting down the road without the village of people around me! 🥰

Things have slowed down a lot for me, turnaround times have increased and it has taken me longer than usual to do everything because I simply cannot do it all myself at the moment. In fact I can’t even walk let alone do all the things. 🩼

BUT there has been a huge positive…in a lesson for me to slow down and learn to ask for help, there have been the most incredible and supportive people shining through to help me get it all done. To my partner and his family, my family, my friends, other stall holders, event organisers and complete strangers, I would have not been able to do it all without your generosity and support! 🫶🏻

Thank you to everyone for your understanding and patience while I try to get as much done as I can, while making sure I heal up from this injury and don’t cause myself too many problems down the road! 🤞🏻

The blue hat that Nicky has been hunting for,
for years 🩵

Sparkles ✨horses 🐴 and flowers 🌸 are three things very close to Nicky’s heart and she wanted to convey tham all through her hat that she plans on wearing as an everyday hat to make memories in and last her a lifetime. It needs to tell her story in style!

Nicky came out to my house for a custom hat appointment and we took the time to make her dream hat come true together! The blue hat spoke to her heart straight away, however the brim was a little big for her liking. We cut it down by half an inch right around, and it produced exactly what she was looking for. 🫶🏻

I shaped the hat to fit her head perfectly - stretched it in places and shrunk it in others to fit like a glove. Nicky said ‘it doesn’t even feel like it’s there ~ it’s just so comfortable’.

Next was the process of choosing the trim for the hat. The golden and turquoise floral fabric I had jumped out at her. She knew she wanted a braided leather lace to represent her days as a show groom plaiting horses manes and tails. We incorporated blue, chocolate and ash leather lace for contrast and to include her favourite colour ~ turquoise 🧵

Next up was the touch of sparkle! Nicky opted for the black suede band with little round diamantes on it to really frame the fabric and make it pop. ✨

Finally was a beautiful turquoise concho on the side which matched the floral fabric perfectly and really pulled the turquoise from the braided lace too.

I really enjoyed spending the time with Nicky to create her hat and the smile on her face and the way the colours really brought out her eyes was gorgeous! 🥰

I am so proud to have another client blown away with their custom hat and having enjoyed the experience as much as I do!

This hat was a special one for me 🫶🏻 a gorgeous lady came to me yesterday with the brief “I don’t do girly things but I’m getting married and want a hat to wear to my wedding.” 💖

We went through the process of choosing the colour hat that she felt most comfortable in and suited her skin tone and eyes best. We then made sure the hat fit her head perfectly - stretched it out in places and tilted the front down for a real rural gal style.

Next we started laying all sorts of pieces of fabrics, laces, ribbons and colours on top of the hat to see what was vibing with her.

The conversation went along the lines of “I really like this lace because it will match my dress” and then she spotted a blue paisley fabric that jumped out from underneath the pile. “What would it look like if we put that paisley underneath the lace?” 💍

This was the ticket! ✨ not only did it nail the ‘something blue’ for her special day, but it also contrasted with the brown and complimented the lace really nicely!

When it needed a touch of something else. I had a hand-braided leather lace I had just made up and she spotted that thinking it would fit perfectly. 🌵

We discussed tieing/joining each piece at the side or the back, and she opted for the back with little tails to fly in the wind. We added the finishing touch of a little rose which matched the Rose of Yorkshire tattoo she had for her dad. 🌺

We discussed how it is a bit of a process doing all the customising and she commented on how this was becoming a very special hat creating it together and that she would remember the process for ever! 🫶🏻

I really enjoyed working with this gorgeous lady to create a hat together that she didn’t even dream would be possible! This is why I do it 🩵 for special moments and interactions like these. You should have seen the smile on her face, it was just stunning 🥰

about business 🌵✨

I have ummmmmd and arrrrd about sharing this but I think it is a great reminder about one of the challenges of a creative business and hopefully a reminder to those people in business about how important authenticity is.

At Bar M, I pride myself in having built an authentic brand. A brand based on my story. Based on my values and morals. With my creative flair. A brand that speaks Millie - its in the name - Bar M, M for Millie. I have built a business with original ideas, an original brand, original colours and words and names. A tone of voice within my business that is unique to me. A way of story telling that sounds how I speak in a conversation. Not a single ‘copy’.

One of the most frustrating things for me is when people copy things that are unique to Bar M. Things I have designed or created myself. I always try to take it as a compliment that people think Bar M is cool enough to copy but it gets old quick.

From stealing my brand and logo that I own rights and trademark to,
to my one liners - built on grit and grace + look good | feel good | ride good,
to people and businesses in the same industry and crowd in the same island of the country using my exact brand colours on specific products that have been original designs at Bar M for years,
to almost replicating my marketing and social media content and posts.

BE ORIGINAL PEOPLE. Please. From the bottom of my heart. What makes businesses popular and successful is when they are unique. And if we can all be unique, we can all be successful. There is room for all of us here ~ lets build each other up rather than stealing and kicking brands aside.
