Meet Butterball, the 8.35kg male domestic shorthair patient who just had his dental cleaning today! 🦷

Back in February this year, I crossed paths with this charming boy who had been chronically suffering from wounds due to excessive scratching and licking. After a thorough diagnosis, it was revealed that he was dealing with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) or behavioral issues.

Through diligent care and a treatment plan involving a combination of cyclosporin, gabapentin, and other supplements, we managed to restore his once-irritated skin to a healthy and shiny state.

Our next mission? A healthier diet, because this boy is a bit on the thick side and already dealing with obesity! 🍽️

HAPPY WORLD VETERINARY DAY!

World Veterinary Day is a special day marked on the last Saturday of April, which is April 29 this year. It is a day to celebrate the noble profession of veterinarians and recognize their dedication to helping animals.

This profession plays a crucial role in the health and well-being of animals, people, and communities around the globe.

Veterinarians are some of the most caring and selfless people in the world, who have the difficult task of taking care of and helping animals recover from injury and illness.

Today, we also remember all animals, whether pets, food sources, wild or domestic, as companion animals or livestock. It is heartwarming to see such appreciation for the veterinary profession and the role it plays in our society.

INGUINAL CRYPTORCHIDISM IN CATS

Cryptorchidism refers to the failure of one or both testicles (te**es) to descend into the sc***um.

Cryptorchidism is much less common in cats than in dogs. The te**es develop near the kidneys within the abdomen and normally descend into the sc***um by two months of age.

PYOMETRA-SPAY SURGERY IN A FEMALE DSH CAT.‼️

Pyometra is a secondary infection that occurs because of hormonal changes in the female's reproductive tract.

If the cervix is open or relaxed, bacteria that are normally found in the va**na can enter the uterus easily.

Pyometra usually occurs two to eight weeks after the last estrus or the heat cycle.

Two types of pyometra:

1.) OPEN TYPE- pus will drain from the uterus through the va**na to the outside. This discharge may be observed on the skin or hair under the tail, or on bedding and furniture where the cat has recently laid.

2.) CLOSED TYPE- cervix is closed, the pus that forms is unable to drain to the outside. It collects in the uterus causing distention of the abdomen. The bacteria release toxins that are absorbed into the circulation. Cats with closed pyometra become severely ill very rapidly.

The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries.

WONDER WHAT CRYSTALS OR SEDIMENTS LOOKS LIKE IN YOUR CATS URINE?

Patient had difficulty in urinating for more than a weeks and look what we've found!

Crystalluria refers to the presence of crystals in the urine. These crystals are made up of minerals and other substances that would normally be dissolved in the urine; crystals form when these substances do not remain dissolved in the urine and instead coalesce (join together) into crystals.
There are a variety of different types of urinary crystals that may be seen in cat urine, although the most common forms are calcium oxalate crystals and magnesium ammonium phosphate (struvite).

Crystalluria may be associated with a problem that makes your cat more likely to develop urinary stones. In these cats, the presence of crystals may indicate a high concentration of crystal-forming substances within the urine, abnormally concentrated urine, an unusually high or low urine pH, a diet that is high in certain substances, or the ingestion of certain toxins.

ALWAYS INVEST IN YOUR PETS DIET.

Didi got discharged today for his fungal infection treatment! Look at that! 🫶🏻✨🥰

Treatment includes scheduled medicated bath, topical and oral antifungals, supportive medicines to boost immune system and promote good skin regeneration and healing. ✨

GENERALIZED FUNGAL INFECTION IN CATS

Ringworm or dermatophytosis is an infection caused by a particular type of fungus that has the ability to grow on the skin and use the superficial layers of the skin, hair or nails as a source of nutrition

Dermatophytosis is contagious infection. Infected hairs and spores are shed into the cat’s environment so other cats may become infected by direct contact. Spores in the environment can remain infectious for up to two years and are difficult to kill.

Treatment is always advised because although most cases eventually resolve, infected cats are a risk to other cats and also to humans – M canis is an important zoonotic disease as it can be quite easily spread from cats to humans.

SURGERY TIME!

CYSTOTOMY SURGERY (REMOVAL OF STONES FROM THE URINARY BLADDER)

Bladder stones (also called uroliths or cystic calculi) are rock-like formations of minerals that develop in the urinary bladder. There may be a large, single stone, or a collection of stones that range in size from sand-like grains to gravel.

The most common signs of bladder stones in the cat are blood in the urine (called hematuria), and straining to urinate (called dysuria) Bleeding happens because the stones rub against the bladder wall, irritating and damaging the tissues. Straining happens due to inflammation and swelling of the bladder walls or the urethra (the tube that connects the bladder to outside the body). Straining may also be caused by muscle spasms.

Most bladder stones are visible on radiographs (X-rays), or by an ultrasound exam of the bladder. These diagnostic imaging techniques should be performed on cats that show signs of abdominal pain or have repeated bouts of blood in the urine or straining.

There are two options for treatment. The fastest solution is to perform a cystotomy (surgery to open the bladder and remove the stones)

My patient for today presented with drooling, inappetence and lethargy. Upon checking her mouth I've seen multiple ulcers around the gums and tongue. This patient underwent viral screening and tested + for FCV.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly contagious virus that is one of the major causes of upper respiratory infections (URIs) or cat flu in cats.

The virus is readily transmitted between cats through:
* Direct contact – through contact with saliva, ocular or nasal secretions
* Inhalation of sneeze droplets
* Sharing or food bowls and litter trays
* A contaminated environment (including bedding and grooming aids) – FCV can potentially survive up to a month in the environment, although probably often does not survive more than 7-14 days

FCV infections are frequently complicated by secondary bacterial infections, so supportive treatment with antibiotics is usually required. Good nursing care is critical and cats may need to be hospitalised for intravenous fluid therapy and nutritional support in severe cases.

Vaccination for FCV is important for all cats. Two or three injections are recommended in kittens, starting at around 8 weeks of age. Cats should receive a booster at a year of age, and after that should receive further booster vaccines every 1-3 years.
Vaccination does not necessarily prevent infection with FCV but will greatly reduce the severity of clinical disease.

From an early stage, transient lameness has also been observed as a clinical feature in some cats infected with FCV and it now seems clear that this is, in fact, a relatively common clinical manifestation of FCV infection.

Here are some of my patients with FCGS.
FELINE CHRONIC GINGIVOSTOMATITIS.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gingiva, also known as the gum tissues, that surround the teeth. Stomatitis is also inflammation, but is inflammation affecting the other soft tissues in the mouth. This can include the insides of the lips, the back of the mouth, under the tongue, and the tongue itself. When the two terms are combined, gingivostomatitis , this refers to a unique syndrome in cats that results in severe inflammation that surrounds the teeth and the tissues in the back of the mouth and around the tongue. In these cats the oral soft tissues can appear ulcerated (weeping), bloody, swollen and infected. This severely painful condition can result in signs of oral pain such as pawing at the mouth, acting head- shy, gagging when scratched under the chin, excessive drooling, decreased appetite and decreased grooming. This can be severely debilitating for your pet.
Cats with feline chronic gingivostomatitis often develop severe periodontal disease, as the inflammation around their teeth spreads into the underlying bone, damaging structures supporting the teeth and leading to bone loss. The inflammation can be so severe that teeth may fall out, your cat may stop eating, and aggressive therapy is often needed to stop the inflammation.

MEGACOLON‼️

Megacolon is a chronic condition that occurs most often in cats and is basically a mega-sized, stretched-out, weakened colon.

Megacolon in cats can cause devastating health consequences as the colon fills with old, hardened f***s, and the colon is not strong enough to pass the “cemented stool.”

The most common clinical signs of megacolon in cats include:

Severe, painful constipation

Fewer bowel movements

Unusually hard f***s

The most common cause of feline megacolon is unrelieved or recurrent constipation.

Treatment of megacolon in cats depends upon the cause and severity. A medical approach is usually tried first, but surgery may be necessary for severe or chronic cases.

A medical approach involves the use of laxatives, colon-wall stimulants, enemas, and high-fiber diets or low-residue diets. While these don’t correct the underlying cause, they will hopefully allow f***l material to pass so the cat does not become further constipated. If megacolon is caught early, this may be enough to return the cat to normalcy, but there’s a high chance of recurrence.

Our patient "Oreo" done with his dental prophylaxis procedure! 🐱look at those clean teeth! ✨

A dental cleaning, also sometimes called a dental “prophy” or prophylaxis, is a cleaning and polishing of a cat’s teeth.

A dental cleaning should be performed on your cat when gingivitis (red area along the gum lines) is seen or bleeding during brushing is noted. Many cats get their teeth cleaned once a year.

A proper dental procedure for your pet requires him to be placed under general anesthesia. Prior to such a procedure, your veterinarian should perform a complete physical examination. Some basic blood tests, including evaluation of liver and kidney function and red and white blood cell counts, may also be done before an anesthetic procedure.

Care for your pet after a dental procedure depends on the extensiveness of the procedure. Special care is usually not required after a simple cleaning. If tooth extractions or advanced periodontal treatment was performed, feeding softer food, administering antibiotics and using an oral rinse may be recommended while healing occurs.
