I loved them, too. Although they aren't mine, I fall for them and love the way they wait for me at the door. The soft mews and barks while I prepare their meals, the affectionate head bumps and tail wags. The gentle way they look at me when I assure them no harm will come to them, that I will keep them safe while they await the return of their families. When they die, I mourn. I grieve. Because I loved them, too.
