The heron often hunts near the shore or wanders in shallow water, where the water at its deepest point barely reaches its belly. It patiently waits for some careless animal to appear, then it rapidly stretches its neck and grabs its prey with a strong, long and sharp beak, from which the prey cannot escape. Along with fish, the gray heron also catches other small animals: insects, small mammals and birds, frogs, snakes, and even crayfish.
