Weekend reading from Pedagogy of the Oppressed
"In order for the struggle [of fully humanizing ourselves and others] to have meaning, the oppressed must not, in seeking to regain their humanity, become in turn oppressors of the oppressors, but rather restorers of the humanity of both."
"But almost always, during the initial stage of the struggle, the oppressed, instead of striving for liberation, tend themselves to become oppressors, or "sub-oppressors."
So many thoughts about the dog training industry, as many of dog trainers view themselves as social justice/liberatory agents for dogs and other people, to liberate them from the use of punishment in teaching and the belief punishment is necessary to learn and teach. How if we view the people who believe in the necessity of violence to teach as both part of the oppressors and the oppressed, then people who have the resources to fully practice radical compassion and kindness (the oppressed who have become liberated) must work diligently not to become oppressors of these people in the name of the goal of liberation, and to recognize and work against the systems perpetuating these beliefs instead of focusing on villainizing individuals.
What do you do to be mindful of and work against the tendency to perpetuate systems of oppression in your work, for both dogs and people?
I'm in the learning stage 🤓
